To cut long story short, we found theres a small piece of black housing which is attached to the actual airbox that is blocked (from factory). This is connected to a side air intake (probably doesnt matter to a lot of people since 90% of the people I know runs pod filters). This can be undone by depressing 2 clips which is used to secure the bung to the box (I actually saw-ed 2mm off the tip and found out later about the clip). Good news is, I can actually hear the stock bov (I never knew you can, wank factor) and it seems to boost better/more responsive!

Hopefully its ok to take that bung again because I still dont understand why they have that from factory....

When I had my R33 GT-R, I found that bung and knocked it out.

Yes it brought :blink::blink::blink: to my face as I could hear the whooosh of air going through my K & N.

And I'm sure my car thought to itself, "Aaah, a breath of fresh air!" :P

Funny you mention that! I just picked up my 97 GT-R last thursay which was dead stock. First thing on the list was to makes improvements on the intake with a K&N High-Flow panel filter, and make some fort of cold air feed to the std box. I had great results doing this with my RB20 R32 so I steered clear of any pod filters.

I seen this plug on the end, and was interested to see where it could possibly channel air through as it's blocked off and completely useless. So I shined a light through and had a look through the hole next to the front passenger indicator to see if there was a passage for air to pass though. You can clearly see that there is enough room for some flexi-piping to be bent and lead into the side hole.

I set this up on my car yesterday and came up great - Looks neat too. I managed to squeeze an ~75mm pipe from the indicator and squashed though that side hole and then into the side entrance of the airbox. From what I could tell it feels a lot more responsive and seems to spool up easier, including more induction/BOV noise.

I'll take some photos when I get home later in the arvo up put them up here.

Here are some photos to show you my setup. Pretty easy to so, just a pain in the ass to gain access to the areas - You'll have to remove the guard lining that runs underneath the front bar to the wheel arch. About half a dozen clips and a dozen screws. You could probably take off the front bar, but would be so much harder to properly align the pipe, let alone all the extra work in taking it off!

Could've probably done it slightly neater, but the indication housing it too annoying to work around and trim bits off, so I settles on that. It's just a flexi-pipe you can buy at any automotive store. It does enough :thumbsup:

Yea... it does sound and feel good after that. I wonder why I've never read about this ever on the forum. Maybe thats why everyone said the stock airbox is good for more than 300kw.

This has been only one of several 'breathing' restrictions by NISSAN to justify to governmental authorities in Japan that they're only building cars up to a max of 206Kw. :banana:cheeky devils

I didn't actually realise until just then where the other end of the hole was. In the wheel arch.

R32_GODZILLA, I like what you've done there. I think i'll give it a go and try it tomorrow.

Thanks guys :banana: Like i said I believe the easiest point of access would be removing the guard lining and you have all the access you need. Should've taken some photos during the operation - I was just too eager to get it done as I needed to use the car and didn't think!

Had done this a while ago to the 33 GTR too and it's great - a good compromise as it adds a bit of character without being "Brighton-le-sands" spec

Anyway its always good to share something like this since we're all here to learn more about our cars.

I did a quick job today.

Just to get an idea, will fix it up later.

Would this affect driving in anyway? Maybe some placebo effect, but I felt my car was slightly restricting when letting go of the accelerator.

There is less suction + bov noise now though.

I'm unable to run the snorkel due to not having one and my main reason not to have source one yet, is because of an upgrade to the radiator (quite a bit thicker).

The pipe I used was maybe a bit too big in diameter, I don't have much room between the guard/front bar and where the airbox outlet is, so the pipe gets squished, reducing its overall open area.

On that note, I have a bit too much piping (length), but I didn't want to cut it now and find out later that I don't have enough.

Temporary fit, as eventually an oil cooler will be put around this area.

Would this be better or worst than what I originally had, just the hole there open in the wheel arch - no feed.

I've posted this elsewhere and someone has mentioned, with the corregated piping, would not allow a smooth air flow.

Would this be a problem, and be worst than having the hole just there as it was with no air feed?

    • The car/ECU will have all the sensor that it needs and expect to have. I think i do not have to explain to you how the Link is way better specialy if you have swapped engine   I just do not want to deal with any "problems" cuz i have only Nistune which i learned is not that great and in my case cant even deal with that speed problem (Link can) And of course it will be way more easier to tune and diagnose and safe. And for the ECU/speed problem...i dont know.

If your manual 1st gear goes to 7k rpm and will hit the rev limiter unless you shift, you have the older TCU.   Why do I need to buy another ecu license/phone flash if I already have it on my ECU tune? The TCU is its own computer module. It is completely separate from the ECU. Because of this, you will be required to purchase a TCU license and, if your tuner has it, the phone flash license required to tune it via phone/bluetooth.   Do I need TCU tuning? TCU tuning is NOT required. However, the faster your setup, the more it will assist in track and dragy time consistency.   If I’m ECU tuned by (tuner A) can I get my TCU tuned by (Tuner ? Yes, since it’s a different module and a completely separate flash, you can have two different tuners. However, it is highly recommend that you have both tuned by the same tuner. For me, my TCU tuning will directly complement my ECU tuning style and features and running my ECU and another TCU or vice versa MIGHT cause some issues. At this time and for the foreseeable future, I will only be tuning my current ECU tuned customers TCUs.     I have a SYVECS AWD controller. Do I still need it? Yes! The AWD controllers main job is to control your AWD system. However, with TCU tuning, you will no longer need the auto-shift function as that will be done through the TCU. The AWD controller will still be very beneficial for racers looking to maximize traction on the launch.     Shift schedule changes: holding gears longer at lower pedal input as well as max shift rpm changes. Please note, the new ECU race rom coming out will address 90% of the shitty drivability issues these cars have through custom maps from myself and Racebox—as well as others I am sure.   Increase shift speeds: as seen in the videos I’ve been posting, the TCU shifts much faster once tuned.   Increased shift pressures: as also seen in the videos, much firmer full throttle shifts.

    • The fancy pants red shock tower brace is finally incoming from MX5 Mania, getting it shipped from 'Merica has been a long and problematic process, and GWR, the 'Merican supplier will not ship directly to consumers outside of the US, Mania basically had to order a heap of them, the colour choice was silver, or red, and we all know anything red adds 5 killerwasps of dynotorques..... Whilst it does fit over a 2.5, and I've seen a few photos and videos of it being installed and fitting, google also says it might get real close to the FAB9 intake front runner, people in the US says it does fit with the FAB9 intake, except for one person who said it slightly touched.......so there is that.....LOL..... As it seems that I am the first in AU to have this combination of parts there's no local knowledge about fitment, so I'm just a willing guinea pig in this endeavour, I'll cross my fingers and toes and hope for the best In other news, I ordered stuff from China  on the same day I ordered the 23° silicone bend from Victoria, the stuff from China arrived a day ago, the 23° silicone bend is still travelling around Australia thanks to Australia Post, and "may" be here next week
    • Very good news...I contacted Racebox about it last night. My car is a 2016 so remains to be seen if it is compatible, requires a TCU swap, or is impossible.
