hi my name is greg i'm from albury, i have recently purchased a r33gtst series two from japan. i went to register/comply the vehicle and was told this cannot be registered due to being imported as a 'parts only' vehicle. has any one else come across this issue them selves?

Hi greg from albury... what a horrible horrible way to start your owning of a skyline.

it seems whoever your broker is / was has sold you a car that is "parts only" meaning - never to be road registered

you can do the following things with that car

sell it as a car to be parted out for wrecking

sell the car to a wrecker

crush the car and forget about the money you lost

use the car as a track only car - not road registered

wear the car as a hat

...sorry to sound like a prick, bro... but you have been diddled somewhere along the line if your broker or whoever said "this car is compliable"

man do i feel sorry for you if you didn't know that it was a parts only vehicle

this can mean the car has been crashed hard and repaired, or modified past point of compliance... - so you know what makes it "parts only"

EDIT: if you don't mind my asking - how much money has this project cost you thus far?

how much yen did you purchase it for in japan?

did you get the car inspected?

please do not mention names or companies in this thread without permission from moderator / administration staff - this can and will be messy if you do that

thanks for the advice. so far its been around 5,000aud all up the car is unmodified and has 51XXXkms I was advised against having the car inspected. ahwell these things happen might have to re shell it

vehicles are not eligible to be imported complete for "parts" or "restoration" purposes.

I'd like to help out, but would need to know exactly how the car ended up being landed in Australia as a complete vehicle. An import approval from DOTARS is ALWAYS required for a complete vehicle and as mentioned above, there is not provision for importing a vehicle for parts use.

The only two possibilities for this being a "parts only" car are that it was illegally imported without an approval, or an approval was granted and the vehicle failed to meet the standards required to gain compliance (either rusted out or damaged in some way rendering it uncompliable, this could be anything from poorly repaired damage to the parcel shelf being cut for a subwoofer)

Otherwise, without mentioning the names of any companies you've dealt with as it may contravene the site's rules, can you explain the following -

How did you purchase the vehicle? From Japan yourself, or locally?

Do you have an import approval for the vehicle?

Who told you it could not be registered/complied?

What was the reason given?

There's usually a very simple answer for scenarios such as these, I hope you haven't been stooged by someone!

sad part is - everything's pretty much been covered in these few posts... you CANT register it, you CANT comply it... you CANT re-shell it... and... that's all there really is to it!

The most important thing for me is how did you buy the vehicle?

If you had a broker source and purchase and you have evidence indicating that the car you instructed them to buy was to be road registered, you may have a legal avenue to follow.

There was the case of the Stagea that I'm sure everyone remembers where the owner, took legal action as the car that was imported was unable to be complied.

If though you sourced and purchased the car yourself, organised everything yourself then i think there's not much that can be done.

lol sorry to all you conspiracy theorists - I know absolutely nothing about the case, I just have the feeling that there is more to it than we currently know, but it's purely a hunch.

just to confirm what has been said in case you doubt it:

there is no such thing as a parts car. you cannot import a complete car for wrecking/parts. the only way is to have the car cut in half in japan and generally you cannot import a front and a rear from the same car at the same time (well not the complete shell).

as far as "re-shelling" the car. also completely illegal. I would strongly advise against that option.

as the guys above said someone is not telling you the 100% accurate story here. you should do some digging and find out what type of import approval it had to be imported here. and yes it 100% must have had one unless it was duct taped to the hull of a ship and then cut loose by scuba divers near a beach.

if you just want to wash your hands of the whole thing then your options are to break up the car for parts (most likely get close to your $5K), or sell it to someone who wants to build a 33 GTST race car. make sure you make it clear to anyone buying it that it cannot be complied or registered (providing that is actually the case here).

    • Thank you, 100% the intent. New coils were due and the 17" sixers look/feel loads better than the stock wheels. The aero options are so spot on.   Thanks for the warm welcome, all!
    • 98 r34 gtt Been rocking my latest setup and car running like never before. Have put a good 200 miles on it since all the latest changes and additions. everything is dialed in and have been driving it a bunch.   However, all a sudden last weekend as soon as I pushed throttle passed 4k and the engine stumbles, (slow or fast acceleration) hesitates and doesn’t go above 4100 or so, like a misfire. Everything else seems fine. I had a “good” set of coil packs that I removed from car when I first got it when I changed them over to new coils. I swapped out current ones for those, but no change. I also changed the plugs, no change. Seems to rev over 4 when out of gear with no load just fine no “misfire”, but as soon as its in gear with a load of any kind, it “misfires” as soon as rpm drop back below 4 k it runs perfectly, smooth, starts, restarts and drives fine as long as I keep it below 4 k while in gear. All readings look fine, no CEL   Any idea as to what could all a sudden cause an issue when pushing rpms passed 4 k?
    • When you say your cams are 272/262 is that 272in and 262ex?
    • We're arguing semantics. I am saying 45 accel and a 55 deccel ramp are "2 ways". Even a 45 degree ramp and an 89 degree ramp is "2 ways", because it is literally... two ways. The cusco 55/30 ramp is a 2 way. It's two ways. I get it though - in normal nomenclature a "2 way" would be 45/45 or 55/55 or 60/60 i.e the same locking in both directions. And something like 45/65 would be considered "1.5 way". I would then say if we're getting into the nitty gritty then every locking diff is a "2 way" diff and we should not speak in 1.5, or 2 ways but ramp angles instead. Which ofc if one of those ramp angles is 90deg, that side is not doing any locking. :p So Nismo don't obviously sell 3 things. The fact of the matter that they only sell two items really goes to show that there's a 2 way and a "1,5 way" which is really a 1 way. I believe the actual lockup for the 'adjustability' of the GT pro is really just setting preload for when the ramps actually start locking up. It's not changing how much 'wayness' there is. It is (somehow) horribly explained. People just buy whatever diff and go "locks up good bruh" and that's what ends up on socials forever.
