Hey Guys,

Ive just replaced the front diff in my stagea engine to the gts4. I had a mate come round to do it who was a mechanic and i am just concerned about the yoke (part where the front shaft connects and spins the diff centre). It doesn't seem to be moving at all even with a few jolts with a wrench. The hubs spin when i turn them however the yoke doesn't, which tells me the spider gears are ok. Im thinking it just needs alot of pressure on it which is hard to do at the moment due to my car being on jack stands. Should it be ok to connect the front shaft to it and hopefully it will turn as it seems to be stuck?

Any thoughts guys? Cheers

posting on behalf of Mr.Massive

did he rebuild it or just replace it with a 2nd hand unit?

he replaced it with original front diff centre out of the gts4 (rb25de)

Did your mate also swap over the pinion gear?

this we're not sure of. this is potentially the gear causing no spin. I'm thinking that the mechanic may have presumed that this gear in question was an identical item

could this one be the problem?

Get someone to hold one wheel for you while you spin the other- if the diff is stuck then you won't be able to turn it

can give this a try

Another thing - did you also swap the rear diff. The car will have serious problems if the front and rear diff ratios don't match.

no. as per first quote, the front diff was replaced so it will match the rear

Did your mate also swap over the pinion gear?

just got confirmed this part was definitely changed.

would you guys think it'll be safe to bolt her all up and take it for a drive? ive got a feeling it just needs a bit of a good forced turn from the gearbox to come unstuck. Just dont want to break anything!

when i re-shimed to diff in my old silvia drift car, it was pritty stiff once all bolted back togethor, as i tightened the 4bolts that hold the centre in the housing i had to keep rotating the diff using the tailshaft flage and a socket on the bolt on the inside of it, but when it was all tight and full of oil it was still fairly stiff to turn, eg= u needed a tool to turn it, i bolted it in the car and went for a run up the street that put it back on the hoist and it free'd up,

so depending how hard it is the turn atm will matter if u drive it or not, can u turn it round with a tool?? or is it just fullly locked up?

    • Hi all, Long time since I've posted here. Looking for some advice on what I can remove to further identify the cause of my issues.  I can move the passenger seat forward and back but the knob used to adjust the seat angle is pretty much free spinning, there's very little resistance.  Removing the side cover I can see that the chain is intact but the shaft for the adjustment spins without the gear attached to it moving.  What's my next step for disassembly here? Is this a common fault? Just being a little cautious as I didn't want to start removing bolts for a spring to fly out or something equally as stupid.  Cheers
    • Those above shitboxes, mediocre and above usually have a turbo strapped to them, hence the slightly higher octane is required.

    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
