Hey guys,

Just wondering if an R34 GTR steering wheel would fit onto a 1996 R33 GTR. I currently have the standard R33 wheel with airbag and was thinking of the upgrade.

Would the R34 wheel fit and would everything work ok?

Thanks.

Thanks,

Called Powerplay this morning but they couldnt really help. The lady there said it went straight on but wasnt sure if airbag was connected etc.

I have had a quick look and it looks like the S1 has different connections to the S2 airbags. Dont really know how to get around this as i want to change the standard wheel to a S2 or R34 wheel with the airbag still working.

did you ever find out if it will work??

The R34 GTR wheel will only fit on the Series 3 R33 GTR with the dual airbags. It wont fit series 1. That also goes for the series 2 gts steering wheels.

Im pretty much stuck with the series 1 GTR steering wheel if i want to retain the airbag.

Series 2 also had dual airbags, from 1996 onward I believe....interesting fact, I wouldn't mind a R34 GTR steering wheel for my car :D

Yeah the wheel would fit a series 2 or 3 R33. But not Series 1 which is what i have.

So 180, did you find any replacement or are we doomed to sticking with the S1 steer wheel? I too have a S1 GTR and was wanting to change the wheel.

Unfortunately if you wana retain an airbag then s1 wheel is the only option. Only other thing is get an aftermarket wheel and get a boss kit which takes care of the airbag light.

I used to have one, but removing the airbag makes your illegal under Victorian law, not sure about other states but its probably illegal to not have an airbag if the car came with one...

well obviously if removed and the vehicle was manufactured with it...would be a defect.

but what i meant was to install the wheel......obviously the air bag is in tact but doesnt have to be connected.

no ones gonna test it...you think you bring it to a mechanic for pink slip for $20.... they are going to dismantle the steering wheel and get their multi meter out, because he realises its an R34 GT-R wheel on the wrong vehicle?!

dude ive been passed with bald tires for an extra 10$ for pink slip

G'Day Mate, just wondering if I can install a series 2 steering wheel rather than having my series 1?

Will I still be able to retain my air bag?

i heard somewhere that you can actually retrofit the series one airbag into the R34 wheel. Not sure how safe it is but as long as you bolt it securely into the mount i can't imaging there would be an issue.

im getting one put on my s1 33 gtr on friday. i dont c y u cant just cut the 2 different types of plugs off the 34 and 33 wheels and reconnect 2 plugs that match up coz after all its only the plugs that u cant connect

Yeah I've got a series 2 steering wheel at home that's been wired up to fit a series 1. The airbag light doesn't come on, but i don't think the airbag would work though, however; i'm not willing to test it. :P

Hey I am keen to do this on mine as well, just worried that it might not be the safest idea.

In theory it should still work, what makes you think that it wont work mate?

Its also a good sign that they airbag warning light doesn't come on.

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
    • I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all I hope everyone is all okay
    • Yeah, I guess its pretty easy to get to if this doesn't work. Just wait till next oil change and pull it out. I am going to have to do the oil pan gasket soon and thought I'd just replace it while I was there.  Thanks
    • All that matters is you're safe and you were able to type that post. Hopefully heaps of parts you can recover for the next shell.
