R32 Gtr What To Look For When Buying?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm looking at buying an R32 GTR, the problem is i dont know what i should be looking for or checking for a decent GTR nowadays as i dont have that much knowledge on them. If anyone with knowledge on them could tell me a few things on what i should be be aware of before buying one or any info possible to assist me lol.

Thanks

Bez

Specific to GTRs:

- Engine compression and leak down test.

- Look for rust, particularly under the body.

- Check all suspension components for wear and tear.

- Make sure gearbox isn't noisy, make sure 4th gear is easily selectable.

- If you buy a cheapish GTR, budget for a rebuild.

Also don't forget, other than the cost of the GTR, they are expensive to run, insure and maintain! So it would suit a buyer with spare cash for plenty of maintenance and for when things go wrong. Lucky for you it is a buyers market now and I have seen some fine examples, with rebuilt engines and decent mods going for around the 20k mark.

Have fun and good luck!

all good stuff above, look for all the normal stuff as if buying an ordinary set of wheels: then [seeing as you are new to the GTR wonders]have a recognised GTR, literate workshop give the car a full electronic diagnostic. plenty of hidden costs here.

good luck!!.

this is a good start http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/bu...e-f-t35129.html

make sure the attessa system works too, and if the 4wd light is on, check the attessa ecu for errors.

Thats true I brought my GTR not knowing the 4wd didnt work. Now trying to fix it.

thanks alot for the info guys. and thanks for the link aswell. i read through it all so i am a bit more aware of some things i should check. i will keep looking into more GTR's for sale. There is a little bit of a range i see some selling dirt cheap around 10-11k mark but they look like theyve been to hell and back lol.

Finaly moving up hey b3za... LOL!

Come to the Burger cruise and we show you afew GTRs there and tell you what to look out for, cool!

agreed - this is the best way to get a feel on what to look for and check

get a few of them side by side and its easy to work out whats wrong

then you cna use this info to find bugs in the new possible car

one piece of advice i must give. DONT say to your self ohhh i can fix this and i can fix that buy a car from someone older who really appreciated the car and looked after it inside and out .

I was looking for mine i had no idea about SAU 3 years ago so i had no help no older cousins with skylines nothing it was hard for me, but i saw one loved it and said ah don't worry about the rim scrape ill get new rims ah don't worry about the paint ill re spray it later on anyway 3 years later a respray ... so just take your time dont rush it man and good luck hope you find one thats mint ps: dont get black i wash it 2 times a day lol

I think you should look for one sold by this "GTAAAH" guy man, heard it just had a $10k rebuild he couldnt afford done 2000km's ago, is mechanically great, has no rust and a few minor scratches on the front bar and back bar.. also heard the guy was selling it for 21k ono, just what i heard.. :P

lmao. hahah yeah i will be coming to the burger cruise for sure! i will have my beloved 34 back aswell with a brand new exotic look =)

that would be great if few people showed me there GTR's id like to learn alot! guess i will see you guys then!

I'm still browsing and yes i learnt NOT to get black.. my 34 is black and yes its a pain in the ass hahaha.. spesh when you garage it everynight and theres shit loads of dust on it the next morning!!!

PM Nismo32R, he is selling his. tuned by Racepace and a few mods

Hope this is helpful

Good luck

Thanks. Yeah i already have seen his car on carsales thought it was from SAU.

Check the chassis rails underneath - I've seen heaps that are crushed.. probably from being forklifted in japan. They rust out, plus not good for rigidity / chassis flex.

No blue smoke.

Check for fuel leaking from the body of the injectors - sometimes only starts after a while running / getting hot.

Check all panel seams - e.g. open the boot lid and check along the jamb, you will be able to tell if it had been in an accident. Also pull the rubber U lining strip off the door frame and check the spot welds under there - if its uneven or buckled at all its been in an accident.

Such damn good cars though, i've only had really superficial problems in my 4-5 odd years from a 19 year old car cranking out a fair bit of power. Unbelievable.

I had a look through the GSM Performance website at reclining seats and booked an appointment to visit their show room. I got the Recaro Sportster CS for the R34 from here, was very happy with the service received so of course a re-visit was in order. Unfortunately the two Corbeau seats I had chosen aren't on display but they had 4 other options available. Two seats dug into my back, one dug into my legs and the other was perfect. I also found out that Recaro seats use a larger bolt pattern so some adaption was required. Luckily GSM offer some universal adaptors that should solve this problem. I searched the interwebs for price comparisons and Corbeau themselves were the cheapest at £300 cheaper (for the pair). I asked GSM if they could price match, unfortunately they couldn't. I later received an email saying Corbeau would honour them the same discount, but the purchase was already made. I did however order the brackets from GSM, both arrived on the same day. I started with the passenger side seat, knowing this was going to be a little trial and error. There are 3 mounting holes at the front and 2 at the rear on these JURAN Racing seat rails.  With the adaptor brackets mounted, the allen cap bolts started to push into the seat, NOT GOOD!  The rear mounting holes lined up but there were issues at the front. The holes were 1/2 hole out, so the brackets got a tickle with the drill to modify the holes. The supplied bolts weren't going to be long enough and a spacer was needed to stop the adaptor bars from bending. A local fasteners company supplied be with some nylon spacers and longer bolts (M8x30, although these will be replaced with 35mm long shortly) A before and after I pre-drilled the front bracket before making a start on the driver's seat to save some time. And in no time at all that was in the car too. The all black seats have transformed the interior and these are MUCH more comfortable. The only downside with the new Corbeau seats is I sit a little higher, but I'll happily accept that over discomfort. The Youtube video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPyttKPktXA
    • All 3 I guess. The car came with the JASI Aero 4 door Type R Full Kit unpainted so this was one thing at the top of my list to complete then I noticed there were body panels parts for this kit so i picked them up along with some black mesh to fill in the front bumper and front side air vents. car is at a paint and body shop atm completing this work. Next I will be addressing the internal bells and whistles, great summer project I can do with the kids.  full interior removal - ,boys car sound deadening - pads and spray ,boys stereo, sound, lighting - Big 3, GTT or bigger alternator ,kids head lining - dye black add star lighting mod ,daughter. That's it for the next 5-6 months. I have some motor maintenance  work i have to plan out. oil filter relocation, gaskets, mounts. beyond that, mind is starting to turn over if i can use a DET intake plenum, block off turbo ports & pipe in a air intake.
    • roller coaster of a ride. Alarm system was removed & main harness was repaired where possible. still no fix just random successful starts. moved on to the replacing the ignition switch and relay. well all this troubleshooting & repair has been going on, the car is at a paint and body shop being pushed around. Ive been going down there on odd days after work to get it sorted.
