hey guys got a s1 rb25det and i am rebuilding it and i want to do it once and right. ive read a bit and i see that harmonic balancers suprisingly play a big role in motors. so i have looked up ross balancers but i dont think they do rb25s???

what brand do you reccomend and who sells them at good prices. im in bris but i dont think it matters where i get it from as i can just get it posted.

yes i did search but im retarded and probably went right past this exact thread. sorry if that the case haha.

cheers, Steve.

Hey Steve,

What brand... ATI http://www.atiracing.com/

Where to get one...

Aussie Stock, if you want it soon

CJ motors - contact Jackie

If you dont mind the wait..

Summit Racing

Horsepowerparts

You can run a Rb26 balancer on your Rb25 but it will require a few mods. see below..

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Fi...amp;mode=linear

well 380 from nexus or 540 from high octane. though the ones from nexus say they are made from the ross machine wich is what hi octane sell.

what to do.....

well there is word that the current ross balancers are better. but I can count a number of people I know personally who had a ross and stopped using it in favour of an ATI. I know 1 case where the guy had a ross, had it replaced with a newer model ross and still had to go to an ATI in the end. yes the ATI cost more, but I guess it's a case of getting what you pay for.

the precision parts ones look good but I have no experience with them. if you are really hard core consider a garage saurus crank pulley. they are solid, no rubber. but supposedly if engine is balanced well they are a good way to go.

what was the reason/s he/they stopped using the ross ones? no point saying they are crap and the ati ones are far superior if there arent any real reasons

thrown balancer and stuffed 7K crankshaft...now runs ATI and has been faultless...over 1150AWHP

i can get a few things from the above...

crank bolt came lose - who didnt do it up/put it on properly?

crankshaft snout out of round/out of tolerance - who didnt check crank/balancer tolerance?

balancers dont just come off by themselves

or is there something else that happened?

you can guess or make asumptions...here are some things that "are" known...the workshop in question has built almost all of australia's highest powered GTR's up until a few years ago...they own a 2 metre long torque wrench to do all their balancers up. This was the 1st time they have used a Ross balancer, they use the correct process to install them, they have never had a problem in the past and have never had an issue since, the crankshaft was a brand new full counterweight item. This was the older style Ross item which was little more than a glorified pulley for the belts. I understand that Ross since then have changed their design.

i was in the same boat choosing a harmonic balancer a few weeks back, some ppl here dont like ross yet www.ripsracing.com use these on all of their street and drag engines including their drag 1300hp donks, that confirmed my decision. fyi, rips build and ship engine packages all over the world.

i think the above mentioned failure was a factory fault...for example, my dad bought a torana ss 5.0ltr and it spun a bottom end bearing after a few yrs. do we draw from this incident that all toranas are unreliable? no smart ass comments :nyaanyaa:

    • I refreshed the OEM injectors with the kit and connected it up. It now ideals okay even with the IACV removed. Driving still has the same cutoff issue like the 550cc injectors so the issue is somewhere else. I bought FPG's Fuel Pump Hanger. I will be installing it next, but it is not as straightforward as I thought it was with my limited wiring knowledge and no instruction on the specific model I purchased (FPG-089). I also got the incorrect billet clamp as I could not find info on the OEM sizing.
    • Stop looking at the garage floor, and turn the radio up a bit louder if there's any strange noises...
    • No. Turbo shuffle and surge/flutter are not the same thing. Specifically, on a GTR, turbo shuffle has a definite meaning. On a GTR, the twin turbos are assumed to be the same thing and to operate the same way, exactly. In reality, they do not. Their exhaust sides are fed and exhaust a little differently, to each other. Their inlet sides are fed and exhausted a little differently, to each other. Consequently, when they are "working" they are often at slightly different points on the compressor map compared to each other. What this means, particularly when coming on boost, is that one of them will spool up and start producing extra flow compared to the other, which will put back pressure on that other compressor, which will push the operating point on that other compressor up (vertically). This will generally result in it bumping up against the surge line on the map, but even if it doesn't, it upsets the compressor and you get this surging shuffle back and forth between them That is "turbo shuffle" on a GTR. It is related to other flutter effects heard on other turbo systems, but it is a particular feature of the somewhat crappy outlet piping arrangement on RB26s. There are plenty of mods that have been attempted with varying levels of success. People have ground out and/or welded more material into the twin turbo pipe to try to prevent it. Extending the divider inside it works, removing material doesn't. There are aftermarket replacement twin turbo pipes available, and these exist pretty mush purely because of this shuffle problem.
    • You can temporarily* use lock collars to keep it in place until you can do the bushes, back the nuts off, slide them in, snug back up. *temporarily is often for ever
    • Thanks for the quick reply. To be clear, when you say turbo shuffle do you mean turbo flutter "stustustu" or referring to something else? I had thought they were the same thing. When I wrote the post my intention was to say it wasn't a flutter/compression surge sound. My understanding was that a flutter sound would be occurring when throttle is released, whereas I can keep the throttle in the same position for this noise
