I keep seeing $150k referenced in various threads when cost is discussed, which is book price.

The on-road cost consideration is more $170k+ for Premium spec once Gov taxes and dealer charges are included, then any options you pick, then insurance on top .....and that was a month ago when Aussie dollar high. Ouch !!!!

Cant do much about Kev's taxes so "enquired" what customer return and benefit I was getting for what I considered high dealer charges. I was advised they were making "significant" investment in new car lifts (to cater for low nose high) as well as "a special" purpose built service area (aka: a new coffee machine perhaps for the service tech ?) ... do ya think customers may just be paying for some of that in the dealer charges ... :D

Interested in others experience on dealer charges, stories that were told, and whether their hands were on, or under the desk, when explaining them ? Probably just have to take it but if cost of import moves about with Aussie dollar value, dealer costs could become an interesting variable in a dealer purchase or import decision (excluding warrenty and service considerations).

Standard car @ around 150k = 7.5k in stamp duty + 1k reg

How much pre-delivery (lot fees) did the dealer quote ?

Or how much is the premium package?

I doubt that Nissan will be able to honour their 'advertised' pricing stategty of the R35. As a business case, they would simply be making very little return if they even considered selling it for under $200K.

I have just imported one for a client, that arrived 2 weeks ago. Was purchased for JPY 8,900,000 directly from a Nissan dealer. Excluding compliance, and after paying duties, GST, LCT car owes him $170K EXCLUDING compliance and reg, with current exchange rate. No middle man. This is the actual price paid and what it owes him.

Abit stupid of Nissan to announce pricing when they did, given the amssive depreciation of our dollar, almost immediately after their announcement. Don't be surprised if pricing is very different to what they previously announced...

dealer advice on a Premium pack with metallic paint is;

$154k base (with paint $1750 option)

$12k LCT (@ 33% of GST exclusive portion above $57123 LCT threshold)

$5k stamp duty and dealer

$700 Rego/CTP

above numbers rounded out to protect the innocent .... drive away approx $172,500

Anyone got any experience with private insurance costs ? or is it too early for insurers to quote on yet ?

I'd imagine it would be very difficult to get an insurance quote from the majority of companies at this stage. They're always loath to providing insurance on imported vehicles. Maybe a broker is your best option.

I agree with what you're saying, but not sure how your customer got one for $170K under the current exchange rates. At the momeny 1 AUD buys 62 yen, and over the last few weeks it's even been down in the 50s.

so 8.9mil at 62JPY/dollar = $143,000

GST 10% = $14,300 ($157,300)

Duty 10% $15,730 ($173,030)

so that gets us to over $170K and we still haven't calculated LCT, or shipping, or any japanese costs. LCT will be around $30K. (actually can't remember if they did the LCT on the tax inclusive cost of car, or just the FOB value like they do with the duty and GST. if it is on the FOB LCT will "only" be $20K).

at current rates if I were to buy another R35 today I'd be estimating around $220K on road.

The one I have coming at the moment will almost certainly be the last one. luckily it was paid for when the AUD was still mighty strong, so I'll only be asking the old rate for it.

The thing with nissan is though they would have almost certainly hedged against their first 6 or 12 months allocation when they announced the pricing, so they probably hedged when the dollar was buying high 90s JPY. So at least for their first few batches they should be right. after that who knows what will happen.

it cost me the same to insure the second R35 I imported for $150K as it did to insure my R34 GTR and my R32 GTR for that matter. so not such a problem.

with the LCT, the GST exclusive part of 154K is 140K minus the 57K threshold leaves 85K then apply the 25% LCT (or is it 33 now? I'm sure it was 25% on the last 2) gives $20K at 25% or $27K.

and yep with the insurance for me with max NCB, under 30 but over 25, garaged, alarmed, low yearly kms, the price was very reasonable. I never deal with AAMI, NRMA etc, but never had a problem with shanons.

LCT has been increased to 33% is already included in the Nissan RRP of $148,800 and $152,800 for the Premium. The LCT increase, and general LCT bun fight in Canberra, was one of the reasons for the delay in the release of pricing. It is illegal to advertise a car price in AUS exclusive of GST and LCT.

Metallic paint is $1,750 (inc LCT), but "Super Silver" metallic is a BMW like $3,000.

Dealer delivery is where the dealers, rather than Nissan Aus are having a good gouge..

cool, that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

and yes I have heard some obscene costs quoted for dealer delivery and other dealer charges/options. but to be fair they surely will only be a small volume seller and do require an outlay for training, tools, parts inventory etc so I can see why they will want to tack on as much profit as they can onto the small number they'll sell.

Tell 'em the price Baron

LOL, well I don't know for sure yet, will have to do the sums once it's all here and complied, but I would estimate around the $170K mark ON THE ROAD drive-away.

and that is for a:

2008 R35 GTR, brand new direct from nissan JP, Dark metal grey, side air-bags, premium dark chrome wheels with the bridgestone tyres, 5 year paint protection coating, genuine floor mats (costs $2500 alone!), top of the line tracking alarm system, compliance, NSW rego, GST, Duty, LCT inclusive. basically just drive it away and pay rego transfer.

I think that is about the cheapest anyone will get an R35 of that spec on the road, registered either imported or through nissan aus. there is certainly no fat in the pricing anywhere. and it was shipped via 20ft sealed container to ensure no damage or wharf joy riding which adds to the cost too. and we had it covered in the nissan body protection wrap too before it left JP.

Cool. Which company provided the insurance? Was it Shannons?

170k is good!

Premium model? or normal with premium wheels?

yeah, it was shannons.

steve-o it started out as a base but we added a few of the premium options. there is little difference between. mainly just stereo, alarm and wheels/tyres.

and I reckon if you sold all your 26s and 30s and parts and cars you could afford it! I'll even knock a few K off for you if you let me have a steer every now and then!

here it is just before going into the container.

My R35 is fully insured

I paid $1240 for the year

Shannons quoted $1170 with limited use ie about 6000 kms a year

(helps if your an old fart with a good record of claims)

So the dealer delivery charge then is $12,800? That's $172,500 – $154,000(car inc LCT)-$5,000 (stamp)- $700 (rego). That's gota be a bloody record!

So you are familiar with charges for other cars of a similar type are you? I don't know myself but the guess is that these charges are comparable with other cars of similar performance. Is this wrong?

All this whinging about the R35 this, the R35 that. What about overpriced Euro badge cars and their purchase and ownership costs?

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
