there may be some confusion about helmets arising from a recent email from Dean at John Bowe - the original promotion for this event was that helmets were not mandatory. i have just spoken with Dean a few minutes ago and he confirms this, but we agreed that you are welcome to use a helmet for the higher speed sessions in the afternoon.

so helmets are not mandatory required equipment, but you can use one if you have one. Dean sent out an email to this effect while i was on the phone just now.

other than that, please read the receipt / Booking Confirmation that he has emailed you and go through the checklist again.

i'll email/PM everyone details on meeting up in the morning if you want to go up to Mallala with a group. any other problems, please let me know.

Luke(heslo), any update on the meeting point and time for the morning before heading to Mallala?

you didnt get PM??

Can someone please email or PM the checklist that was sent out - my main hard drive failed last weke and I lost everything on it .... I don't remember getting a PM either about meeting point/time

Having trouble getting in contact with Kim so I'll make out own meet at City Dismantlers on Main North Rd at 7:15 for leave at 7:30. This will give us ample time to leave and be at Malalla by 8:30 which is when registration starts. Please, please, please be fueled up to go before hand, if not there will be a stop for fuel but just to be safe fill up before hand. If details change (I get in touch with Kim) I'll update my post.

Cheers guys

sorry guys. i have been in Melbourne for work since Friday so fell off the grid for a while! i will PM/email the meet details out whilst watching the F1 tonight, but Luke has the right idea already.

cheers - Kim

Mallala is ~60km from North Terrace via National Highway A1 and usually takes 60min from the city in morning traffic. If you have not been to Mallala before or can't quite remember how to get there, then you're welcome to join the group at the meeting point.

0715 meeting point at City Dismantlers (31 Port Wakefield Rd, Gepps Cross)

0730 depart for Mallala with optional stop at BP Bolivar

0820 arrive at Mallala

0830 registration + compulsory vehicle check (scrutineering) from 0830am. tea & coffee provided

0900 start

1230 lunch provided. fuel may be available at the track.

1600 end of trackday

Participation in meeting up at City Dismantlers is purely optional. If a few of you want to arrange to meet up in a smaller group elsewhere and meet us at the track, then that's fine - as long as you are aware of the distances and travel times. Some of you may want to meet up at Macca's for breakfast along the way - that's cool. If you wish to travel to Mallala by yourself on the day, then that is your perogative - it's just not as fun :)

If you have to refuel and do those last minute tyre pressure checks, then you can either go 10km up from the initial meet point to the Caltex on the LH side of Pt Wakefield Rd or to the BP on the RH side (corner of Pt Wakefield + Bolivar Rds - be in RH lane for RH turn onto Bolivar Road). We will go past Adelaide International Raceway (AIR) at Virginia/Waterloo Corner. AIR will be on your left. Take the RH turn off to Two Wells / Mallala ~35km out from City Dismantlers.

0.0km set odometer to zero at City Dismantlers

9.4km City Dism to BP Bolivar ~15min (>25min in traffic)

35.0km turn off to Two Wells / Mallala

41.0km BP Bolivar to Mallala ~40min

------

50.4km from meeting point to Mallala racetrack.

* We will not wait at the meeting point beyond the set times

* If you are late, you will have to get there solo.

* No exceptions. Not even me - and i'm usually late!

* Keep to the speed limit on your way to the track - the last thing that we want is police attention, speeding fines or defect notices being served to spoil the day.

i've emailed almost everyone some extra information. i wasn't able to do a group PM here due to this board's flood control (whatever)

see you all first thing Tuesday morning! make sure that you all get a good night's sleep before the trackday - please don't muck around with your car all night and lose vital sleep.

So what tyre pressures are people setting? Earlier posts said 26psi. The document from John Bowe says 42-46psi. I understand that tyre pressures will increase as the day goes on. Is anybody taking a generator to make increases to tyre pressure if we set them around 26-28psi but they do not increase to track day levels?

only one post said 26psi.

you missed my reply (post #220) so here it is again:

the instructors recommend that you start with 42-45psi with street tires to stiffen the side walls for cornering - this is Item 1 of your pre-trackday checklist that is part of the course receipt that Dean from John Bowe Driving has emailed ALL of you going.

this also prevents the tire rolling on the rim with hard cornering, but i suspect that many of you have stretched profile tires anyway :D

i would start with minimum 38psi cold (17"-18" street tires) before you leave home as it will probably rise to 40+ by the time you reach Mallala. it is better to have over inflated tires rather than under inflated as you can always let excess pressure out there (unless you have a portable compressor or pump with you). and dstroy is right - your tire temps won't increase a lot if it is a cold/wet day.

for semi slicks, you would start with 28-30psi cold as these can increase to 34-36psi when hot (after hard cornering, acceleration and braking). you would adjust the pressure for these tires in between laps based on the tire wear across the tread face (need edge to edge wear).

I usually stay around 36psi with my kumho's, but they are stretched :D

also have popped a tyre off the rim before due to running to low pressures.

Thats what you get with a 235 tyre on a 10 inch rim :D

that is EXACTLY why you should higher tyre pressures on the track. it also pays to check your tyre pressures regularly after each session to see what's happening to them.

Cheers for the response Kim.

I have 275/35/18 Kumho KU36 on 18x10" BBS rims. Think I'll follow your advice and put 38psi in on Monday night.

Gepps Cross by 0715. :D I live down south and am a night owl. If I didn't have indoor soccer tomorrow night I'd have stayed in a hotel close to Mallala on Monday night. May have to drug myself to fall asleep early and get up by 0530.

Just checked the BoM for Tuesday: Tuesday - A few showers. Windy. Min 10 Max 15. Damn! Wanted a dry track/day.

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
