Hi everyone,

I've been looking around the forums and have found that it appears all the ER34 stock turbos have been badged as 'Nissan'.

I had a poke around the engine bay yesterday and noted on my car the turbo has been badged as a 'Garret'. I was wondering if this is normal or not?

I've a 2000 model which Nissan did some cosmetic revision to anhd thats it to my knowledge.

Can anyone confirm if the turbo in my car is stock?

I'll try to get some pics but its so well hidden.

Cheers and thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on SAU before that the series 2 GTT (2000 onward) had Garret stamped on the stock turbo ..it was just slightly different from the s1 (metal vs plastic exhaust wheel??).. same power though.

i guess the question here is, do you have any reason to suspect its an aftermarket unit?

i mean if i was selling a car, and it had a different turbo on it, i would bump up the price

and list it with an aftermarket turbo, why would you sell it for a lower price, and not say it has a bigger turbocharger on it

what other mods did the car come with? it would be fairly obvious it it had a different turbocharger fitted, not to mention the price

how does it feel to drive?

i guess if its an aftermarket piece you would be noticing a hell of a lot of lag if it doesnt have things like injectors and AFM etc etc, thats also making the assumption its a bigger turbo than the 34 standard turbo. Get some pics up of the engine bay... i dunno if the 33's had nissan stamped on them did they? maybe its a turbo of a 33. I dunno jsut taking wild guess... new engine? or origional engine?

from going around at shops that sells secondhand turbo's and some info from the net,

The rb20 turbo has Nissan and 16v carved at the housing

for the rb25's, also has the Nissan and 45v* as there are many models that i have seen/found.

45v1,45v2,45v3,and 45v4

the v1 came from VG30 engines

v2 and v3 comes from the rb25det r33 (not sure S1/S2)

v4 came from R34 gtt's.

most of the V4 turbo's that i have seen has steel fin compared to the plastic/ceramic fin from early models.

thus can boost higher....

anybody can confirm my finding?

Had the car checked out at RE Customs and it is indeed an aftermarket Garrett unit. Has the Garrett stamp on it with from what I can make out, AR.64

I'm due for a follow up booking to dismantle the unit and find out more about the item before conducting a retune upon identifying if there are more supporting mods (Injectors, Pump, etc).

Yay for me!

Actually I read a thread from Thailand (if I remember correctly) anyway, there was strong agreement that there are 3 series of turbos on the R34 - the series 3 had a garrett stamped turbo with steel wheels that had different compressor housing and compressor wheel (all a couple of mm larger).

One guy was discussing how he managed to find one at auction in Japan and put it on his R33. So it seems the garrett turbo was stock for the last series (which they didn't sell many of)

If you google search you should be able to find it - somewhere.

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
