Hey Gents,

My car a 32 GT-R will soon be back on the road and am looking at getting it somewhat ready for trackwork.

Just interested in what various people are using steering wheel wise, pro's and con's of various types recommendations etc, because at the moment I dont really know whats out there available for me :)

I bought the car with an Isota steering wheel :) the thing is hideous and besides being horrible to hold, detracts from the otherwise sexy interior.

Cheers,

Mitch.

I have a deep dish OMP wheel which I like because it gets the wheel off my knees. I find that for my best seating position on the peddles, I need to reach for the wheel just a bit and my knees are too close to the wheel.

I have been looking at wheels a bit lately and found these on Just Jap. I haven't tried them but the look good for the $$$. I have heard there pretty good but like I said, I haven't seen or tried, yet.

One thing to be wary of from my experience is size. I made the mistake of opting for a smaller diameter wheel than what came standard on the car and it was horrible to drive with so had to replace it. But I now use a Sparco suede wheel (with gloves) and it does the job nicely.

We bought one of that JJR wheel for the budget GT4 build Noddy and it was quite good. Sent it back though as it was just toooooo dished for our application.

We tried various others from JJR, but that particular suede wheel was the only one we couldn't twist into a pretzel just by staring at it.

And yes, as the Snow says, don't go too small, most people do because they think it's "sporty". It also important that you can still see the dash gauges.

I prefer a smaller wheel. 350mm is legal but feels too big to me - except in the Patrol lol. I've had a 330mm Sparco (think its A Sparco Ring) thats been on my last 4 cars now. Can still see the gauges. Its a personal preference.

I don't like big dished wheels in modern cars. You certainly don't need one in a 32GTR with the telescopic column.

I had a leather version of that JJR wheel - they're a generic cheapie. Mine was GKTech branded. The rim was a bit thin to be comfortable, as was the in-your-face driving position - for me anyway. And reaching forward about 4" to get to the indicator stalk gets old quick.

yep if daily driven 100% avoid suede. it's only suitable for a track car in which you use gloves all the time. you'll get sick of having black hands all the time otherwise and the thing will just wear out super fast.

One thing that's important to me is the thickness of the rim itself. too thin feels awful to someone like me with fairly big hands. somewhere around 330 or 340mm feels about right to me in a skyline and if you are tall some dish is a good idea to space it back off your knees and get the wheel nice and close to your body. with big hands the gap to the indicator stalks is not a big deal and the extra knee room is a good thing.

brand wise I quite like the nardi's and really like the personal wheels (actually made by nardi too), they have some models which have a nice thick rim. I like the grinta I think it's called in 330mm. I also quite like the kinoshita wheels (KEY!S Racing), great feel but a bit 'out there' style wise with the giant KEY!S RACING logo stitched around the rim.

You may want to look into the Nardi Deep Corn wheels, which I used to run as well. Very nice wheel, though a bit thinner than the RPM I'm now using.

The 330mm has less dish than the 350 (53mm as opposed to 80mm from memory), so may be a nice option for you.

Alot of nice wheels out there, I'm going to see how i can go about getting a Personal Grinta that BeerBaron was talking about, very nice looking wheel for the price, although getting a sparco with buttons and hooking the scramble boost upto it would be a whole lot of boy racer fun :/

yeah the nardi/personal grinta is a lovely wheel. nice thick rim which makes it nice to hold, two nice little bumps at 10 and 2 where you want them and otherwise a simple round wheel with not much dish. I've had about 3 of them now and generally take them from car to car if/when I change cars. :(

oh, and quality wise they are outstanding. the first one I got second hand in 2002 (on a car I bought). it's since been in 2 more GTRs and my silvia drifter and still going strong with just a tiny piece of sticking loose which surprisingly was already loose when I got it in 02 and hasn't gotten any worse! considering how well they last paying a bit extra up front is good value in the long run.

for the ultimate jap racing bling check out the KEY!S wheels. http://www.cardome.com/keys/op03.shtml

I'm rocking one in the 33 GTR atm. it sure is 'out there' but feels great and I am a massive wanker anyway so the little stars stitched into the rim don't bother me...

yeah baby.

I have an OMP WRC in suede which I love - they do come in smooth leather.

It has a slight dish to it which is fine normally, but now I am looking at a quick release hopefully it isn't going to sit too close.

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
