Hey guys i have a R33 GTST with the usaul mods only recently the car is struggling to crank like its very weak and stuff during start up, then if i leave it a day or two it won't start. All the dash lights/head lights etc turn on just when i try to crank it i just hear the fuel pump priming and there is no cranking sounds when i try to crank it....so im just wondering has my starter motor died or is it something else?

Cheers

Chi

Battery, alternator or starter. Sounds like the former.

Your starter needs a lot of power to crank your engine over, sometimes there will be enough charge to power the fuel pump and dash lights, but then not enough to crank the engine.

Charge it or get a new battery...

mmm so you don't reckon its the starter motor? il put the bolts back on the starter motor tm morning and change a new battery over....alternator is quiet new got that done like last year. cause i thought if it was the battery it would go tick tick tick tick

If it was your alternator your battery light would come on as you were driving as eventually there would be no charge in your battery, if it was your starter motor after you gave the starter motor full voltage it still struggles to crank or what it sounds like is your battery can't hold charge anymore.

Could also be some other small things a lot of people over look, like a poor earthing on your battery.

Id tip its your battery, if it was your starter motor leaving the car alone for a few days isnt gona effect it but I say your battery not holding charge if your not getting clicking that just means the batteries really dead. Try with a jump starter if starts easy then its your battery.

turn headlights on and then try and crank it. see if they dim.

if you can get access to the starter motor u will see where there is the main nut that the power goes too and then the little electrical tab that the start signal goes too. take the little start signal wire off and check with a test light to see if the wiring is getting power when the key is turned to crank, if not than there is a wiring issue.

while your at the starter motor get a screwdriver and short the main power terminal with the start signal tab, do this carefully and only touch it quickly then take it off, this should make the starter kick in and crank the engine, this will tell you the starter is ok.

let me know

    • Sane enough. Remove the roof liner, because the acid will go everywhere.
    • Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help and experienced opinions.  I have spent a lot of my life working on boats so I'm pretty good with fibreglass. I'll take everybody's advice in here;  I'll cut a little more of the 2nd layer away as it's a bit crunchy rust and also it's sitting high now. Then I'll wire brush it all a bit to get off anything loose, then I'll soak the bejesus out of it all in rust converter. I'll make sure to get a little hose piece and feed it into all the holes and gaps between the roof layers. Then I'll fibreglass up the holes.  Then I'll get a pallet of filler and mix it with 3 buckets of hardener and hope that is enough to build up the roof corner.  Does that sound sane? Is one type of filler better than others for this?
    • My goals for it atm are to get it registered, respray and some mild power gains eventually... I picked up the car from an elderly gentleman near the border of NSW and VIC, its honestly a bit rough and looks like its been driven on a farm (because there was so much dirt underneath). Last week I dropped the subframe and emptied the old fuel out + added a new fuel pump (think the old one went bad from old fuel). Now I'm onto fixing a coolant leak at the rear of the engine + adding a new radiator as the old one is corroded. After that i have a new bumper, coils (as the old were leaking) and lots more
    • Welcome buddy! Plenty on here and YouTube. What are your plans for it? Good luck with the Rwc and Rego bud!
    • Love this so much! Please post a photo when you have a bike on the trailer.  I was a little bit worried about having a tow bar on the Skyline, but having it hidden behind the number plate is genius
