does anyone know if i can install a second intercooler on the drivers side of the car ?

i looks like there is room for it but figured if its been done someone here would know about it.

if it can be done can you please direct me to a link explaining

It does look pretty awesome, but the extra piping will probably cause delay in the air being rushed into the intake manifold.

I cant vouch for it, but theoretically speaking the air has more room and more distance to travel. It *could* cause delay. Due to the extra room in there, it *could* cause a drop in pressure as it will take more air to fill the chambers. Don't take what I say as facts, I'm not sure. Someone correct me.

OK when you say delay are you talking off the line drag racing delay (where .5 of a second counts)

because for cooler air i dont mind the slight delay if the end result is more power or punch if you know what i mean , i dont drag the thing its just fun to give it a squirt and i dont want a front mount , after all there is already an oil cooler and a radiator there so i figure use the available vacant space.

it would be good to hear if someones done it and verify what your saying ,

Well lets look at it like this, its a common practice to have two sidemounts. It wouldn't be done if there were no benefits. All benefits come with their losses. Bigger exhaust, less back pressure. Pod filter, heat intake. Bigger turbo, turbo lag etc.

But the gains are there. What I mean by delay, is the air has a longer distance to travel through all the intercooler piping before it gets to the piston housing. I don't think it would cause any performance issue once the air is fed through, but again I'm not too sure.

so the other thing is if i were to do it could i use one off the left of another car and just flip it to fit the other side ?

You are going to have to consider the piping behind the bar. The water bottle for windscreen wipers and coolant are right behind the front RHS of the car. You could use another R34 sidemount and flip it so it mirrors the other intercooler.

You might have to use aftermarket cores (like the two above) if you intend to use two coolers.... If you run much more air volume than stock you will probably find a nasty flow restriction using two factory cores.... if your running stock boost (or close to it) with your stock turbo you should be allright.

You'll have to vent both coolers (air feed AND exit) well to give them any chance... maybe consider a water spray or thermo fans as well.

If you go with a foward facing plenum, it will reduce the overall length of the pipe work quite alot with this style set up.

If you do go with two cores, tap a boost guage into the charge pipe just after the turbo and one just before the throttle body... if you have more than 3/4 psi difference, it's to much or a restriction.

I'm not saying dont do it, but even if two cores arn't a flow restriction, they won't be as efficient and will heatsoak quicker compared to a larger fmic.

More effort, more cost (if you don't do the fabrication yourself) for less result???

Doesn't look like that much extra piping. Especially when you consider some of the other alternatives like a turnflow frontmount on an RB20 or 25. Plenty of piping there.

At a guess it would at least be an extra 30cm, perhaps more because remember you still have to go back to the factory plenum and so on.

So going from turbo --> cooler --> across car --> cooler --> back across car --> upto plenum

Im going to take a guess as he is Melb, he is trying to avoid defects... so plenums and things will not really aid the situation.

If i'm right, the smarter way would just be a returnflow FMIC, stock airbox, problems all solved without much hassle.

For the ultimate stealth cooling... just install some 1000cc methanol injectors and pump straight methanol into it ha ha ha.... no coolers required!

Not exactily practical.... but stealthy.

lol yeah im in melbourne and wanna avoid the defects, cops here see so much and an led light and they will pull you over to give the car a once over.

see what i dont understand about the front mount wouldnt it be less affective as the air is heated twice before it hits the radiator (inter cooler then oil cooler then radiator) thats what i want to avoid you know it great to give more power but woulnt it make the car run hotter or has this already been explained before ?

Front mounts work better in stop start traffic due to the airflow provided by the engine fan. To make side mounts cool well in traffic you would need to install thermos on them which sucks more power than you gain I would guess.

Heat soak may be confined to one intercooler which could help too.

well as i said im very new to it all and im sure youv all had this question a million times ,

i guess ill look around to getting a front mount some time in the future, iv got to change my front bumper first (i have a series 2) will a front mount hide nicely in a series 1 bumper or do i have to go a nismo bumper or something?

Ok so it's as i thought, legalities...

Just put a RETURN FLOW FMIC on... one that uses factory piping etc.

Stick to the factory airbox, then you are 100% legal in that regard with only one intake modification.

    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve. 
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
