I am looking at getting the Turbosmart dual boost controller, was just wondering is it possible to set the low boost at say about 3psi and the high boost at 8psi? would there be any damage done by setting the boost that low? I am thinking i might be able to save a bit of fuel when not driving hard. The engine is still stock with the stock turbo.

Thanks for your help

i got no turbo background... i just drive them lol.

but from what ive picked up in the past is when the car is just about to boost (middle line of the standard boost guage on the dash board), it is at atmosphere pressure eg, 0 PSI.

but i'm talking out of my ass lol, just what ive heard.

but i know when i had standard boost it would get up to 7psi, now i put boost tee in im up to 10psi, maybe 11 with spike. I know if you dont accelerate hard you can kkep it at low boost, but i dont understand what you mean by setting it at 3psi? just dont accelerate hard. A few times ive gone a couple of weeks without letting the turbo reah atmosphere pressure, (0 psi), why dont you just do that?

How can you save fuel? if you don't boost it then you will save anyway. Even if you do boost it but only half boost then its only 4psi.

At 100km/h your not on boost, at 120km/h your probably only on something like 10-20% boost so 1-2 psi if at all. If your banging it through the gears, then you'll hit boost all the time, but if you short shift you can avoid it.

Lowering your peak boost won't save much fuel at all. The only time lower boost is worth doing is on rainy greasy days, not as much wheel spin when the turbo comes on song.

A boost controller is a good thing, and necessary for upping the boost when your modding. Like most guys on here, I have one and use it for increased boost and boost control. if you have std turbo/s I wouldn't bother with one though.

If you have a list of mods done to your car [FMIC, Injectors, PFC, turbo upgrade, etc etc etc] then a good quality boost controller is a must. But your original question was can I save fule by winding it back, and we've answered that part only.

So if you are going to mod your car, then buying a boost controller is not a bad thing to do.

  • 2 weeks later...

theres allot of power to be made from the standard turbo still.... on standard psi i was at 166ish rwkw, only getting it to 10 psi i was up at 200ish rwkw, think it was 196.6rwkw or something like that. Yes it reduces the life of the turbo, but its been a year and no change in turbo sound or performance since it was boosted... so if your wanting to change the turbo anytime in the future, who cares if you wreck the standard one in the mean time.... just make sure you have enough money for the new turbo and/ or a tow truck lol.

i'll throw in a new stronger turbo once this one dies (if it dies)..... or high flow it, depending on what power i'm expected to gain from a high flow

    • Thanks, will do that.  Thankfully they still feel great.
    • Yeah man, absolutely. You can try pushing me all the way in swapping the R34 for an E9x M3
    • It's almost certainly going to be some amount of pads compound transfer onto the rotors. It will probably go away after you've run them for a bit. If not, pull it all out, lightly sand the rotors, scuff the pads, and rebed.
    • no one recommending speedtek gearsets?   i'm in the same boat as Cosline but rwd, I am holding boost back in third to 600nm at the hubs to save the gear as i make nearly 750nm at the hubs on a mainline
