Hey guys,

yesterday i got a letter in the mail saying that on 11th november someone noticed my car may have a too loud exhaust and i now must get a decibel test at an approved place to gain a certificate to send back to the EPA to avoid a fine.

Now im glad its not a full EPA inspection but ive never heard of anything like this before; although it seems pretty straight forward.

Has anyone ever gone through this process before?

I hope i will pass considering my exhaust isnt very loud at all so i may just have to slip a 50 to the tester to pass me anyways lolz.

^^ true that...but my 2.5" kakimoto catback still past aswell as it is jasma. i do have 3" dump and front though with standard cat. i'm pretty sure u'll have to change or find someway to quieten ur exhast if its got a 3" or more pipe. if u have 2 big ass mufflers in between should be o.k but otherwise could be to loud.

although if u get it done, u pay the tester and then u fail, just like a rwc get it fixed up and tested again without the charge within a specified amount of time i think. gotta be under 90 decibels.

Wow thanks for the responses guys, so 90db is the limit ey!

I have a 3inch pipe; im counting on 2 turbos, a stock cat, mid muffler and rear muffler to be enough as i dont have a stock exhaust!!!

might have to pick one up asap if i dont pass, then again gazza i may just slip him 100bux; cbf fucccckn round.

stock ones register 80ish plus dont they? so ave yourself the trouble of paying for two tests and just wack a cat back stocker on. Some places will see that you have a stocker and wont bother pulling the machine out to test. Those are the places to go to. What sucks with the test is that cause of the engine size or whatever they have to rev it to 5k.

Just went though this whole load of shit, all the guy's that tested my car were pricks I tested 2 Db over and still he would'nt let me off pricks like I said. Anyhows I have a pea shooter rear section from near the diff that got me though the test if you need to lend it let me know pm me or call me on 0424603192 I'm in Boronis by the way so if your near by give me a call.

Thanks man i appreaciate it; will try first and pm you back soon

i can imagine them being pricks but ill see if i can bribe them first......money talks!!!

Yeah, don't think the 100 is going to cut it. Worst thing is, a stock exhaust wont cut it. A few years back they changed the rules. Instead of testing cars at 4000rpm or so, they decided to go for engines at around 2/3 of there RPM range. That means that a stock GTR is not street legal. A standard exhaust will still need a few extra baffles/mufflers.

By the way, the money talks website is awesome. Not that I google this sort of thing.

i got a stock exhaust off my stagea. same shit i think just untill the diff..

getting my mid muffler cut out on tuesday also, cant hear that RB note. cant even hear my exhaust as is now. full 3inch.

interested in muffler borrowing ?

Wow the epa are really a bunch of communist fagz!

i dunno how im gonna get outta this one but maybe if i wear a hannibal facemask and scare the shit outta him, he might pass me lolz

na money bribe is the only way, that and set my rev limiter to 3000rpm

Anyone selling a stock r34 gtr zorst? ill put a thread in the WTB section.

If yur gona try and bribe em dont bother I got the bolt on exhaust and test done for 170ish the test cost 39bucks so you might as well just buy the end section and be done with it, and have it ready to bolt on for the next time you get done!!!!

I had mine done in Ringwood check the list of aproved tester's and you should find them I cant remember the name of the joint but I was in and out in about 2.5 hour well worth you doing hope this helps :(

^ Was it Ace Exhausts or Performance Exhausts? Ace Exhausts have always looked after me. They're an approved noise tester and are happy to tell you if your car's too noisy to pass before they do the test :(

They are mearly doing thier job.

Ive got a full 3.5" exhaust, that passed under 90dB, so well made, there isnt a problem with flow & noise.

1. You cant limit your RPM. If you do that, you'll instantly fail because the car is not testable.

2. Bribe money wont work either, its a contact arrangement for testers, they get caught fudging they are fined and loose the license.

3. RPM test is 5200rpm for the RB26, and backoff noise is also noted/recorded these days.

4. They write down the makeup of the exhaust. If you put a stocker on, they will note that down. If you are busted again, and again with an aftermarket one but keep appeared with the stock one... a full EPA will come in the mail with a please explain

Other than that - there is a full EPA thread @ the top of this section.

The teat costs 40bux i think it said in the letter; i will pop my compliance cat in and see if it passes right off the bat, maybe i can get my tacho recalibrated to register higher eg: 500rpm advance

i will try to bribe them though as it has worked for me in the past at other places but hopefully it wont be needed, my zorst is just catback and quite chunky so i think it should be ok.

To stop this happening in future ill have another hotdog or midmuffler installed asap. Might also pickup a db meter off ebay and see what it picks up, that way i can lend it out to anyone who wants to do a home test.

-Johnny

UPDATE

just bought a dB meter of my own which i should get in 2-3 days.

anyone can feel free to come to my place and do a test if you get a letter in the mail or just wanna make sure your cars legal.

oh and to make sure the exhaust shop dosent try to lie to you; its accurate 2dB +/- at 134dB

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
