Hey, this got me wondering the other day. Called up the tyre shop (Tyre Barn specifically) and asked about the choices on 225/40/18s for my Impreza. They replied with 2 choices: Silverstone Evol8s ($185 each) and Hero Milanza HZ1s ($150 each). I decided to go for the more expensive one as it sounded more legit (probably named after the racing track Silverstone too :)) and i've never heard of Hero at that time. Was getting tyres fitted and couldn't help but to go check out the Heros while waiting. These are the stats i got (forgot the treadwear but they were in the 400 mark):

Traction A Temperature A

Hero Milanza HZ1 (made in Taiwan) $150ea

So are these tyre readings rated by the manufacturer or as some Australian standard thing? Would i have been better off choosing Heros next time because of the ratings? Anybody with experience?

They are probably named because you need to be a hero to use them, or have huge kahooners :)

I'd say they probably belong on a taxi :P

If they have a treadwear rating of 400+ it's unlikely you'd ever need to replace the tyres....... you'll wrap your car round a tree long before you wear the tyres out :ermm:

Lol trust me it's 400 or 420 tread wear. The only ones with 200 were the normal car tyres (eg. Silverstone Kruzer1). Could this tyre brand be another underdog just like the BC Racing coilovers? (Both made in Taiwan, both very good pricing for performance...)

I'd imagine if it is going to be for a daily car and not driving it hard around corners it should suffice.

If it meets DOT specifications - the tyre is safe enough for general use.

Just don't expect it to perform if you are an "enthusiastic" driver, ride quality may suffer too.

400 treadwear indicates very hard compound, which translates to poor grip. a higher number its not a good thing.

even the cheap nankang ns2 have a treadwear rating of 340.

^^^This is actually not totally correct.

The treadwear rating on a tyre doesnt indicate how hard or soft the compound is or how much grip the tyre can provide. The only way to judge how well a tyre grips is to use it and judge for yourself.

There are many different factors that determine a tyre's outright grip, like: tread design, tread depth, casing construction, silica or non silica. The tread compound isn't the only thing that gives a tyre it's grip.

Treadwear ratings are also highly affected by the depth of tread on the tyre... For example if a manufacturer made 2 tyres with exactly the same tread compound, design and casing but one had 5mm of tread and the other had 7mm of tread you would have almost the same performance from both tyres but completely different treadwear ratings.

To answer the original question about Hero tyres - they are manufactured by Federal as their tier 2 tyre, they share a lot of similarities in design and construction with Federal tyres and are comparable quality.

I have personally driven an R32 GTST Skyline on Hero Milanza HZ1's and found them to be very good tyres for their price.

The moral of the story? - Don't judge a book by it's cover.

I use Hero Milanza HZ1 tires on my car.

FRONT- 235/45ZR17 97W XL

REAR- 245/40ZR17 92W

I've had them on the car for 20,000 km and there is still plenty of tread to last... actually the tread wear is still nowhere near the replacement marker.

I'm also pushing 250rwkw to which they hold traction fairly well. They're quite decent in the wet too, as long as I don't floor it...

Thinking of getting the Milanza HZ1s as daily drive and maybe some semi slicks for track use only :ninja:

EDIT: By the comparison of Hero Milanza HZ1 and Atlanta AR01, i might have gotten mixed up as the HZ1 is 260 tread wear and AR01 is 420 tread wear (both still road tyres).

I've had the Hero HZ1 on my XR6 turbo for about five months and have done about 6000 km. The tyres are excellent and to be honest, I haven't noticed any difference between them and the original Dunlops in either the wet or dry. Great value for money. Highly recommeded.

Old topic but i have used hero's quite a few times on the back of my car. Similar grip to 595ss. I ran them at 28psi hot and at that they lasted relitively well! Basically on par with all the sub 100 $ tyres imo!

But it just sounds sooo nasty :(

My mate got some replacement tires on a car he was selling awhile ago...po young lol - couldn't even grip his 1st or 2nd in a 180kw wrx (so 4wd!).

And yeah...with your user name, i thought you'd be rolling around in re55s etc!

From what people are saying, it sounds like these hero tires are decentish though

i've had Hero Hz-1's 235/ 40/ r18 Rears and 225/ 40/ R18 fronts on my r33 Si 4 door for over 6 months now and they are really good in the wet.

(I'm running HSD TT coilovers, however being that they are significantly softer ride than TIENS, as they are my base for comparison the tyres are fine.)

The HZ-1 are made by federal as they are a 595 copy.

In comparison to my brother who has 595 rs-r's on the front and 595's on the rear (of his r33 Sii 2 door) they are really twitchy in the wet. And his car is pretty much stock apart from Jap spec Teins.

Im using them on my daily, a commonwhore station wagon.

They work just fine and are not bad in the wet. I would not run them on my skyline but as a general use tyre nothing wrong with them

Thats a good point I have had federal 595 tyres on my car before and they were awesome. I was hoping to go back to them. But since I made a alloy wheel change they didnt come in the size I needed.

Personally 595 would have been a better choice

    • I thought I'd do a write up on an auto transmission fluid change for a the nissan 7 speed Automatic. At some stage the genius engineers decided that the fluid in the trans was "for the life of the transmission", (which seems kind of self supporting to me) and removed the dip stick and fill tube (funnily enough there is still a casting for it). Anyway, for this job you do need 2 specialist tools in addition to regular hand tools, jack and good chassis stands. You need a way to pump fluid up to the transmission; I got one of these but there are plenty of other options: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364584087070 Don't trust the generic listing though, it does not come with the required adapter for the Nissan 7 Speed.     • So I mentioned the apprentice, @LachyK helped take the bonnet off. We just undid the nuts on the hinges and unclipped the gas struts, then pulled the bonnet back a little as the front was catching on the front bar.  I had a good look at everything today and have removed the rams, repaired/reset the hinges and bolted it back together like it never happened. I'll do a separate write up on the repair, and I also removed the poppers from the Fuga today too to save grief down the road.....as said above it is at least $5k to repair retail. I'm also happier about my ability to prepare a race car, and less happy about Nis-nault's engineering (I can hear @GTSBoy sAfrican Americaning) because the top hose of the radiator didn't slip off.......it snapped clean off. By practice I put the hose clamp hard up against the flare on a neck to make it least likely to ever move (thanks @Neil!). I guess that puts a little more pressure on the end of the pipe as it is further away from the rad, but still, that is pretty shit. I've put it back on for now as there was a fair bit of neck still there, but obviously there is no lip on the neck any more so I don't think I'll track it again until I have a new rad. Speaking of which....more research required. It looks like Koyo makes a standard size radiator in ally which I'll grab in the meantime, but I really want something thicker so might have to go custom in the medium term (ouch) Coolant still needs a refill and I have the pressure tester on it over night, but other than a wash down of the engine bay it seems alright. And @MBS206 noted something noisy on the front of the engine and I think I agree....time for a new accessory belt and tensioners I think.
