Hi folks, I have a fairly mild R33. Mods are limited to a full 3inch catback exhaust, std airbox with custom ram air scoop and BMC filter as well as an R34 intercooler.

I plan to doing the free boost mod in the short term to get 7-8psi the whole time. (maybe 9-10 given my supporting mods?)

Will the std fuel pump flow enough for this setup or will it need to be upgraded? If so what is the reommended part numbers?

My current fuel pump appears in good nick, not noisy, and the car does not appear to be running out of fiel up top, pulls strong and no missing or running issues.

Thanks

Jason

it will be fine to around 230rwkw from memory.... you could/should replace it if you want piece of mind as fuel is very very important and it will be 15 years old by now

If it ain't broke don't fix it doesn't apply to old fuel pumps. If it leans out or fails at high revs bang goes your motor. There is a Walbro with the skyline fitting kit:

or the Bosch 040 in tank.

i had a strange miss at idle one day so it put a new Walbro fuel pump in and has been great fixed up the miss at idle i was pretty sure it was on its way out :)

there are a lot of fake walbros though so be careful but for $180 bucks its cheap upgreade knowing your not going to run out of fuel

Had it 4 years like this

Any part on a car can fail at any time be it new or old

The problem with fuel pumps is if they go from working to failure instantly while driving around normally it's usually fine as the car will usually just stall on you or simply won't start as others have said. It's when they slowly begin to fail and it gradually leans out more and more due to a loss in fuel pressure or when you start giving the car a bit of a thrashing, that's when it can take an engine with it.

PM-R33 is spot on. if it fails this is OK as the engine stalls

its only when you are pushing power out of it, and it cant keep enough

the engine has enough fuel to run, but not enough to be safe, so it leans out

your engine goes bang

we've seen a GTR R34 do this with a pump that couldn't keep up, costly rebuild and dangerous fire

i have basically the same mods as you and my pump is fine.

even though it is still working ok i am going to change it very soon.

i figure for $150-$180 it is a very cheap assurance.

and going by the recommendation of well known skyline mechanic, the walbro is fine to use.

there is one guy in this country who has gone through 4 engines in the last 3 months. he kept rebuilding the engine and was not interested in searching for the reason it is happening.

He is now asking for my help. Pump will be replaced and AFR's will be checked now ;)

    • Food for thought, the stock oil filter thread is a 3/4-16 UNF, which has an ID of about 10 to 12mm (according to ChatGPT lol). Now compare than to an 10AN, which has an ID of about 14mm (Raceworks is 14.2mm, Speed flow is 14.27mm).
    • Yep, totally get that. However hooking in for Generator back up is only a few hundred bucks for the wiring. You could put a couple of those in (for different circuits explicitly) and run a couple of baby generators. Bonus, you can balance them across different circuits, and now have backups in your backup. I'm looking at buying places that won't even have water etc, and I don't mind the idea of getting off the electric grid either, even with everything you've said. This country already has enough power outages that even the mains grid isn't that reliable anymore. I do agree though on spending a bit more to get better gear, and to add some extra redundancy in to the system too.
    • You can set hard reserves on your battery system, and it can't be discharged past that.
    • That sounds like an excellent idea. But total self-sufficiency means exactly that. You have no-one else to blame when your system faults out and you have no power for a week or two while it gets fixed. You'd have to go the whole hog and get a diesel genny and all the switchover gear, to get you through such times. And, despite the fact that over 20 years, my system has been pretty reliable**, I have seen so many inverter explosions (or less dramatic deaths), panel and roof JB fires, and so on, over that time, to know that the stuff is the same as any other bulk Chinese manufactured stuff. The failure rate is well above zero - both on the equipment and on behalf of the meth addled installation labour force. And then..... warranty and means of redress against the supplier you bought the gear from. Best I can tell is that only a handful of solar companies are still around within 5 years of starting their advertising pitch. They disappear and phoenix like crazy. So, as per 1st paragraph, I suspect the only way to is go balls deep and spend maybe 2-3 times as much as you might think, so that you have every base covered. Plus, know and understand your gear intimately, so you can diagnose problems, sort them out yourself, etc, etc. Plus, probably have to consider upgrading various parts as the years pass, to maintain compatibility with newer stuff, performance and reliability, etc, etc. Whereas, remaining attached to the grid has an ongoing cost that keeps going up even if you use bugger all power from it. But it does provide the fallback in case of the worst case with your own gear. You either pay up front or as you go, I suspect.
    • Add more solar panels to the array. Call the electricity company and tell them you're moving out... Live off grid electric wise
