Iv been driving my 35 for around 8months now on my green P plate. got pulled over for the first time on thursday and only got in trouble for my bonnet. he spent about 15minutes checking over my car for faults and another 5 or 10 under my bonnet looking for a turbo lol. i know a P plater cannot have a car that produces more than 200kw but im not 100% sure if thats "At The Wheels" or "At The Engine" can anyone clear that up for me??

In NSW your car is not illegal if it has 200kw+. Its judged on if its on the RTA prohibited list. The lotus elise is not banned but can munch on a shit load of turbo cars that are banned for P platers. In NSW the 350gt is illegal but not many cops know because their database does not recognise it. When a cop puts your rego into their database the 350gt is not on any banned list so it is not flagged. The 350gt is just listed on the rta website as a variant of the 350z. IMO its just bad communication between the RTA & the cops which works out for us. =D

PS: the RTA banned list has not been updated since 2007 (thats for high powered V6's, not sure about the turbo list)

I didn't know that.

how do you know that the cop's database will not recognise it? do you know someone in the police force?

just asking cos I waited for years to get my hands on a V35 when I was a P plater...

I had a friend who was on P plates driving a 350gt, he got his full license in Feb 2011. On boxing day and on a random occasion in Janurary he was pulled over by cops for breath testing. I was with him an both times, they took his license back to the car and what they did then i do not know but i assume they popped the rego and his license details into their database. Twice after giving a 0 reading on the breath tests they told us to have a nice day and we were on our way.

BUT!!! i know of someone who was driving in the western suburbs of Sydney and was pulled over by a h/w patrol. He got the fine and loss of 7 points. So from my personal experience I can tell you that unless the cop knows the car is illegal then you are likely not going to get pulled over.

cool, thanks for the info :)

must say though h/w patrol = public enemy number 1 !!!

The 350gt was placed on the list in May 2010. But lots of poo poo have no clue what our car even is. jst remove the skyline badge till you get your full license.

I checked that page in feb this year, the part involving imports and the 350 was not there it just stated 350z, but when it comes down to it, a 350GT is not a 350z, it is heavier and has less power stock as it is not tuned the same. If you look at a nissan maxima 2003 + they are around the same weight and KW output from the engine as its the same dam engine. its a total joke this car should not be on the list, if they add it they are going to have to start looking at doing it to xr6 falcons and some holdens to i mean srsly its just stero type bullshit done by the government.

Check again.

Grey import like v35 coupe and sedan same engine with same power out put 206kw as 350z.

Nissan Maxima is not the same.

It's all about power to wieght.

T4NK i guarantee you that the car has been on the list since May 2010. Ive done so much research and read almost every thread on every forum relating to this subject. The reason it was most likely put on the list was due to people on the their P plates who owned 350z complained that they cant drive their 350z so why is the 350gt available??

I know id be pissed if i was a P plater in a 350z and its illegal and then Joe Blow from down the road buys an almost identical car to me and is allowed to drive it.

The reason falcons and commodores V6 range will not be placed on the banned list EVER!!!, is due to "protectionism" in Australia over its car industry. Also they are 4 doors and ours are coupes so 350gt's are considered sports cars.

Just dont run into highway patrol, stick to driving in the day and avoid the western suburbs. That is for Sydney, other cities im not sure how your cops patrol.

If you want to play a trick, even the RTA people do not know its illegal. Call the RTA and ask if a v6 skyline is illegal for P platers, the majority will say no. Its not on the list.

    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
