I have attended two.

mercotts defencive driving- was a 18th bday present and was quite happy with that one. the speeds all the practical were done at were 40-60km/h

did the 2nd one when i got my own car (6 months after turning 18) with AAMI insurance as it was free.

didn't like it as the speeds were much lower 30-40km/h and didn't realy show what could happen.

awesome thanks man, i'll look into it.

i've driven a rb20det before i even had my L's

its got to do with the driver not the car, as a number of low power cars end up in stupid accidents ( stepping on gas instead of the brake etc)

i got impounded in a 30kw corolla, its got nothing to do with power unless it 300+ kw

this is true, its the same with bikes. how hard you plant the foot, turn the wrist etc. but some people are naturaly good, others are completely gumby and need practice. even a gumby person in the dry would probably be allright with an rb20 in the dry but in the wet? what about fugged tyres?

unfortunaetly the rules have to pander to the lowest common denominator

hah ha my mate got done in his grandmas pulsar overtaking 5 cars in a 90 zone doing 153kmph by a chopper. car impouned, licence lost for a week for every k he was going! and 1000's woth in fines. he needed to be off the road though, ive seen him with a cheeseburger and phone in one hand, coke and a smoke in the other, steering around a roundabout with his knees...

if you read the other post with keven krudd, he wonts to incresse the drinking age to 21.

I was in the USA last year for and altho i could drink alot of my mates were under 21 and couldn't however this did not stop them from attaning booz.

"The drinking rates of young teenagers is going through the roof, and hugely affecting their ability to, frankly, manoeuvre a car."

. .The Prime Minister said that young adults being legally able to drink and to drive from around the same age, is a factor in P-Plater deaths on the road.

“It’s alarming to see that some young drivers continue to underestimate the influence of alcohol consumption on their driving skills, with one in six (15 percent) believing it is okay for them to drive after a few drinks as long as they feel capable,” AAMI Corporate Affairs Manager Yves Noldus said.

Only read the first post. But I have to say:

There are a lot of "young" we call them chavs that think that when it rains for example its fun to go sideways.

WOOW my thoughts are tool of the week. drive the car properly u cock leave the sideways bit for the track

Yes, great you have a rear wheel drive car and you can go side ways and the point is???????

Just take a trip down the road and the amount of elevens's on the road is un real listen carefully and you can hear the chav in distance most nights too

To combat this the insurance companies could always charge the young or new drivers a stupid amount to insure anything over a 1.5lt car or truck like they do in England

we are talking $5k $6k a year to insure a 206 gti or Astra cope in the first year yeap thats how much it costs. You wanna pay less get a more insurance friendly car or wait till your older with more experience

Lowering the road toll is easy....just Ban ALL Commondoor and Falcons, and watch the road toll tumble :)

Yer, might have something to do with those cars making up like 1/4 the driving population though

This would be something for the RTA/Vicroads to look at with registration fees - can't see insurance companies banding together in the name of safety and knocking back clientele with exorbitant premiums...they already do something similar (although much cheaper than what you suggest) with age and vehicle specific excesses.

Yep already thought of that...those drivers are then forced to take public transport. As they have no taste in cars and should not be allowed to drive.

lol some people have to drive foulcans and bommodors to make us import owners look good

did anyone see that article by mark skaife on the sunday night program? he travelled over seas to germany, studied theyre roads system, theyre driver education system and new cars... he found that chiefly, what was lacking in australia is education of young drivers, followed by the roads they drive on and the cars they drive.

interesting points where:

in germany your parents arent alowed to teach you! you have to have professional lessons! this way your parents bad habitts arent being passed on

all young drivers must be able to pass an advanced driver training course before attaining a licence

government grants to buy new cars are helping put young people in newer cars

driver awareness and road law adherance in germany is orders of magnitude greater than here

and it was cool to see the vs calais pulled up a full ten metres later than the VE bommodore wagon

Yeah but then you would have hundreds more people getting murdered or seriously assaulted every year on public transport. Just let the Mofo's do their burnouts out in the industrial estates at 2am in the middle of no where, let the cops turn a blind eye as opposed to getting them to move along, often ending up on residential streets.

so why are we wasting time, money and resources on them rather than the 87% of the road users that cause 75% of total crashes?

surely you'd target the majority rather than the minority as that would result in a larger reduction in incidents, assuming the same resources are allocated to the majority and a similar effectiveness in reduction, it would mean that proportionally speaking we'd have less accidents on the road.

Oh yeah that's right, scapegoating is a wonderful thang. Forgot it was an election year.

I agree with u,

Yet I do belive after beng a P'plater couple of years ago,

To this day i wonder how im stll alive wth the stupid shit i used to do.

I think the NEW laws towards P'platers are good,

Only because 755 Of male P'plate drivers are "wreckless" I mean How in the hell do P'platers manage to flip a car onto its roof doing donuts in a local court? This is just rediculess.

Unfortunetly it does wreck it for the remaning P'plate drivers. but its for the best.

Then by the time ur fully licenced youll appreciate how cops seem to give u a little more slack so long as u arnt caught doing stupid shit.

I get pulled over all the time and my car is modfed. but cause im never doing stupid shit anymore or at least not where i may be caught they complement my car and let me go.

Its simple. be smart. grow up.

exactly! theres more cops hiding in empty factory area's after midnight waiting to impound ppl where as you have a better view of cops in the day time in a residential area.......

vicroads and victoria police, what a joke.

lol at the "tougher demerit points system" we only get 5 to begin with?

i lost my license for 3 months within a couple months of getting it.. and now its extended for an extra 9 :) (red P's)

and what did i do?

- 3 points + $243 fine for no seat belt

- 3 points + $243 fine because car was turbo

gee.. they saved a few lives don't you think, my seat belt or turbo might have killed somebody.. :)

Well the seatbelt one could have killed you...yes you do mean something to society and the people who have to scrape your brains off the road even if you don't care about yourself. It takes 5 seconds to put on the belt man :)

Sounds like you're having a wAAA :)

lol yeah well that's my bad luck i guess, first time i didn't put the belt on becuase of forgetting, as i was in a rush to get somewhere!

and yes the turbo is my fault as i new its not allowed, but hey not all cops are very err.. bright.. when it comes to staring at an engine bay :)

but honestly, no point carrying on about how harsh the laws are etc. as much as everybody complains, doubt there going to change anything, not going to change how or what i drive if i haven't done anything wrong. lol :)

    • I'm looking for some real world experiences/feed back from anyone who has personally ran a EFR7670 with a 1.05 exhaust housing or a .83 I'm leaning towards the .83 because its a street car used mostly for spirited driving in the canyons roads. I"m not looking for big numbers on paper. I want a responsive powerband that will be very linear to 8000 rpm. I dont mind if power remains somewhat flat but dont want power to drop off on top. The turbo I've purchased is a 1.05, although the mounting flange T3 vs T4 and internal vs external waste gates are different on both housings, I not concern about swapping parts or making fabrication mods to get what I want. Based on some of the research I've done with chat gpt, the 1.05 housing seems to be the way to go with slightly more lag and future proofing for more mods but recommends .83 for best response/street car setup. AI doesn't have the same emotions as real people driving a GTR so I think you guys will be able to give me better feed back 😀
    • Surely somebody has one in VIC. Have you asked at any shops?  Is this the yearly inspection or did you get a canary?
    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
