the only thing is the licence must say national rally. a guy went to service tas with his cams national rally nav licence, and they said no becasue he dosn't drive. so we whipped out his aasa national rally licence, and he got his si plates.

Josh....sounds like you have the same sort of idiots we do in our RTA. WTF is the point of rally import if you cannot register a rally imported car. Because you can't rally an unregistered car either.

They told me a race only import was for racing on race tracks where you wouldn’t require rego. I kindly referred him back to Targa Tasmanian (I figured even this douche bag knew of the event) and asked him to explain to me how there are race only cars on race only rego competing.

What can you do though, these guys control the system, abuse them and you’ll have no hope.

Here is the thing. I warned a friend about this early last year after hearing some CAMS guys telling me that the strings were going to get tightened.

The Rally Reg was originally introduced so that cars that were not released locally could be raced in state and national rallies. ie EVOs and STIs etc. As others have said the cars needed to be registered for transport stages etc

The rego type was never intended for people to be importing cars that can be complied and registered. The warning i got was if i get a race rally import, makes sure that the car isnt eligible to be complied. If that model can be complied then import it properly and get proper registration for it.

So i dont agree with it, but i know that there were people complaining how some high profile tarmac cars should not be running rally rego and only dirt/gravel rally cars should be allowed to run this rego.

So it seems there is people pushing agendas and its a matter of whether you are lucky enough to be talking with one of the for people rather then the against

hang on Roy.....are you trying to say the people high up in CAMS are too busy playing politics to encourage people to get out and race in any way possible!???! No way.

its right though. The scheme was designed for rally cars to allow them to be used on the road (as they have to in a rally). Its not intended to allow a circuit race car to drive to/from events. My understanding from when I was rallying was that you had to have a National Rally Licenece and the car had to be CAMS log booked as a rally car. The Rego used to be cheaper but isn't any more in QLD if my memory serves.

Thats my belief too Harry, NR licence and CAMS vehicle log book.

And I've heard there's a bit of paperwork hassle come renewal time too... like the vehicle is required to compete in events or something...... although how they could police that I'm at a loss to explain, like, the car could be in a shop for repair for a year easily.....

LOL, i have some interesting conversations about "grass roots" motorsport around camp fires in the bush with regards to making it accessible. It seems they want everybody out in the bush not on the black stuff. Which is strange since rallys require massive amounts of coordination with Parks and Wildlife, residents etc vs cash for track owners. I dont get it

Simular issues here in WA too, used to be able to rego a car for tarmac, or gravel, however, as a new scheme was meant to be comming in, and it hasn't one ass clown has taken it apon himself to can any car getting rally rego, unless it will be used on one dirt rally a year..

which is all well and good if your going dirt, but all the tarmac boys cop it in the ring, and given the ARC is basically dead, and even club level dirt rally is in a slump at the moment, most people are going tarmac, understandably because it cheaper and your less likely to total a car so in WA its extremely popular now, so this one ass clwon is helping no one escept the few who are going dirt..

if and when the new scheme comes in it will be a lot easier for all concerned and get rid of the issue of cars kicking around on b-reg as daily drivers, and there are a lot of s6 sx7's like that...

Bumping this thread

Two possible solutions so far:

1) Hook up with a cousin and move to Tasmania

2) Fit some 15X6s, stocker suspension and enter a few bush bashing events

    • Mixing things up - installed some leather recaros to match the leather seat covered rear seats. Interior looks pretty schmick now except for some slight wear on the steering wheel which I will monitor and address if it becomes worse or actually noticeable!

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
