Hey,

As some of you may know i have pretty bad strut tower rust, now that my tax back money came in, it is now going in to ger fixed up, along with the hold under the battery for a intercooler, which is no longer there.

i've chucked it in with PJ Panels, here in Victoria Keysborough. who has 35yrs under his belt in the business, and nothing but good work i hear coming out of his shop.

anywho, thought i'd just start this thread now as just got back from leaving the car with him and i have some Before photo's.

the photo's you will see are just of the struts, and a little patch near the ABS system, where some sort of glue was put on for some reason.

the strut with the big line of rust is the passenger side, and the other with to big holes is the drivers side. and everyone know's what a intercooler hole looks like, not pretty.

i might even be able to get some 'in the process' photo's during the week.

yeah mine started of really small, and it just went a bit stupid.

$180 ? is he just going to bog it ? or actually replace with metal ?

cause when i took mine done there he started picking at it, and notice someone has tried to fix it in the past with bog, either over in Japan, or 1st owner here.

Micah, any sign of it coming back ? what they do to fix yours ? was it just the plate or the actual tower underneath ?

We had a fair old dig at it and it seems to be just the top skin/layer lifting up off the actual tower. No bog being used, he seems to think only a small job

ah yeah sweet, has a feeling they weren't sealed properly. hope your right *fingers crossed*

same here only the top skin: had the rust filed out, then treated for a couple of weeks. Following this, had a couple of new spot welds (I think), then a splash of paint... It was done a few months ago now, but no sign of any issues again: I do keep an eye on it now, though...

bit of an update, it took longer then expected.

went and saw the car today, all finished and looks bloody nice! almost like its never been touched. when i grab it tomorrow i'll take a few pic's, and hopefully he still has the photo's off the repair in stages.

stay tuned!

these pics are from when everything was cut away and the new plates put in. (wont be receiving the other pics till the weekend)

you will notice and bit of surface rust on the car in various places. thats for another mission if i get obsessive with it :P

i would say, it looks brand new ? very bloody happy with his work !

i huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders knowing my cooler hole is patched up and strut tower rust is fixed :P

TJ

If you are have had that much rust up the front end have you had a good look at your rear end.

I was under mine last night, removing the exhaust. The rear cradle and the underside of the wheel well are fairly rusty and need work.

I started searching last night for a rear cradle replacement and found a pic of someones craddle had actually broke where one of the suspension arms fix. Scary, esp if this happens of the highway or on a tight mountain road.

yeah i check it out real good when it was one the hoist.

didn't look at the cradle that good. but my panel beater told me when i got spare time and some spare cash, it would pay to get the whole underside of the car sprayed with Fish oil. stop rust getting any worse then what it is.

but yeah didnt notice any rust under the car, just your normal brown tinge metal, not orange rust shit!.

next mission. door mirrors !

Very nice job TJ,the stag came up very nice very clean and professional job ...no wonder why you want a cleaner engine bay :) (btw thank for the chance to get more pics of the guts of the stag...did you remove your hpi fmic?)

haha no probs freddy.

yeah swaped the HPI FMIC for a Trust return-flow FMIC. its painted radiator black already, and the rows run up and down like a radiator. so a bit more stealthy. just waiting for funds to get the new front bar then this shit can start to happen :rofl2:

    • I've heard the Tomei USA head gaskets are decent if you want to o-ring the heads but otherwise not recommended.
    • The 296mm rotors are the R33 turbo brakes. The 310mm rotors are the R34 turbo brakes. The calipers are nearly the same, but not. They're the same caliper but the R34 caliper has longer legs so that it sits out far enough to go over the rotor. The pads are the same for both. When you say, "I bough tsome EBC"....did you just mean pads? Or rotors? 310mm rotors fit under 17" wheels. There may be some wheels without enough clearance though. I can't fit my fingers between the barrel of my wheel and the "corners" of my R34 calipers, but there is plenty of room behind the spokes. This is on Enkei RPF1. You can fit 324mm rotors inside a 17" wheel, but I'd be willing to bet that it would be close to impossible with the Nissan/Sumitomo caliper (using an adapter, of course), because the Sumitomo caliper is fatter than the Brembo caliper that is supposed to go on the 324mm rotors.
    • Hi. Can someone tell me what brakes(and mainly WHERE) can i buy brakes on R34 GTT? I bought some EBC which SHOULD go on my car(i have GT but it has GTT brakes) but it does not fit, Brakes are "too" small(296mm) Are 310mm be good or? I have 17 inch wheel so no "big boys" but for me driving i just need one that fits and i can get here in EU/Czech.
    • Since winter isn't that harsh anymore in Poland, i will definetely drive it 365 days a year 😉. But if the snow hits i will try it for sure and let U know. Only swap i am planning to do is of course R34 GTR front 😍.
    • Hey. Very valuable information about pitwork, I will pay attention when buying any consumable parts 🙏 As for the carpets - I got a handful of information from nengun, from which it appears that indeed the carpets for the driver's side are OEM. They are not able to show me any pictures due to the long chain of different sales entities but after I place the order, as soon as the goods arrive at the nengun warehouse from which they will send the shipment to me they can send me photos and if my purchase differs from OEM I can immediately return it / cancel the purchase. I think I will give it a try 😉. Of course i'll let you know what's what as soon as i get them P.s. I know the topic is not relevant to the thread, but both nengun and amayama have these SICK 😍 trunk room lamps available. Do you know anyone who ordered them? I need to have one in my car
