Circuit work? and you are choosing big cams to make it even more laggy when those turbs are lag monsters already? Are you sure?

As far as i no, when you build a stroker, you go a smaller cam cause the turbos come on quicker.

them size cams would be for a 2.6 running RS Turbos and everything balanced right up so it can rev. Specaily for circuit work. Its either one or the other, Revs or CC's...... as far as i no..... anyway

The T04Z is not an upgrade over GT-RS's.

What if anything is going to be done to the head ?

And who is building your engine ?

I would be having a good chat with them in regards to the whole package and what you idealy want to achieve.

Cams are always a compromise in the respect that to get more top end you will sacrafice bottom end and vice versa',

If you are having the engine built by someone experienced with RB26 or RB stroker engines they should be able to provide you with a combo that will best suit your end goal.

Just dont get to fixated on peak power especially if circuit racing is the main priority as the fastest car at the track is not always the one with the most power.

Yeah, too wild for ur application i think! Go something smaller, something to at least avoid head machining for clearances. Then advance up that inlet cam alot maybe to the max, and enjoy possibly 500rpm better response, ive seen it on a built gtr with -10s.

Generally the larger the engine the more tame an equivalent cam will be to my knowledge, ie a big rb25 cam will be even bigger and lumpier for an rb20, it comes down to cc's per cylinder basically.

rb26 and rb27 tho, not sure ur gonna get too much difference, head work would probably influence cam performance more than an extra 100cc. redline in both ur rb27 will be similar to the 26 i'd assume.

if it was an rb26 vs rb30 hybrid question, its a tough choice for cams, u need a decent size to breath with extra cubes, but cos it wont rev hard without big dollars, the cams might be in vain cos the profile and duration is more for top end!

Sorry bout the rant, tried to keep it simple. just my 2c.

Speak to someone in the know for sure. But decide what ur hoping to rev it to, powerband, power goals etc and what else will be done throughout the motor before deciding on cams tho.

i found the guys at camtech to be helpful

http://www.camtechcams.com.au/

cant remember his name, but one guy there seems to know his rb's pretty damn well, see what he has to say.

good luck

  • 5 weeks later...

Have a chat to Paul at Red R Racing, ive personally seen him make turbos come on earlier by switching to larger camshafts. Its all in the headwork (port and chamber design). Just changing the head design and cams on one car made it come on boost nearly 1000rpm earlier and the difference in the torque curve was incredible.

He used to run Tomei 260's with his GT-RS's and it was a laggy pig, he re-did the head with big JUN items and it was like a completely different car making peak torque really early without dropping off till about 9500rpm.

im running 280deg cams in my car with a HKS T04Z, come up to Newy and ill take you for a drive.

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
