Hi all wouldnt mind a few other opinions on a turbo upgrade Ill be doing to my rb20.

atm its currently has:

stock internals.

fmic

walbro 255 pump

stock injectors

turbo back 3inch exhaust

33 trubo ( basically FUBAR, bent hose ).

z32 afm - yet to be installed.

hks shroom pod.

Basically weighing up between going for the hi flow or the low k's KKR. Ive heard alot of good and bad in regards to KKR's on rb20's, havent heard much on hi flowed 33 turbz.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

personally id choose the r33 hiflow turbo'd over a kkr turbo anyday, direct bolt up etc

kkr isn't the best choice, ive had a 480 before, made ok power, but was laggy and didnt really perform that well.. went garrett and never looked back

but hiflow > kkr anyday specially for rb20

From more professional perspective. The KKR430 is abit of a mismatched turbo. Mainly due to:

Restrictive turbine housing and Restrictive turbine wheel working with 6CYC engines.

Comp flow capacity > turbine flow capacity.

In result not only its laggy for the HP range it is in. It also creates high exhaust manifold pressure that has negative affects on the reliability and life time of the actual turbo.

Also with the KKR's turbine housings the A/R stamp or the A/R description doesn't seems to be accurate. As a proper .82 turbine housing out performed a supposedly .69 KKR turbine housing with both HP and response using identical CHRA.

Wither with high flows a experienced turbo builders can build a balanced package that maximizes its flowing capacity while still meeting user’s desired driving ability with lot longer life expectancy.

what power can you expect to get from a kkr430 at wheels on rb25 and kkr480 ?

I used to sale the KKR type of turbos back in 05 and 06, purchased from the same manufacture in China. I stopped doing that and developed my brand locally due to a lack of product reliability, support and performance. My judgment is only based from that period.

Well based on my Previous test the KKR430 maxed out on my fully built CA18det at 230rwkws. KKR480 with identical comp wheel and housing maxed out on the same engine at 261rwkws.

See what the problem is here. The comp wheel is too big for 430's turbine capacity while the KKR480 would be considered a more balanced setup.

How ever due to out dated wheel design the local engineered ATR28G4 has out performed the externally gated 480 in both response and power by extraordinary 55 rwkws (316rwkws)..

Dyno comparison:

Retired verion of TR44 (KKR480) on CA18det externally gated 24psi:

Current version of ATR28G4 on CA18det internally gated 24psi.

what power can you expect to get from a kkr430 at wheels on rb25 and kkr480 ?

kkr430 on stock rb25 with 14psi + tune + stock injectors n removed afm i seen 300rwhp fullboost around 4000rpm

kkr480 on stock rb25 with 19psi + tune + injectors removed afm i seen 340rwhp fullboost around 4800rpm

run 115mph with kkr480 turbo at willowbank.. still had a little bit of top end.

just my experiences with them

I guess you are not going to enjoy the lag from a simple turbo like kkr on an rb20, I think the 33 highflow is a better choice.

having said that, I run kkr480 on my rb30, it is perfect for what I need (cheap, spools very early, enough top end for the real world). Made 250awkw at 16psi before the standard injectors ran out of flow.

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.

    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
