CroatianDlite
Hi guys how much do new coil pack generally cost for R33s, and where is a good place to get them with not getting ripped off. Thanks i have this same prob. i am not mechanically handy.. as in i dont do work on my car unless its really simple. i dont think i could do all this removing on the coils. does anyone know where i can get this fixed? how much are new coils? The only problem I have is not owning the correct tools so I only took 1 out to see how it all works and then put it all back together again. I think a workshop could do the whole thing in 30mins. knore
Did this today while i had my plugs out to regap them, cant say i had a problem before but i did it anyway.. I ran the car on .95bar tonite on the highway and no problems all the way to redline, not a single miss, hesitation... nothing. I recently put Trust VSPL intercooler kit, AVCR and Trust Catch can on. I couldnt run over 8psi with the above setup, but after regapping plugs to 0.7 from 1.1 and taping the coil packs, it runs 13psi like a dream. I think this is something everyone should do, it has all benefits and no disadvantages. Oh, and cheers niteman I doubt anyone would of ever have figured this out, but u definately did stumble upon something good. Props to you! benm
Did you find any cracks or just tape them all up? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32356-missfire-boost4500-5500-rpm-the-answer-for-me-at-least/page/3/#findComment-912282 Share on other sites
knore
Well the funny thing is i did find a common crack on about 3 coil packs, the crack wasnt across it was down, about 1cm long on one of them But the thing is, Ive never had a problem with missing or anything anyway. So its weird, but i taped them up anyway. And can confidently say that it helped towards me boosting 0.95bar without a single problem, i dont use this boost all the time, i just did it to see how it goes, i now cruise on 10psi and its perfect I taped it pretty professionally too, if you tape around, then tape across you can use the different angles to hold each other on.. if you know what i mean. So in reality, its not a temporary fix because the coil isnt broken. SKYLINED
A silicone layer would be great insulator, but im not too sure on what heat it would handle. Revhead
I was quoted between $420 and $500 for a full set of six good condition, second hand coils, though I managed to find a full set for $300. Will whack them in tomorrow and experience full throttle goodness once again Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32356-missfire-boost4500-5500-rpm-the-answer-for-me-at-least/page/3/#findComment-913577 Share on other sites
knore
A silicone layer would be great insulator, but im not too sure on what heat it would handle. Well, a good idea would be to tape them, then smear a layer of silicon over the tape and let it dry for 24hrs Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32356-missfire-boost4500-5500-rpm-the-answer-for-me-at-least/page/3/#findComment-913604 Share on other sites
benm
Long story short; On saturday I taped all 6 coils and my miss is gone however it feels slightly 'flat' on 12psi from 4500rpm onwards although it's been a while since I last gave it a flogging on a 'working' 12psi so it may actually be back to normal. I never drive my car on 12psi except at the drags (which won't be happening for a while) so that will give me time to permanently fix the problem. I have a feeling its #1 + #4 that's causing me problems. The #1 coil looked like the only 1 that may have had a hair-line crack on it and #4 I taped up last and my car definitely drove better when it was taped compared to when it wasn't. What options are their for aftermarket coils and at what price? Revhead
Mine went really well for about 5 mins, then it ****ing started missing again. I was getting all excited too, it starting barking up at the top of second (which I haven't been able to do since the problem first started) and then I headed for the highway... by the time I got there, the problem was as bad as before. Damn. I'm investigating aftermarket coils too. Splitfires retail for $1095 iirc, but I've seen them advertised for $950, so with some more digging and haggling, you should be able to score a set for $800. Maybe. I'll be checking for leaks in the intake piping (already have but I'll go over it with a fine-tooth comb) and also for gaskets that are marginal etc. I'll also be doing things like making sure that the coils are earthed correctly, though I'm not sure that will work, given that it worked fine for a bit and then stopped working. I know that PC's don't work as well when they get hot (as in, up to operating temp, not melting point), are coils affected the same way? benm
Is it possible to run both standard + aftermarket coils? I mean at $1000 for new coils i'd rather grab some 2nd hand 1's for between $50ea to $200 a set and just deal with the problem again in another 50,000km than shell out $1000 just to be able to use 12psi for 2mins per month which is what I currently do. Zahos
if people are having problems with the tape coming off, why not try buying a tube from a push bike? Like a racer where the tires are very skinny, and then cutting small sections of it to cover the coil... Guest Slide
I have same prob but mine does it about a hundred times really quickly at anything over standard 7psi boost at least 10/20 pops per second its that fast and that often that as soon as i go over half a bar boost when set at 12psi it pops. i created a new thread moments before i stumbled onto this one here it is. Somebody help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have taken my R33 to a number of stupid so called specialists and they have all given me different answers which have cost me nearly $2000. On standard boost (7psi) it runs like new ,Anything over (i mean even 1 psi over) it pops not detonates. it sounds like it is backfiring. it looses boost and it sounds like it is just feeding it out the exhaust. verrrry embarassing. sound like it is farting. I am using a turbosmart dual stage boost controller (tried a different 1 already) 750hp fuel pump, ngk irridium plugs, fuel lines, injectors have been cleaned ,3'' turbo back exhaust, pod filter ect. I have tried tripping the computer did not fix. Help Help Help (eeeger to run more boooost) i feel like popeye without spinach http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...ead.php?t=47752 I havent tried taping yet will do but by the sound of it ,it only happens a couple of times maybe mine is different. i have tried 50000km worn coil packs and still no go Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32356-missfire-boost4500-5500-rpm-the-answer-for-me-at-least/page/3/#findComment-963082 Share on other sites

Buy/borrow a known working coil and replace it yourself, and if the problem isn't any better then get yourself a new tuner. Sounds like its overfueling. You have the same problem as i had, put a SAFC in and lean it off or if youve got plenty of $$$, get a Power Fc and get it tuned. That will fix it.
