Test Drove / Thinking Of Buying RX8

Recommended Posts

I reckon hte RX8 is a bit girly, don't think i'd ever want to own one. With some kits coming out they can look more neato though. 350Z is like the "guy" version, and the rx8 is like the "Chick" car. The amount of addons for the 350Z is becoming quite large, but i guess if its new you're not gonna modify it too much, if at all.

Rx8 is also heavily US influenced, the big flared guards, everything over the top, the throw-back to hotrods - seems can't escape it these days no matter what you buy, they're heading "US style". It sucks, japanese had nice design, why go to shitty US stylez??

Because when she bought the sp20 she paid for it herself, now she is bored with it so she wants me to go halves on a rx8 with her coz i really like the rx8 also and would drive it when the petrol costs on the line start to get to pricey driving to and from work

Well at least she aqcuired some real taste. I think any g/f of a skyline owner ends up liking the taste of a proper car  But petrolwise, are you going to save that much in a RX8 ? with 200kw and being a rotary, they're hardly going to be "light" on the fuel.

anyway - yet another "should i buy this, should i do that" from people. Can't ppl make up their own mind without consulting a forum??

i heard rx8s do a flat 14 1/4 mile, fair bit of room for improvemnt and u wouldnt hav to turbo it to get power(bridgeport, filter, exhaust, etc) NA rotories can reach well ova 250RWKW. not a bad car but really needs a viscious kit on it, killer stock mags though(18inch).

I think the RX8's are hot. And the convenience of 4 doors/4 seats over a 2 seater cannot be understated if 2 people are going to share a car. Me and the Mrs recently bought the "family" car (Honda Euro) which she drives daily but I drive if Im in it with her. Its been great.

I was thinking by mid this year my boss is due to update my company car and was thinking either RX8 or EVO8 (if it gets here by then) sound like good updates.

Its not gonna happen tho. :(

As i said before the 350Z was designed and built in the US, so its styling is all US, the rx8 isent!

How da fark can u call the rx8 a girly car??? nothing on the inside or outside reflects anything girlie. Maybe u just aint man enough to own one?? :(

I've driven both the RX8 & 350Z.

Things I disliked,

350Z..I agree the 350 wears you out, it's cramped & the being 6ft~ I felt like my head was holdinh up the roof. Luggage space..??none.

RX8..Only 1 thing I "HATED" was the engine, god was it a heartless wonder. There's about as much torque as a silent lamd. typically rotar. Unless your the type that likes to drive around town sitting on 6000rpm + then you'll love it. But really it's gutless.

In a perfect world the RX8 would have come with the 350Z motor. But if space is an issue the RX8 wins hands down, if drive is an issue the 350Z is like the Coalition hunting down Saddam Hussein in his bunker. "suddenly the RX doesn't look so nice"

EDIT: "Go halves with the misses???" I dont know your relatonship, but if she's your fiance', wife, girlfriend etc.. doesn't it all come out the one account?? INASNT dont be a tight@ss just suprise her & pay for it out of your $70K p/a job.

I agree u need to keep the rx8 high in the rpm to stay in the meaty area. It could really use a pair of small turbos then it would be a really sick car.

she is gfriend at the moment, and i am still paying my car off and buying a bunch of stuff for the new house so i donmt want to get stuck into paying off a 70k car off myself as well as my car and other expenses.

so its styling is all US, the rx8 isent!

bullshit! did u read what i was saying..it may not have been "designed' in the US, but i think it has definite US styling and undertones. cars in general are getting more and more towards US styling. Stop and look at one for a bit, how much does it remind you of a really old-school US "muscle" car? All rounded, features over the top, chrome edgings, etc. And guess where most RX8 will be sold.. it won't be Australia, and europe won't be its biggest market.

rx8 sounds like it drives like a honda.. all noise and no go..

any yup, its girly.. its all curves - it looks like an Mx5 on steriods!

That grill is a trademark mazda feature dating back to the 70's line up. If you look at the last generation of rx7 you'll see that it too has that type of grill. As for no low down power, just add a small turbo to it and run it on low boost, should spool up quickly and give the car some much needed low down power :(

Good choice denham...

I share a bmw with my old man, and he sometimes uses it when he's in qld (works in sydney during the week) I mainly use it now and then for work. the only hassles is insurance and sharing some of the costs. It works pretty well but it gives me the shits when i need it and cant use it.

ps :usuck:

I read the lead and thought...'yep just a misspelling and he's looking at an XR8....yuck' then I thought 'maybe meant an XR6 turbo, lotta potential having seen the power output on the APS upgrade, 320rwkw for about 9 grand' but really???? An RX8....pfffft!!!

When people start concentrating on great handling that just means its engine stinks.

Then I read this and having had a bit to do with rotaries, yeah you can do it, with a PP and idling at 2500-3500 rpm.

do u not understand that i will still have my 300rwkw line so i couldnt give a shit if mario decides to race me at the light in his fuly sick vl turbo if i was in the rx8. I would just laugh at him and take of slowly

I know what you're saying, but at that price, if you want class, you don't buy mazda. The rotary thing is just novelty and they overdo it a bit.

Thought of convertibles? Maybe a Bimmer or a second hand CLK

then you got some class cred

    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
    • So, a bit of a side trip, but one that might be interesting for people with JDM cars and japanese head units. I know @Pac previously posted about a carplay/android auto adapter he installed which used the AUX input, and @V35_Paul put in one of the Tesla style units that replace both screens. The option I went with was a Lsait LLT-YF-VER5.87_2 (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Lsailt-8GB-Android-Multimedia-Interface-for_1601187633672.html). Price was $1,150 for a single unit although they are much cheaper if you are willing to buy 2....$857ea. Make you you get the version 2 not version 1, it is faster and has a better UI - this is the manufacturer listing: http://www.lsailt.com/product/348.html. BTW if you've never bought from Alibaba before, don't be concerned....these guys can't stay in business unless they are responsive, ship fast etc, they were excellent (probably faster shipping than most local places) So, this was my task for a lazy Sat afternoon....looks complex but was all done in a few hours (it probably helps that I had some of it apart before so it was a bit familiar). I also decided to add a HD USB drive recorded at the same time and the unit also supports an aftermarket reverse cam (if you don't want to retain factory) and also AV in and HDMI out It looks much worse than it is, in fact in was genuinely all plug and play (no custom wiring at all). This video was pretty good (skipped a few steps), unfortunately they are an Aussie seller but no longer sell this unit (I guess Carplay/AA adapters are easier to install and much cheaper) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5hJfYOB8Dg
