My 4th gear synchro is getting a bit dodgy, so just wondering who has had a GTR gearbox rebuilt locally?

Any feedback on where you went and what sort of job they did would be appreciated. Anything negative, maybe PM me would be best.

Cheers,

JD

I haven't had a Skyline box rebuilt, but had my Subaru's box prepped and rebuilt by Josh @ AutoTorque in Phillip.

Josh knows his gearboxes very well and is an awesome guy to deal with. I shall be heading to him in the next few months in regards to my current box and its options (just syncros atm).

My workmate Tim rebuilds manual and auto gearboxes and does repairs if it only requires repairs (cheaper than rebuilding the whole box depending on whats wrong with it ) ...

Monaro Automatics / Rusden motors

22 Lyell st Fyshwick

02 62806263

Ring up for a quote ... ask for Tim directly as he may be able to do a weekend job at work cheaper than normal workshop rates

i had my gearbox rebuilt recently,

Advanced transmissions in mitchell (Address: 3/86 Hoskins Street, Mitchell, ACT. Phone: 02 62410567). was going to be a 2-3 day turn around but my 5th gear needed to be replaced turned out to be a 4 day turn around including sourcing the replacement 5th gear. all brand new genuine seals, bearings and syncros.

works like new.

the problem with "repairs" on a skyline box is that everything is press fit onto the shafts in the gearbox. so to get to the 2nd gear syncros you have to pull everything for the first gear off too etc.

All good info thanks folks.

I will drag out the yellow pages tomorrow and try and visit a few places through the week and sound them out - to be honest, I wouldn't get it done anywhere that hadn't done a GTR box before. Advanced and AutoTorque sound promising, if I manage to get some rough quotes i'll post them up for the benefit of the others that are interested.

And Jon, if you can find somewhere that will do a group buy for much less than 3k a box let me know as i'll be in.

Oh, and Steve-O - I think i'll pass on the smurf's blood thanks.

whats the oil called

You mean the smurf's blood? Redline Lightweight Shockproof.

As much as we all like to bag it, it actually seems to have (at least temporarily) made my dodgy 4th gear synchro much less noticeable. Only get a slight crunch now if shifting too fast, which is mostly avoidable. Still looking at a rebuild in the longer term, but haven't had a chance to suss out the local workshops yet.

The only place that I know of that definitely sells the Redline stuff is Reliance in Isa St.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
