Heya all,

Just looking for general opinions on a setup for an r33 my mate recently purchased e.g. it's not making enough power, it's running too high boost, i would change that etc. Basically what to do, what's right for the engine/setup e.g. wind boost down or leave, add more support stuff etc.

It's an r33 with a series 1 rb25det.

It's been rebuilt 65000 kms ago with new nissan parts like rings, rods, gaskets/hoses etc

It's got a boxed pod, z32 afm, gt2871r .86 housing, fmic, head ported, valve guides trimmed (what does this do lol?), tomei valve springs, tomei ex cam gear (retard 4), 3"dump/front, 3.5"exhaust + hfc, 0.050 o/s bore, alloy rad.

In terms of support stuff for power, there's a nismo fuel reg, apexi power fc + boost control, some FET coilpacks.

It runs high boost 1.25 setting on the pfc hand controller (is this 1.25bar?) and that was around 240kw according to previous owner. Lowest setting is 0.90 on pfc hand controller. The daily setting is 1.1.

Opinions & thoughts? Mate is looking for response and average power (i.e. curve) not peak warp speed type power.

The car currently seems to run very well and has pretty good response.

for cam lift, and/or head flow, what size are the sticks?

BTW I think the turbo is a bit small for what you want, 240 sounds about right otherwise.

Great thanks mate.

The cams are stock, just the exhaust cam is adjusted via the cam gear.

I think my mate is happy with the power, though if there's a better turbo that gives more mid range and better top end...well that's just win!

Is he able to adjust the boost via the pfc without a retune (i.e. do the boost settings all run on one tune/map or each boost setting has it's own correlating map?)

Any turbo you chose will make more power, but at the expense of midrange compared to what is on there now.

That's just how the world works.

~18-20psi/240rwkw from that turbo sounds about right, it won't be making anymore power than that.

Great thanks mate.

one fuel and ignition map, up the boost to the max it was tuned for, i wouldnt suggest going higher than it was tuned for. stick it on the 1.25bar setting and leave it there, nothing wrong with running 18psi on that turbo everyday.

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys, much appreciated.

This is really good news for my mate, i'll let him know.

The reason i asked about changing the boost setting was not to raise the boost but to actually make low boost even lower - just so there was more gap between sedate and arse on fire mode. And yep E85 is on the cards.

Thanks all!

Rather than starting a new thread hoping some of you knowledgeable folks can provide input here.

In terms of running the above mentioned car on e85, what flow upgrades are needed if needed ie.

With regards to fueling, the car has tomei 550cc injectors, nismo fuel reg, bosch 044 pump mounted in tank, and is bored to near 2.6l capacity.

Already have a tuner in mind so that's ok.

Thanks all.

    • This car has run before on this z32 ecu can get the part number for you, I have tried with no AFM it didn’t change anything, I compression tested today 140-150 across all 6 cylinders, also set fuel pressure to 43psi. The only weird thing was cylinder 1 plug was black and fouled other 5 cylinders were just wet with fuel. Spun cas by hand and confirmed injectors are clicking
    • Since you came here to ask for help, have you thought about answering our questions, that might help us lead you to why it was skipping, or have you given up on getting advice?
    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
