Missfire Boost@4500-5500 RPM - The Answer! (for me at least!)

Recommended Posts

just put in the iriway 7 spark plugs, still the same, im all out of ideas, i inspected the coilpacks so many times, no burn marks or melting or loose components etc.

any ideas people?

Can a blocked fuel filter result in the car missing/spluttering as described?

If it is totally blocked it could cause it to run very lean and misfire, it is fairly uncommon though.

I had my engine rebuilt for my 32 GTR a few years ago and after the run in I found I wasn't making full boost and was braking down. I found my stock IC plumbing was piping off and then re sealing (took me a while to find that one) then it ran good for a few years and then for a while I had a problem of it breaking down under boost, poping and farting, miss firing like a mofo!! I spent almost every few months changing spark plugs and checking AFM's IC piping. Then I decided to buy new coil packs. Oh man what a difference!!! Red-lining holding boost no worries now. Went with the splitfire. Best investment!

As always the trusty skylines community has helped resolve my missfire issue..

Symptom:

Got a service completed, engine bay cleaned and car started to develop a missfire under load through the rev range starting at 2,500 - 3,500 then 4,500 - 5,500.. Sounds like a machine gun popping..

Swapped out spark plugs which appeared to be quite old and coil pack completely failed when placed back.

Resolution:

Looked at a number of posts and ended up buying a set of 6 yellowjackets rather then splitfires from Performance Wise, arrived in 3 days - great service from Paul..

Put them in, car is performing as normal, no missfire!

Note: Car would idle fine and would be ok when gradually coming onto boost, only when wide open throttle and under load would it missfire..

That sounds exactly like my issue, but mine isnt that severe, just jerky when wide open trottle under load. I will try my mates coilpacks and hopefully that fixes the issue.

Cheers mate

Have a RB25DET with stock coilpacks. Always had a miss fire on idle even with copper or iridium plugs. Car made 291rwhp on stock turbo.

Then I got a GT3082, car makes a 351rwhp. But it has a horrendous missfire on full load, boost @18psi.

So I took my coilpacks out to silicone/tape them. And saw #6's coilpack and plug were burnt out. Thoughts?

Where is that coil plugged in?

Anyone tried these coil packs: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Performance-Coil-Packs-RB20-RB25-RB26-R32-R33-GTR-/110462393656

Chasing an intermittent miss and wouldn't mind ruling out the coil packs but $600 on the Spitfire ones seems like overkill (fairly stock R32 GT-R).

They look like Superspark knockoffs. Try yellow jackets: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YELLOW-JACKETS-COIL-PACKS-SKYLINE-R32-RB20DET-S1-R33-RB25DET-GTST-GTR-RB26DETT-/170868197763?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27c889c983

I bought mine off performance wise around 3.5 yrs ago and they are still going as strong as the day I installed them. Neva skipped a spark:)

You can also get them from their website for a little cheaper - http://performance-wise.com/userimages/procart28.htm

Why didn't I read this this morning? Had my coils out chasing a break down in ignition and found my plugs were gapped really badly. Also I don't think the plugs had ever been changed going by how tight all the bolts were including spark plugs.

My 34 was running around 13psi on standard everything but when reved hard would go "b b b b b b" does this sound like coil breakdown or miss firing? It's an auto and it's previously only ever done right before changing gear but was doing it all day Sunday.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into the Yellow Jackets (although trying the cheap ones is tempting).

missfiring, had the same issues, checked the coil, taped it, replaced sparkies, all good

dont forget to check the coil plugs

that sound just like the problem I've got with my r33 on closer look also found we were getting a voltage drop

at alternator replacing with RH9 hyper Alternator 130A have been told we could be putting to much load on

alternator with extra electronics, will try your fix for coils tho before ordering new coils

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
