Hey guys,

I have some quick questions, my car is stock standard only has Catback exhaust and after market apexi airfilter pods. Everytime i get in the car ,it smells like fuel... is that normal for r32 gtr? or is there something wrong with it?

Secondly, Full tank of petrol can only go for 320kms, Is that normal? Maybe i need to retune it or something? because of the airfilter?

Thirdly, I just bought Xd9 18"rims last week. it was very close to the guard so i needed to get it rolled. Got the guards rolled 2 days ago, the paint cracked on one side as warned by the roller. He said that the left rear guard had been fixed or soemthing before and it has completely no metal at all. Anyway i want to know whats the best way to fix this?

Please help me out guys

Cheers

Mine smells of fuel sometimes, they just do for some reason. Have a look for any fuel leaks.

Welcome to the world of high performance (read: high fuel consumption) cars. I get 400 to 450 out of a tank if I drive it economically. Are you still running standard boost?(about 7psi/0.5bar i think)

It's pretty common for the rear wheel arches to rust out due to the salt on Japanese roads and sounds like your was just patched with bog. Mine were cut out and new metal welded in. You'll have to take it to a panel beater to get it fixed properly.

Im running my car with standard boost 7psi and theres still only 350kms for a full tank, so im assuming its might be out of tune?

Yea, the guard roller said if i fix it they just gonna put more bog on??

You smell fuel, probably because you don't have a catalytic convertor, or yours have been hollowed out.

350kms is a bit low, but not stupidly so... Car might be running rich. Standard ECU?

Take the car to a panel beater... They'll have to bog up the guard again, and repaint it... Of if you want to do it properly, pay them to weld in some more metal, hammer it back into shape and then repaint.

I havent come across any skyline, turbo or not that doesnt smell like fuel while idleing.....

Another thing that might cause the high fuel consumption is if the O2 sensor(s) are not working, so the car runs rich all the time.

+1, i recon its more likely than not your 02 sensors, everyone forgets to change them but nissan recomends changing them every 40 000km or so.... mines not a gtr but when i first got the car i was getting 250ishkm/tank.... change the ot sensor, new spark plugs, throtle body clean, afm clean and now up to 500km/tank while running 10psi boost and about 200rwkw, if i drive it harder i still get 400km/tank at worst....

ive owned a couple and only 1 ever smelt of raw fuel , it actually turned out to be the injectors that were leaking :D

So you're talking inside the car right? Check the seal on the fuel tank. In the boot there's a metal plate held on by four screws to the right of the wheel well. Under it there's a big black ring that holds the fuel pump and gauge assembly. There's a seal that sits between the assembly and the ring. Make sure that seal is in good condition and the ring is tight.

Other than that i've used gaffa tape around the metal plate to stop any fumes from entering the boot. The boot doesnt have an airtight barrier into the cabin, so any smell in the boot gets straight into the cabin.

FWIW i dont think my car smells bad outside. Cat and o2 sensors are known good.

Yes i want to get it done properly no point of having more bog :D. So much money spending on the car but i mean my car is in good condition interior is perfect, engine bay is very clean, just stupid rust underneath the rear.

do you think i could get it check up at the mechanics? or do i need to find a skyline specialist to fix this problem?

this is what i would be checking.

you would want to check that the fuel tank doesn't have any perished breather hoses and also that the fuel injectors aren't leaking, rather common for these early jecs/bosch fuel injectors to leak from the body and they must be replaced they can not be repaired.

whether it's a gtr, vl commodore, nissan exa, very common now they are getting on in age...

Hey LoNgStAr!

First time poster for me in the NSW thread as I'm from VIC.

As some has already said on here,

Check your fuel injectors to see if they are leaking or not... If they are not leaking, run a can of injector cleaner next time you fill up your fuel tank.

Check you O2 Sensors out with your mechanic.

Check for any leaks in the fuel tank area. Fill up a full tank, take it for a drive, come home and park it over night as next morning see if there is any fuel stains around the rear area... Get mechanic to check it out... Look under the car for any leaks too.

350kms, that sounds low but not bad... I get about 250kms from half a tank and about 450kms - 500kms full tank.

See how you go.

Hey long,

It's basically gonna be one of what's been said so far. Either injectors, fuel lines, 02 sensors or a leak somewhere around the fuel pump cover itself. Yes a computer will help with fuel consumption but that's an extreme measure just to try and fix the consumption part.

On another note, got any pictures of how the xd9's look on the car? Love these wheels on gtrs... =)

    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.
    • Or, is it a case of what it is like owning an R series Skyline? NFI what the previous owner has done or fiddled with... Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.
