Hi smokem

He has assumed you are running stock turbo (and I am assuming you are using the factory ECU). It is mostly likely the ECU airflow cut you are experiencing. Aftermarket engine management or running lower boost (to reduce airflow) are the fixes.

It is harsh that people feel the need to call others idiots for not knowing everything but it is a frustration based on the lack of effort by people in searching through the forum for the answer first before starting another thread to answer the same tired old questions.

I hope there is some confirmation of what the issue was for the original poster when it is rectified or else this thread will have been for nothing.

Yes, my point is that without him saying he's running both aftermarket turbo and ECU, we can only assume he isn't. Therefor if the stock turbo survives running 15psi long enough, he'll be experiencing the ECU freaking from overboost (I think anything over 12psi with stock ECU makes it cry)

If he didn't have a semi-smartass response to the "being shot" comment, mentioning we didn't know anything about his engine it wouldnt matter...but maybe when he was typing it, he should have thought to tell us about his engine.

Either way, if you're running aftermarket gear, coils, plugs, or AFM

my response was not semi-smart arseish.... im not an idiot, i was trying to help out another user on this thread with similar problems to me.

the reason for not posting my engine details were cos its not my thread, the problem we are trying to fix here is of the original poster, not mine. i was offering personal experince in hope of helping him.

i use the search function excessively, when i cant find the exact answer to my question, i will post.

if it is ECU airflow cut, is there any reason it would be happening below 12psi?

thanks

OK.

yesterday I took the coils out and taped them up and the car ran great, revving to redline with only minor hesitation, for about 5 minutes until it started playing up again. Now it runs like crap and when i went to start it last night it wouldnt even idle properly for about 30 seconds then would only rev to about 3000 - 3500 rpm. 5 out of 6 coil packs had something rattling around inside them when i shook them? is that normal? Should I fork out the $400 for JJR coil packs or is there an alternative?

I think you just answered your own question

Yes is the simple answer

I would have factored in the cost of replacement coils when i bought my Skyline. Most are coming on to between 10 and 15 years old now so its about time regardless of mileage, sorry kilometers to think about changing them. There bound to have started to brake down from the heat at the very least.

Why was this not picked up on the test drive though??????

Other things that I replaced regardless when I bought mine were

Oil oil filter and spark plugs

AFM

02 Sensor

brake fluid and coolent

cam belt

and brake pads and disks

ALL of the above is the min and not really that expensive and really should be done anyway imo to give you peace of mind

If you think its expensive then maybe a Skyline is not the car for you.

Also cut out issues and rough running can also be coursed by a loom that runs under the the drivers side wheel arch plastic. The wires become corroded and split you might want to have a look at that too.

ok, today i got my yellow jacket coils and put them in, I also got a front mount and made sure everything was tightened up tight. It still breaks down????

Ive noticed it will run good when not warmed right up, or on long highway drives in cold night, So temperture is definetely causing it.

What else couldd it possibly be, i checked the plugs and they looked fine but could they possibly look alright but be the problem?

I cant understand why a stock r33 with new coils and front mount can stuff up like this?

Anyone got any other ideas?

You changed the coils without getting new plugs?

Personally considering this is the questioning area i would've got new everything, but each to there own i guess.

Get new plugs

could it be boost cut??

my car did it when I first got it, might wanna try a Fuel cut defender ( cheap as from any import wreckers)

band aid fix, and it probably wont fix your problem. Get the car properly tuned by remapping the ECU or a nistune. Fairly cheap and will see great results.

Do it once and do it properly.

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
