so... it was march last year that i got my new 260 into adelaide...

didnt have time to do the 100k service myself... so took it to one of adelaides most respected import service workshop

litteraly pulling up in my drive way after picking it up the water pump snapped

the new owner of the car just called me and told me that for 2 weeks there was a WES (work experience slave) working there... just so happened to work on my rig...

they paid for towing and fixed it the day later, the fan bolts we finger tight...... my radiator and support was never 100% again etc etc

just thaught i would see if anyone had seen this b4...

and maybe choose wiser who you take your pride and joy

yes i should have done it my self but still.!

Mate thats terrible i always worry when i take my car somewhere even though i have a good mechanic i trust i still end up doing it myself because of stories like these. i suppose its lucky there was no more damage done.

there's 2 sides to every story

i know for a fact **** asks customers if they want to replace there pump obviously its cheaper if you don't

so how do we know you told him just leave it to save yourself $100

in all the jobs iv'e had done there been happy all the time even when a brake line split that was his fault he was only to happy to get it fixed at his expense

this is gonna get closed! fast!

As far as I'm concerned, everyone has some horror story to tell about another workshop. Its a case of roll the dice and take your chances.

Every workshop in Adelaide has a horror story told about it.

Each time I took my R to that place, I received perfect service both mechanically and customer-wise.

Since they have moved to a alternate location, I'm forced to move mechanics, as it's no longer viable for me to take my car such a distance to get it looked at.

But yes, I've also had apprentice's and work experience kids work on my cars and have had mixed results. I've even seen for myself what some of them do to customer cars, and it's complete bullshit. From tyre changers limiter-bashing your car while it's standing still to others spinning the wheels and redlining it when they're meant to take the car for a drive around the block. It's bullshit that they let these 'kids' work on our cars, but these 'kids' have to start out somewhere.

You're not born a import mechanic. If you don't want them working on your car, do the work yourself.

Edit: I'd remove the refference to the name of the workshop and people can request PM's if they'd like the name. This IS a public forum, after all.

Edited by CRoNic...

i am always careful as to who is working on my car.....and i make sure that i am there, if it means taking a day off i am more then happy to sit and wait and see as to what is actually getting done to my car...never had a problem before at any workshop....but i know that sometimes you just cant take days off and you have to rely on the workshop not to limiter bash your car in neutral etc etc

better luck next time around adam....

OK so they had a work experience person work on your car - he made a mistake. The workshop then paid to have your car towed, corrected their error of the water pump, fan bolts etc, and gave the car back to you all without additional charge?

Sorry but that is excellent service as far as I'm concerned. They may have tried to wipe their hands of it, but corrected it the very next day. I have experience MUCH worse from other workshops so I don't see the need for the criticism

That's why my car has never been to a mechanical workshop, can't trust no one and no one would care about ur car as much as u do.

Bad luck man.

I agree with Luke,, I dont leave my car for 2 sec if It goes in for work under warranty... dont trust anyone even so called decent shops have some shonky cats working there. I dont even let them drive it into the garage ,,lol

and yes I have seen that issue on RB engines, there is a simple trick to tighten the bolts on the fan,and if the belt was too tight it would kill the weakest link in the pulley system

sux mate

Well stated there Hotwire......most workshops would just say its not their problem and brush you aside where as this certain workshop did what they could to correct their mistake

Yeah I am not sure why you feel you need to bag this workshop when 1). As pointed out they rectified the error immediately at their cost, and 2). You know that a work experience kid worked on your car and it was a one-off bad luck thing.

Then it could also be argued that a workshop should have someone qualified/experienced work alongside the work experience slave or in the very least have their work checked and then double checked by the qualified/experienced mechanic before the car returned to the customer.

Guessing that would be for the workshop or organize that not the customer....in this particular instance either they overlooked this or didnt check it as they are pretty flat out throughout the year.....i know for when i had to book my tuning in, I had to wait for at least 3 weeks

So it was all fixed then at their cost?

This is like ***** Motors in Sydney when I bought my Stagea. Flew in, picked up car, got into the city for a lunch stop, and the starter motor died. The owner, Alex, paid for my car to be towed 45mins back to his shop, new starter motor fitted at his cost, and loaned me another Stagea and gave me and Tracy hints on where to go to kill an hour while we wait. Thats service! :(

Yes that's what I meant Krishy :( . The workshop have the responsibility to do exactly what they're being paid to do, regardless of how busy they are or how many 'WES's' they have onsite.

If they're too busy to do jobs properly then they shouldn't be taking on the bookings as far as I'm concerned.

Given the reputation that this work shop has I dare say this is a one off mistake they won't allow to happen again.

As has already been said at least they fixed it at no cost, can't complain too much in that case.

Just to clarify a point, Adam hasn't named the workshop, I think it was Steve who summized the origin of the work.

He did however pay kudos by pointing out their rectification of the whole ordeal......many peeps would've left this important detail out.

In the quote above, he's asking whether anyone else has had a similar experience and regardless of the final outcome, is still having issues with radiator supports, etc.

If this thread is locked, it'll be due to certain responses to the author's 1st post.

I'm editing certain posts as you read this.

Its funny the SAME workshop also scratched his 1 day old freshly painted front bar

and

dented his two week old custom plates....

At the same time of this incident.

And in reply to your post madaz, No he didnt tell them to leave the water pump. its even on the invoice to install a new one.

    • Apologies for the long post, but needed somewhere to lay out the entire timeline of events and actions taken:   I've got an 89 GTR with a R34 RB in it. It's been running great all year, driven probably 500KM in the last month. It's not my daily driver, just a weekend fun car.    Build info: R34 RB26 - HKS 2.7 stroker kit, HKS adjustable cam gears, HKS turbo upgrades, Trust intercooler, R34 factory DENSO 440cc injectors, JUN chipped/tuned R32 ECU. All of this work was performed in Japan back in 2019.    Thursday 10/2/25 - It's a nice day and decided I'll drive it to work, I start it up in the garage and I notice it took a few extra cranks and sounded a bit funny. I figure maybe it was just because it was a pretty chilly morning. I pull it out into the driveway to warm up a bit before leaving. As I leave the driveway, it feels very off and sounds like a misfire. I pull it back in the garage to deal with after work and take the daily to work. I was able to diagnose it as a cylinder 5 misfire with the old spark plug test (unplugging each plug until a sound change with the engine running). I take off the whole ignition system, ignitor, plugs, spark. *Important note, it is still on the R32 ignition system with the separate ignitor system. I test each system with a multi-meter and nothing presents as a smoking gun. I put it all back together and it starts up no issue. I go ahead and order the PRP R35 ignition conversion kit. It should arrive today (10/13/25)   Friday 10/3/25 - Another nice day, car starts up great and drives great all day. Very pleased that everything seems to be OK   Sunday 10/5/25 - Decided I'll take it to play some golf, load up and drive to the course about 25 minutes away. Drives wonderful the whole way there, I pull in the parking lot and the engine completely comes to a stop. I do not recall if it sputtered at all, but just remember all of the sudden the engine was off. I roll it into a parking spot, try to crank it back on and nothing.  It'll crank and crank and not even try to start. End up getting it towed back to my house and push it up into the garage.    Items I have checked: Fuel in the tank Fuel Pump relay Fuel pump fuse  Spark Plugs & gap Coil packs Ignitor    I know the cylinders are getting fuel as the plugs smell like fuel after a start attempt. I tried spraying starter fluid into the manifold and cranking and not even a sputter.    I decided to do the live CAS test (removing the the CAS, ignition on and spinning the CAS stalk to see if the injectors pulse and spark is active). All of the injectors were pulsing and I have spark at the plug. The half-moon end of the CAS did seem very loose, I'm not sure how much play is supposed to be there, but it was more than I expected. There was no in/out play of the shaft, just the tip end that is pinned on had quite a bit of play.    CAS Play video   When I put the CAS back in, I stupidly did not re-time the engine. I know I need to do that tonight, however, I do not think it will start given it seemingly was not the issue. My plan is to do the PRP R35 coil kit and retime the engine at the same time.    I plan on ordering the Haltech Nexus Plug-in ECU once they are available again, but ideally would like to get this sorted before firing the parts cannon at it and potentially adding more variables.    Anything glaring that I am missing here, I'm a bit at a loss?
    • Get it on a dyno. Get something logging Consult. Run it up and find out what is causing it.
