I've just sold my skyline and looking at either a s15 or FD rx7. I love the agressive look of the rx7 but i've been told they are thirsty as and the engine is unreliable but have no experience with them myself. I like the look of s15 and parts for the sr20 are availiable in bulk. Like some feedback especially from anyone that has an rx7, I know I'm probably better off posting on aus rotar or something like that but of course they will say the rotar is the best

Cheers

RX7 twin turbo's need rebuilds at least every 100,000km I heard, so they can be very expensive car to run. But they also look INSANELY hot! And are much rarer. For a mint RX7 though you would be looking at a lot more than a nice s15.

S15's make good power pretty easily, can look really nice and are very reliable if looked after!

So depends on your budget, and what you want the car for.

my mate had a rx7 and because he loved the look of them so much he ended up doing a engine conversion just because he was sick of fixing the engine that was in it. Rare to get them thou as most can only be imported and used on tracks...thats what i heard at least

I currently own an FD RX7 after having owned only nissan's for past 9 years (s13,s15,gtst& gtr's).

my answer is it depends on what you want it for.... IMO you can use the rx-7 as a daily if your not driving very long dist & if your not over 6''1-6''2 (without having seat rails modified).

they are better on petrol than a GTR if you drive both cars easily although not as good as the s15..... performance between an s15 & rx7 is worlds apart...rx7 is better in everyway possible...rx7 is more comparable to a gtr.

I use my car 2-3 times a week & have a shitbox for the other days...I could use the rx7 everyday although like a gtr it feels wasted plonking around in traffic.... thus far I have had no issues with reliability.

the main catch is that a good rx7 (00-02) rs model will set you back a good 30g or so...s15 prob closer to 20g.

send me a pm if you have any other questions

I have been looking at importing my own rx7 and found a couple I am keen on. My budget would be around 30K just buying the car. I have seen good low km s15's for around the 20-22k mark where as the rx7 I have my eye on would be much closer to the 30k. I currently have a company car so whatever I get it wouldn't be driven that much at the moement anyway. But I won't work at my current job forever. Very tough decision but to me the rx7 is just a mean car even in a reletively standard form. To be honest I have never taken either car for a test drive so i will definately have to do that before I make any sort of decision. All the info and or opinions are much appreciated

rx7's are not as rare as you think. Series 6,7 were sold here in australia and cost a fair bit compared to imported serie 8 rx7's. There are heaps of them in the country now and can easily be imported if you cant find what you want here in australia. The ones you would be mainly thinking of are the series 6,7 that can only be imported for track cars as they were sold here by mazda.

I would say get the rx7. You wil have a lot more fun in a rx7 than a s15. They are reliable when looked after and maintained properly ie warmed up and cooled down properly. They are awesome cars to drive and modify and can make big horse power for small engines. And since you wont be using it as a daily driver you wont have to worry so much about fuel.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
