i have the nismo R tune intake, which puts the pod right at the bottom where the cold air can get into it.

my worry is water lock. now i wont be driving through rivers, but puddles come up on the road and i cant do anything but drive through them. So whats the go with water lock. if 10ml of water gets in is the engine toast? or will the filter block out a fair bit and as long as i dont drive through massive deep puddles i should be ok. for reference, the pod is just above where the black grill/guards are on the front.

is it worth the risk? am i over reacting? do alot of cars have their intakes low and they have no worries?

Also, the R tune has a water lock bypass thingy, but as far as i can tell, it works if the pod is submersed and doesnt suck, it kind of opens up a to let air in and the water is therefore not sucked into the engine under extreme pressure.

What are your thoughts???

Go through a puddle then pull over and look to see if there is any splash around the pod.

If none then stress less :P

If there is water all around the pod freak out

And then make a splash guard.

i think if youre driving through deep water with enough RPM to suck water into the engine, then you dont deserve to own a car.

or you should buy a 4x4 like mine

then it doesn't matter what happens :(

if you have the R tune, then it should have come with a water bypass valve. if you drive through puddles that go past the bypass valve then its a clear indication that you are in a river and its time to climb out the window.

otherwise, get the bypass valve and stop stressing.

i have the bypass. i didnt put it on as it didnt make sence

What i dont understand is how it works

if the pod gets water on it will it suck through the pod?

or splashes dont worry it, and it fully submerged it'll get air through the bypass?

if the foam sucked the water out of the air i would understand but doesnt seem to work like that

Can anyone inform me?

it will open if it cant suck enough (any?) air through the pod

but for that to happen, you probably just crashed anyway and youre in someones backyard in their pool. but the rivers are nice this time of year

it goes on the theory that it requires a certain amount of suction power (think it's measured in cuft/in) to draw water from the filter. If the foam or bypass valve has a lower restriction rate, then if the pod gets submerged...it will suck air from the bypass.

Think of it was a straw with a small hole cut out closer to the mouth piece. If you suck hard on the straw...u will be drawing in air from the inlet. but if you submerge the inlet in a glass of water...then u find that you wont be sucking in any water as air is drawn from the hole

put simply, air follows the path of least restriction

would be fun if you had a white lotus esprit like james bond....or am i the only one old enough to remember that movie :(

or be an idiot like this guy>>!! i mean WTF>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDrlWy6IAdM

but im sure you wont do anything like that.

So we all agree that unless the pod goes under water, it should be safe enough to use the intake without the real risk of waterlock??

I wont drive into any deep water!!!

But alas i do want more music gear hahaha, so someone can buy the intake! please lol

use the bypass valve as a safety measure since you already have it. But since we're nearing summer...its not an immediate problem

pics of the actual CAI will give potential buyers more confidence in the product that they will receive. Links to resellers ads arn't really that helpful....my 2 cents worth :(

What is wrong with that?

Where are the air intakes on the mid engine NSX? Certainly not in the bow wave he is creating.... so I guess the only issue may be water getting into the cabin if the seals are stuffed or water getting in the exhaust if he wasn't going quick enough.

Having said that, if I did have an NSX, I certainly would not be doing that.

    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
    • Ok, disregard my “rate them” comment, sorry for my unrealistic input
