Hi All,

I am a non-skyline owning new member doing some research on skylines for my company, and thought what better way to research this than getting the information from the enthusiasts themselves- you guys!

I am trying to list all the different types of skylines, from 1989 to 2002 (r32-r34 series), and what i am finding it difficult to understand is how the naming conventions of BNR34, BCNR33, HR33 etc... are all assigned to a particular model.

So far, a friend of mine have come up with the below, but am not 100% sure.

So i am looking to you guys and gals for assistance. Are any of you able to provide more info on this?

R32 Skyline - 1989 to 1994

BNR34 = GT-R NISMO R-tune 2.6 L RB26DETT twin-turbo I6, 332 PS (244 kW, 392 N m)

BNR34 = GT-R NISMO Z-tune 2.8 L (bored and stroked) RB26DETT Z2 twin-turbo I6, 500 PS (368 kW, 540 N m) Z1 and Z2 (Only 20 made)

Looking at the above, we have come to the assumption that the skyline naming conventions follows a pattern,

Example:

GTS = HR<series>

GTS25 = ER<series>

GTS-4 = ENR<series>

GTR = BNR<series>

GTS-T = ECR<series>

Is anyone able to please assist or point me in the right direction to get this info?!?

Thanks in advance,

Jed (aka ganaZ~)

I just read through that list and now have a headache. Where did you get that list from? Half of that is wrong.

I can't be bothered going through and re writing the list but here's a couple that are wrong:

R32

No such thing as a Type-X 1.8 L CA18i from the nissan factory in a R32.

No such thing as a GTE Type-X or GTS Type X with a RB25DE from the nissan factory in a R32, let alone a 208kw non turbo RB25.

R33

No such thing as a SOHC RB20 in a R33, earlier models in the R33 could get purchased with a RB20 but they are DOHC.

R34

No such thing as a Rb20 neo R34.

No such thing as a GTX or a GTV

No such thing as a GT4 AWD non turbo R34.

R34 neos aren't rated at 206kw.

All GTR's are rated at 206kw because this was the Japanese agreement at the time even though they made more than this, so technically not 244kw.

So yeah, no idea where you got those from....

Thanks bud- thats why i jumped on here to see if i can get the correct info.

Any ideas with how the HR, ER, BNR, BCNR etc are all assigned to a particular model (example below)?

GTS = HR<series>

GTS25 = ER<series>

GTS-4 = ENR<series>

GTR = BNR<series>

GTS-T = ECR<series>

R34s did come out with an RB20 Neo..its the most fuel efficient rb engine

Also there are such things as R34 GTX and GTV

dunno what the difference is with the GTX but the GTV is basicall a GTT with a non turbo engine

So wouldnt that be a R34 GT.....

You got a link to a RB20 Neo?

- Neo RB20s are in the R34 workshop manual, both the rb26 and neo rb25 are 206kw

- R34 GTVs have the big brakes and all options that the Gt-t has except they have an rb25de

- There are 4wd r34s, theyre just harder to find

- Sohc rb20 r33s are out there aswell, a rarity as no one wants them and they aren't imported much.

Same goes for the r31 and r32's, the carby ca18 models rarely get imported.

Ok just checked the R34 manual and your right, it does say a RB20, has any one ever seen one or got more info on this? Never seen a RB20 in a R34 from factory.

The rest i've never seen in Aus (sohc RB20 or carby CA18 in a R32 or AWD R34 GT4), but there ya go, i stand corrected :P

man they are just about all wrong, all standard GTR's had 206kw not 186kw or 244kw .

I suggest you stop getting info from your friend. :/

I think 186kw is at all 4 wheels and 244kw is at the flywheel.

On the RB20 note, R32, 33 and 34s did come out with 2lt inline 6.

A member just resently made a thread about his R34 coming with a 2 lt engine.

You gotta admit though, 99% of people wouldn't know that a RB20 came out in a R34, that you can get a carby CA18 in a R32 and a SOHC RB20 in a R33. I told a couple of mates about it tonight and they didn't believe it until we did some searching on google.

Good thread though, learn something new every day :/

On another note, god u'd be pissed if you bought a R34 without checking under the bonnet and found a RB20 lol. Surely the rb20 wouldn't have much power down low to move a fairly heavy R34 (compared to a R32) that well.

I just bought a rb20 R34 haha, about 4 days ago.

And i had no clue they existed either untill after i bought it and noticed the engine number started with rb20.

And yes PM-R33, i was pretty pissed after buying it then noticing it was a rb20...pretty stupid mistake.

And yes i was the person who posted the topic about the 2L rb20 r34.

If it wasnt for the engine no. on his old rego i never would of found out.

I guess thats what you get for a $13500 r34. (still worth it though)

As for the power...just feels like any other inline 6, nothing really fancy, deffently doesnt feel heavy or slow.

hmm my R32 GTS-4 is listed as a HNR32 on the blue build plate, taking a stab at the probably obvious here, I assume that the prefix has something to do with engine type and rwd/4wd, also the JDM R31s were HR31, as well as the R32 GTST being HR32, so probably not based on year.

But also lookin for a bit info (dont ask much do i?) on how the HR, BNCR, ER names are linked to the different models/series? any clues?

Try This Link for an answer.

Was passd on to me by another member here not long back, sorry cant remember who it was though or in which thread.

ahh the non existant gte r32.... lol http://autospeed.com/cms/A_2278/article.html

also mentions the non existant non turbo rb25de r32, while they aren't called type x, they do exist.

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
