What actually happened when you spun your bearing? High RPM range? Oil starvation? I'm scared to death one day my oil pressure will just drop off and spin a bearing haha. Over reacting I know but still.

How long untill you think your going to be out and about on the road? Standard rebuild? Feel free to PM me if you don't want this on the public forum :D.

And luke for the short term I hope its not rebuild time but a stroker will be awesome in the long term.

well, the part on the side of the block that you screw your oil filter to has these 2 metal balls at the end with springs on them to create oil pressure, the one that returns oil to the sump twisted and blocked off oil return. Combined with a fairly cold car (thick oil) managed to starve it and run the bearing for cylinder 6, but it had a bit of help - i also missed 3rd gear (gearbox was getting a bit fussy) but was also chatting away to people in the car not really paying attention 100% to the gear shift, if felt like it went in, but clearly didn't so it smashed into limiter on that change. =\

im hoping it's only going to be a week or 2 before i get my car back for run in (should be about 10 months off the road)... i considered stroker and rb30 bottom end but just did have the cash for them, so i went for a stock rebuild.

no probs... car was moving and in 2nd, went to change to 3rd but it didn't go into gear, i thought it was in gear and went to accelerate as normal... problem!! try it yourself if your game, drive in 2nd till your just starting to make boost (engine is under positive pressure), throw it into neutral and accelerate like your changing into 3rd and continuing to increase your speed - u might be shocked at how quick the car will fly threw the revs! and when u've got passangers your chatting to, that spit second of 'hey, whats happening here?' is disasterous!!

I do the same, I wait till oil temp is at least 70c before my intake manifold sees any positive pressure from the turbos

Guy across the road had a 4WD. Held it on redline one day (who knows why) for about 10 minutes in the driveway and then BOOOOOOM it literally sounded like a gun shot. Heaps of smoke pouring out and stuff... was crazy! Must had done some serious engine damage. Didn't see that 4WD after that ever again. But they used to love revving their cars. They warmed up their cars by revving it to redline each morning. They had a small Charade that used to fill the street with blue smoke when they took off. They also owned a 240z... well, it was 2 240z's welded together at the chassis. Then he had a crash. Then the insurance company found out. Then the cops found out. Wasn't good.

Didn't Writeoff spin a bearing after attempting a 7000rpm launch? Or was that someone else? I remember reading it on here.

I don't dare to take the car over 2800rpm while oil temp is under 70.

Fishpaste, did you notice a decrease in oil pressure when this happend? Or did you just hear the sound of the spun bearing clapping away? Usually when you spin a bearing, you basically lose all oil pressue...

my car wasen't that badly damaged from it, infact there were 2 sets of trafic lights inbetween where i think it happened and when we discovered something was wrong. there was no drop in oil pressure, tho thinking back, it felt like there was slight a drop in power. basically everything seemed fine, and it was when i was building up the revs to take off at the 2nd set of lights that we heard the knocking! i still limped the car around for a month and a bit after it had happened (had other work being done to the car) but when the damage was finally inspected the bearing had only slightly lifted, no visible marks on the crank tho it had hairline fractures and was 0.6 thou out of alignment from memory.

who knows if it would have happened with warm oil or not, also the oil was almost 5,000km old (i had just purchased 8l of motul 300v for a change - that i still have in my shed XD). But the core of the problem was that oil flow was serverly restricted and the car hit limiter. Perhaps i could have payed better atention and not bashed limiter but the fact remains that the oil flow was blocked and it would have happened sooner or later!

also, since my car i know of 1 other car that has lifted a bearing because the same genuine nissan part failed and blocked their oil flow (and it was a 34)! im not saying it's a common problem and hopefully no one else here will suffer from it ever, but it's another oil problem and not one most people know of!

well my car is back together after some reconstructive surgery and she seems to be doing ok. no noises, no smoke.

haven't done a compression test yet, ran out of time to take it to a workshop, but will do first thing tomorrow.

the little rb lives another day! (hopefully)

He did spin a bearing - not sure about the 7000 rpm part, but he did it during the middle of an SAU cruise - engine was well and truly warmed up by then.

i daresay its more to do with the engines getting 20 yrs old +

I've spent over $20k just fixing bits and pieces, making the car look and feel as new rather than going for the performance mods - I will be, no doubt about that, but I respect the fact that many people who have invested a lot of money into their engines have still blown them - which is why I've ordered N1's to replace my stock ceramics. The thought of those 20 yr old turbos is insurance enough for me to not over-rev or hammer it too hard - cant wait till I get my tax return, put it that way

Once I get those turbos replaced, some forged pistons, and a sump/head oil baffle and head return, wahey >:D

Well, good news, I'm back in for the day! Car checked out fine and got 4 more PSI wound into her. Should be fun fun fun on the day! You organised a meet point yet Adrian? Perhaps a Vilis breakfast beforehand?

havent worked out a meet spot.. the only thing about villis is ppl coming from the north will go to villis then back to mallala.. but if ppl want im keen for it..

    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.

    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
