just wondering, those with an oil cooler....

after running around in your car for whatever period of time, whats the temp of your oil cooler core like?

is it so hot you can't touch it?

is it cool enough to touch for a little bit?

or is it cool?

i had mine installed a while ago, and i dont think its working. its practically cold after a good 15-20 min drive, and on the track i get temps of around 120-130 degrees...as indicated by my factory gauges.

cheers,

It should get quite warm, especially after a "spirited" drive. Even the oil cooler on the mini gets pretty warm after a short drive. Does your oil cooler setup have a thermostat? If it does, maybe that isn't working properly????

Dunno if the trust kits have a thermostat. HKS kits do, they have an additional return line for when the thermostat is closed.

Pay Anthony a visit, he's got one of each at the moment so you can do a comparison. There's a big difference.

dudes, isnt 120-130 deg. quite high ???

i got a grex oil cooler and the oil temp sensor is off a sandwich plate where the oil filter is. on my gauge i dont think i have ever scene it above 100 deg, even after givin it a bit. mind u i have never been on the track.

hahah thanks tony :)

the grex kit consists of an oil filter relocation kit and core.

the core is sitting in the standard kit position and that is just left of middle behind the grill, in between my front mount core and my a/c condensor.

i didnt install it, it was installed by c&v, removed from one car and then straight onto mine. from the block there is a plate replacing the oil filter. two braided lines run to the oil filter relocation kit. from this plate, where the oil filter sits, 2 lines run to the core.

the core is dead cold, the braided lines from the block are warm. i suspect the problem is lying with the plate where the relocation kit sits. but i'll have to check those lines from the block again!

in any case, its going to the workshop thursday morning. i just hope its something simple...

Just thought of something really obvious.

Is the factory sensor reading the oil temp as it is leaving the block, so before it gets pushed through the core.

I only installed an oil temp gauge on the weekend but have noticed that the oil takes a lot longer to heat up than the water. The sensor is reading the temp in the sump which probably has something to do with that, as there is a reasonable amount of oil sitting in there to heat up. Once it is heated up though it stays pretty consistantly around the 90-100 degree mark.

If there is a thermostat in the relocation plate then what you are describing as happening makes sense. Say the thermostat is opening at 100 degrees for example, for every day driving it will almost never direct oil through the core. Then on a track day it's obviously seeing higher temps and going through the core but you are seeing the outgoing temp after it's circulated the block. It's kind of like plumbing a water temp sensor into the top hose of the radiator to see the outgoing water temp from the engine rather than seeing the cooler temp after the radiator.

Frank: your oil temp is reading awefully high dude...mine reads no higher then 95 degrees during normal drives and goes up to 100 when punting it a bit. I've also set warning 110 degrees. My sensor is also reading straight from the oil cooler and not from the oil lines on the block itself. Also what kind of oil are you using?

just to clarify guys, my oil temps are perfect for everyday driving and also for a quick squirt. they only reach 130 when im on the track and after i've done 3 hot laps.

BHDave: i am unsure where the factory sensor is, i'll find that out tomorrow :D i had the impression it was sitting on the block where the oil filter plate is...but im really unsure :)

    • Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Replace the turbos. Probably completely separate issues.
    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
