I do have a GT2540, but my friend still has the stock turbo and his motor does the same sound, just not as loud.

Stock gearbox too, only mod is a shortshifter and nismo clutch & flywheel on the drivetrain.

Oh and BTW, I want your rims ahah

Hmmm... Interesting...

I was gona say worn out rear diff LOL! But no... Thats more of a "whoo" sound

Might have to ask afew tech heads on here.

LOL! Thats not my car in my signature. I have Volk TE 37's and no rear spoiler.

Yes Nismo LMGT4's are nice and I want them too! Hehe!!

some gearbox set ups can sound like a supercharger......

the Supra JZA80 6-speed Getrag can actually have a spooling whistle...

but the sound you hear in the video, is definately the turbo.......

my guess is the type of low quality video camera used..... ....

video cams can make things sound different than to the real thing

Yeah, it can be hard with those kind of sounds, a mate with an EL XR8 had a gearbox or diff whine sort of like that, my old VN had a REALLY loud supercharger type noise due to the clutch for the aircon being stuck on permanently, and like I said before, turbo gasket with a piece missing started it in the R32 (though when that happened, it was also extremely laggy and the noise seemed to go away on fullboost).

It's not straight cut gears or something modified in the gearbox like that is it?

^^Yeah bozodos thats what I was thinking of as well... Square / Straight Cut Gears in the gearbox...

I remember hearing a VN Commie when I was living in Ballarat and the car looked stock but we heard this "Whine" and a friend said to me it sounded like Square / Straight Cut Gears.

Guys, do some trouble shooting..................

Can't be diff hey, the noise is there while the car is stationary.

Can't be gearbox hey, the noise is there while he's got the clutch in. Certainly sounds like box but he's got that clutch in.

Can't be turbo as it spools up matching engine rpm, just like a supercharger and NOT like a turbo.

So I'm thinking power steer pump

waterpump

Gates timing belt

crook tensioner/idler

Whatever, I wouldn't be thrashing it like that until I'd done some simple checks.

are we talking about the wirring sound on idle? cause everything else sounds normal. if it is the wirring sound my bet is its an aftermarket timing belt.

My car makes the same sound though not as loud even though I used a genuine timing belt for the 100k service. I can really hear it when i blip the accel.

but i agree with grigors diagnosis

I'm talking about the "supercharger" sound the car makes while accelerating. You can hear it clearly at 0:50.

It's not turbo spool, cause you can hear the turbo spooling and it's not this sound I'm talking about.

HAHA yeah i know the one (00)Skyline(00), happens a lot on V6's! Mine was an 8 and different sound to that in particular, you could hear it at idle and the sound increased linearly with the revs. It was also a deeper whine, more like a Gilmer belt drive.

in that video, it sounds like it goes away when the clutch is in and then comes back when it goes out. But then it appears to do that in neutral as well :S

Thinking about it, a mates Passage sounds a tad like this too, it also has a HKS Turbo.

The only cars i've heard with straight cut gears incidentally (all WRX's) kind of make a TIE Fighter like sound, which that is not. I could be wrong though!

ok .. updates .. car does it when clutch is not in, in gears or neutral .. but when I press the clutch, it stops ! Gears, are kinda harder then my old R32 to put in. So.. aftermarket transmission ? Or simply the nismo clutch & flywheel thats does this sound.

It does the same exact sound as this car

Sounds like I have a dogbox on my car .. woot ! I now need to change my changing gear method.

Updates .. looks like I can't change gear without using the clutch like a dogbox would. Tried this, full throttle, lno throttle, change gear, full throttle, didn't work at all...

All I know now it that the sound goes off when I press the clutch.Would a changed gear set with syncros do that sound ? Does a straight cut gear exist with syncros ?

i think you'd somehow notice a dogbox.... probably around the time you paid $4k more than you were expecting and the previous owner said "that's because it has a dogbox"

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
