Hi guys. I need a second opinion on my GTR. When i start her and let idle to warm up, after about 5mins high pressure steam shoots from the engine bay. Its fkn lound like air from a compressor and i nearly shat my pants. So not to take chances i towed it to the workshop and let them suss what happen. The first few times they stared her up it happened again and then this recent start up nothing happened. They said the radiator did not need that much toping up maybe 1/2 liter and there was no obvious signs of coolant on the radiator etc. Apparently temp gauge was reading fine although the twin thermo fans went on. They need time to find out whats going on. But they stated that my oil pressure was way to high. The defi gauge was running almost to max. And when she reved the pressure increased and apparently its not meant to? Coz i run a JUN pump it has a adjustable vavle to prevent this. the oil pump needs to be taken off to inspect and adjust valve if needed. But aprrently this is trial and error as there is no info on jun pumps as to what adjustments equal pressure. Said it will be labour intensive as the sump needs to be taken off to acces the pump and the cradle, radiator, balancer needs to come off. It has thin run in oil for the bottom end which may effect oil pressure? I remember last time that the oil pressure was high at start up but came back down after she warmed up. Can i grab people opinions and advice as to whats happening?

well when cold the oil pressure is quite likely to be around 8bar. that's not really a problem and it will change a fair bit depending on what type (and weight) of oil is in there and also what the ambient temp is (colder it is higher it will go).

now, the real concern should be what the oil pressure is once the car is at operating temp (80 degrees C give or take 5 degrees). at those temps pressure should be around 2 bar at idle and will increase with revs. ideally it should go much higher than 8bar at max rpm when at operating temp as things can go bad with too much pressure.

these two problems may not be related at all. and if it's just a matter of seeing 8 bar pressure at cold start then that's not really a problem at all.

i would check the thermostat first to see if that's opening at all.. water shouldn't be boiling just from oil pressure being so high at start up.

make sure the water pump is still working as well.

I take it you meant to say it "shouldn't go much higher than 8bar at max rpm when at operating temp as things can go bad with too much pressure". I have seen similar issues when relief valves get stuff shut. I have seen up to 9.5Bar pressure dead cold with a slight rev to 2000rpm with this issue. consult your engine builder for what he expects the oil pressure should be - they all have different opinions.

    • @Haggerty this is your red flag. In MAP based ECU's the Manifold pressure X RPM calculation is how the engine knows it is actually...running/going through ANY load. You are confusing the term 'base map' with your base VE/Fuel table. When most people say 'base map' they mean the stock entire tune shipped with the ECU, hopefully aimed at a specific car/setup to use as a base for beginning to tune your specific car. Haltech has a lot of documentation (or at least they used to, I expect it to be better now). Read it voraciously.
    • I saw you mention this earlier and it raised a red flag, but I couldn't believe it was real. Yes, the vacuum signal should vary. It is the one and only load signal from the engine to the ECU, and it MUST vary. It is either not connected or is badly f**ked up in some way.
    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation. 
    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
