hey guys

had a leaking abs unit in my 32 and swapped it out for one from a gtr

lines all matched up nicely and everything but i'm not 100% convinced that its working

when i turn it on it sounds like its priming itself (never did this before)

and i think i am able to still lock the brakes up (hard to lock them with good pads and 18 inch chromies)

So, does anyone know if the are compatible or if i have to change anything to get it to work propperly?

(or have the propper bleed procedure for it?)

Thanks

Tom

I had a similar failure. I believe the unit was replaced with a GT-R unit; no problems with the operation of ABS.

You are more likely to lock the wheels with good pads, and I would expect "chromies" would make no difference. Why do you want to lock the brakes anyway? I rarely activate the ABS on mine, even during spirited driving.

Just bleed them in the normal course of events; I usually leave the ABS unit until last.

ok must be in my head then

also brakes only lock up when there is to much pressure in 1 point instead of a distributed load that causes the pad to grip (this is what i read)

good brakes should be able to pull up much harder without locking

just got a cm or two of slack b4 the pedal goes hard

but it is apparently normal with the abs

did you bleed the abs unit? the better the brakes the easier it is to lock the wheels.

All you need to do to test it is get the car to 80-100, and stamp on the brakes. You should feel the abs through the pedal, and you should be able to hear the unit pumping. if the abs isn't working you'll get none of that, and you'll pull up in a cloud of tyre smoke.

yeah i know what abs feels like

and kinda re bled the abs unit but i didn't have any hose and was just doing it with a rag and only a couple of pumps cos it was making a mess

couldnt see any bubbles coming out tho but will attempt it again when i find some tubeing

does anyone have a definitive procedure to bleed the mofo?

car on? car off? battery disconnected? either one first?

would love to get rid of the squishyness

i've alway blead it with the car off, get someone in the car, get them to push on the brakes, and you open the valve. when he gets to the firewall close the valve, then he lifts off the brake. Rince and repeat, till there is no air.

order to do it is LR, RR, LF, RF, ABS R, ABS F. If all of that makes sence. And don't forget to keep topping the master cylinder up.

yup no worries

had a guy of the tassie section help me do it when i upgraded to slotted fronts (and fluid was in a bad way and the abs was leaking too so that got changed)

we did it the same but with the abs first and no order of pref on the order of lines for the abs unit

will bleed again (just abs first) and see how i go

Merli, im not sure what happend cos its been a while but will try on a quiet road tonight and let you know

thanks for the help guys

  • 3 weeks later...

bit of a long reply

but...

bled the abs unit again (few tiny bubbles in there)

made no difference at all to pedal length (the length of the soft bit)

was doing 80 on a wet road

STOMP!!!

and the fronts just locked and slid

i think the left locked first tho (but only just)

also

sometimes when braking hard i can hear a grating noise (is this common with slotted rotors?)

what do gtrs have?

32 GTR's have a yellow warning light for the ABS... It's with the left hand side warning lights on the top left of the 4 lights there.

Mine lights up on ignition but goes out very quickly - not sure if that is normal operation or not...

Can anyone tell me if the warning light comes on during activation of the ABS?

No it doesn't.

Didn't think it did come on, but thought I'd check.. I have recently replaced my ABS unit as well... Gave it one test, and felt the peddle pulse...

No thanks on the gravel road, suspension is harsh enough on normal roads

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
