Thanks for the compliments Dave! Though mine is the easy job... Terry was the one that took the awesome pics! Its not like digital now where you can delete the ones you bugger up... I have no idea if there are shots of 70's Japanese fashion.... though I have 6 1/2 carousels to go, so its quite possible! I'm sure Terry can let you know if there are any.

I wish I could put the higer res scans up, but its just not practical. Besides, the difference you see on screen is almost not even noticeable. You'd only really use the higher res scans for large prints.

Anyway, here are a few more... a few crackers here I reckon :) so enjoy!

Many Thanks Dave & Iron Chef for your comments! Much appreciated.

Ultimately when we get to Kyoto and later on Tokyo, I'm sure we'll encounter a few cars of 1975-76, and the way people dressed.

There's even a couple of whimsical moments involving children's dress + a couple cars further on again in Kushiro.

I only now recall that I had bought a 2nd hand Minolta camera body to enable me to use B&W film for contrast work.

Elaine and I were flaggergasted when we realised that the trip by car to Kagoshima Airport from Kagoshima City was over 50 minutes!

By the time we arrived, we had to check in within 5 minutes: the plane to Osaka already had its engines running and the seated passengers (mostly Japanese businessmen) were giving us filthy looks on boarding. ...you know..hehe..how a Japanese man is never NEVER LATE !!..so we had to be Gaijin eh?

terry and beau

thanks for sharing these pics! absoultely amazing. the shot of the street with shops along side and the elementary school boy walking with his bag is one of my favorites ;)

Yes, Thanks on behalf of Beau and myself for your 'wrap'!

It's comments like yours Akeenan, about what 'touches' you, that make this thread a success as well!!!! :P

Back to the 'old' but (in 1975-6) new 727 plane; and how we nearly missed the flight from Kagoshima to Osaka...

Elaine was apologising profusely to the seated but annoyed male passengers at the front of the aircraft, when I whispered in her ear,

"It's no good! Thery're too pissed off!"

Aw Shucks! That's a mighty compliment coming from a photographer such as you Sam.

When I fluff a couple in a row, I'll hope you're not around...

haha!:D

There is always so much character in old photos though, some thing that is definately lost in DSLR photos.

I've had a few busy days, so apologise for the delay! My little daughter is teething so its fun times at my place at the moment!!!

Anyway, here are the next few pics! I should finish the first carousel tonight.... see how things go!

Yeh thanks Beau for your banter. hehe

Back then, alligator-skin shoes and belts were in along with dacks like those lmao!

Trousers were even flared. Do you remember Chuck Norris in some of his films?

He'd won the World Karate Championships about 4X running and us guys used to try and emulate him in his dress on film sets.

When Steve McQueen became the new stud, we switched to jeans.

In Slide 1/106, notice just how much reinforcement there is behind the main gate. This was designed so that battering rams would have little effect. I'd mentioned before how gigantic some of the stones could be too.

In Slide 1/107, the foreground is taken up by azaleas. Native to Japan, Korea and China are a plethora of native bushes and plants that became world-wide. Besides Azaleas, there are Camelias, Rhododendrons, Orange Blossoms, Peach Blossoms, and in the season that I went, you'll notice Cherry Blossoms in these pics, especially around Nikko. The 100s of different types of tea are mainly from varieties of the Camelia bush. The Japanese often use Juniper and Weeping Maple trees as Bonsai as well.

PS We don't mind one bit about your daughter's needs for attention Beau - great job multi-tasking mate!

So do you Beau, or anyone else remember the Great Hanshin (or Kobe) Earthquake 13 years ago nearby?

Anyone there? Anyone experience the earth moving? Did Osaka cop any damage?

Apparently > 4000 people died in the Hyogo Prefecture!

It must be a bit tough living on a tectonic time bomb.

I love what school kids over there wear... it's just so cute...

When I was there I lived in a fairly rural area where foreigners weren't too common. I often had some of them looking up at me pointing and saying to their friends, "gaijin da, gaijin da" (foreigner, foreigner).... They were always surprised when I looked back at them, pointed and said "nihonjin da, nihonjin da"!! (Japanese, Japanese)...

Terry, I was only in primary school when the Earthquake came, and I do remember it. No tremors felt in Brissie though!

As for slides 10, 11 and 12, I'm not sure why the quality is like that... I tried to scan them a couple of times thinking I'd buggered the scan up. Maybe the actual slides are like that.

Edited by insanity

Hi Beau,

Yes, the slides on 2/10, 11 & 12 are like that because of a poor (Hanimex lol) flash unit. It's not your scanner.

I've just now noticed with amusement, how a pair of gloves are just lying on the pedestrian crossing.

Perhaps some driver threw down the gauntlet for a race haha.

Notice the type of vehicles there?

As you know, NARA was the capital city of feudal Japan; albeit for a short while.

It's situated on gently sloping/contoured land compared to Kyoto (the next capital city) which has mountains on several sides.

yeah I was thinking it might have been the flash... I know its hard to light up those far away areas of the temples that the punters can't access

I was thinking that with most Buddhist temples being so rustic, textured and au naturale looking, one should increase the power output of a flash what with the great distance between the entrance to upper reaches of the roof cavity; whereas with Heian, Shinto temples, with so much gloss & red in the decor, the flash power wouldn't need to be as great. I'd not thought of that before. hehe Cheers, Tez

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
