So for some reason in the past week or so both my low beam headlights in my r34 skyline have stopped working.

The car originally had xenon headlights, converted to halogens at compliance. Previously been fine but now both have packed it in at the same time.

Parkers and high beams both work. R + L relays in the fuse box can both be heard to click when the lights are turned on but no action. All fuses appear intact (separate R + L fuses) and both globes look ok from a quick macro glance.

With the separate R + L relays and fuses I feel like I am missing a common link between both sides?

Don't have a multimeter at home but might have to source one for a closer investigation I think.

Anyone got any ideas about common problems? Im pretty sure its related to the dodgy conversion which has been done at compliance (ballasts still in place with wiring cut) but am a little bit stumped where to go from here and what could cause a common problem on both sides.

Thanks,

Renee..

Edit: Just to clear up any confusion - I think both headlights stopped working at the same time but not 100% sure as the car rarely gets driven at night. Last time it was driven at night was about a month ago and both lights worked then.

man i was just about to make my own thread..!! the other night i noticed my drivers side h/l went out along with the parker..... a few times it would flicker on and off but mianly stay off... only high beams wud work... tonight i was driving along and thought why is it so dark.. then i realised my left side h/l has gone as well.. now i only have the left hand side parker working and high beams (without the right hand side parker working on high beams aswell)

mines an R34 sedan... and mines the same as yours obviously were XENON's but durring comliance have been reverted to plain old lights (not sure if ballasts are sitll there i think my ballasts are gone actually)

anyone know what it could be?

Ok obvious things first

Light bulbs? Yes i know youve probably checked them but still

Fuses? Probably not but im not sure how the lights are wired in 34s so would pay to check anyway

Earth-wiring? Look at the wires that come off the headlights and follow them as far as you can. Most of the time if someones done a dodgy wiring job its pretty obvious or can be made pretty obvious by peeling off electrical tape wrapped around wires etc.

Unlike older style bulbs, the filaments in halogen bulbs can blow and still look ok. You need to check with a multimeter, or connect them straight across the battery to check if they or still ok.

Yep was just globes. Blown like suggested.

Just odd for both to go spontaneously at the same time.

Id say that both going at the same time is like a 1000/1 chance.

It happened to me the other week too. Switched them on, saw them go on (in the garage) drove for 20min, and when i arrived and pulled into a carpark they were both out :s Was just the bulbs. So wierd.

make that 2/1000 man, i just went to the petrol station to fill up before i went to study, worked fine, then i get to the petrol station turn em off... after i pay come back and they both blew at once and i got no idea how to reach the globes..

Whats the easiest way of determining whether or not you have legitimate Xenons and not the compliance halogen ones? On the RHS. the middle light has blown. Not sure what I'm after to replace it. Any help will be muchly appreciated as I need to drive to work at nights and don't want to get pulled over (for obvious reasons).

Cheers, Brandon

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
    • I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all I hope everyone is all okay
