Hey guys, I'm looking at preparing a locally delivered S14 200SX for track use, and I wanted to make sure I stayed within the rules n regs of the MSCA in case I get around to competing in their sprints.

Now AFAIK the car is eligible under their marque cars, but what I'm confused about is which category it fits in under. Now the SR20 being a 1998cc engine should be a Class C Marque car right? The only cars I can find in Class C are CRX's and Elise's. Is there some sort of penalty for turbo cars that aren't covered in the Sup Regs i'm reading?

The only person I could find who races a 200sx s14 in VIC is Simon Hall, and he seems to be lumped in Class J, which according to the sup regs is Non Marque 2500cc to 3499cc car (another supreg refers to it as a Modified Marque Car over 3001cc)... this one I'm assuming:

I've also got some questions about the regs wit regards to wheels and modifications allowed, but I'll wait for some responses to this one first.

not familiar with the local MCSA rules, but turbos have a 1.7 multiplier on capacity. So if class C is up to 2000cc the silvia won't make it. You would be 1998x1.7 = 3397.

Don't know about the "marque" bit, under normal cams rules s14 fits into category 2 (sports cars) and normally production sports cars

If they did in fact run a turbo penalty, then the car should be in Class D (2500cc-3499cc) as its a Marque car. Which is alright I suppose. Dunno why the S14 I was looking at was classified as a Non-Marque Car?

It should be in D, if it is in the CAMS Marque Sports Cars list.

Talk to Gerhard ([email protected]) - he's the comp sec and MSCA rep for NDSOC. You could also talk to Jeremy ([email protected]) - he runs a 200SX (highly modded, and quick!) - that's him in your first post.

Only rule I would look out for is to do with tyres - racing tyres (not road-use approved), then you will be in Race class.

cheers fellas, knew I'd get more answers in here.

looking into getting into club sprints, and MSCA seems to be the easiest to get involved with, and the rules don't seem too constrictive.

Ideally I'd like to build the car as a drift car, but also be able to use it on the sprint days. So I want to make sure any mods I do are kosher by both regs. Stuff like wheels are fine, I can swap those for factory ones (not sure, but I read that you're allowed to run 2" wider if supplied by factory, but if you run aftermarket you have to run the same width as factory supplied?).

I want to try and keep it out of the race class as I don't really have the budget to mix it up with the big boys yet. Plus the car's gonna be a gradual build and as I'm a complete newbie at sprints I wanna work on lines and technique first in a relatively unmodded car, just enough safety and stopping mods to keep me out of trouble.

I'll try and drop by on Wed. Are they OK with randoms bugging them about regs n stuff?

cheers fellas, knew I'd get more answers in here.

Jeremy is a great guy and no doubt would be happy to answer any questions about the car or class etc

It used to be that you had to be a member of one of the MSCA clubs. I haven't been involved in the organisation side for a few years, so I'm not sure if that is still applicable.

We're all here for the same reason - pretty sure they won't mind.
Curries on a racetrack... i dunno whats more dangerous

that's generations of driving like taxi drivers, tailgating and cutting people off... i think I'll be right at home on a racetrack.

actually I'm more worried that my car is candy pink. will undoubtedly need to be stripped n resprayed if i don't wanna become the laughing stock of MSCA.

Both Jeremy and Simon are now in Class D (which is marque sports cars). Lindsay has changed the classification for the 200SX, but my 180SX remains in class J.

Pfft we've been running pink S15's in production racing for years. It just makes you stand out and be remembered even if it's for all the wrong reasons :D

Funkymonkey I have been sprinting in Victoria on and off for about 7 years, and I have run with a few different clubs including MSCA, FFCC, HSVOC, Winton Sprint series and some others I can't recall, and I can honestly say you would be wasting your time and money running MSCA events. I'm not going to shit-can them in public, but please PM me if you want to know why I don't recommend running with them. As far as HSVOC, WRX club and FFCC, I have run events with all these clubs in my MkII Escort and had a great day, I seriously recommend you run with these guys before MSCA. I know there were a few Silvias/S200s running with the WRX guys so if you wanted to talk to people experienced at running a car similar to yours that's where I'd start.

interesting... Ash yeah I was thinking of starting out with the SAU/WRX track days, but wanted to make sure I didn't start chucking too much money into the S14 instead of the R32, cos the only reason I'd pick the former is because it's eligible for a more advantageous class if I did eventually get serious about it.

atm tho I think the more track days I get to, the better, regardless of car. no point for trying to plan years down the track.

i'm sure most people are quite used to seeing pink and brown an inch away from each other... you'll be fine

    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
    • There is a warning that "this thread is super old" but they ignore that anyway...
    • With 10% Ethanol, we're talking 2-3% fuel consumption difference. The emissions reductions and octane boost in my opinion far outweigh this almost non existent loss.    My tanks sitting at 80%. Luckily that should go down fast as I'm on vacation again for the next two weeks.
