Hey all,

As some of you know, my car was written off last week and consequently I'm being paid out. At first I thought Sweet! R33 GTST! as I only had the N/A previously, but now I'm not so sure. I need/really want to buy a house in the next year or so and the insurance money is almost a complete deposit.

My problem is that I still need a car, I absolutely cannot go without one. So...my dilemma?

R32 GTST under $15K - lets me stay with a Skyline (PREFERRED)

OR

Any runabout max $7-8K - cheaper, but seriously? (SMARTER?)

...Help?

-Greg.

I'd just get a 32 GTS-T for around $11k or so? but import yourself. Local ones are hovering around $14k (or even more) which i think is a bit much. Thats not much more than the budget is it, and not going to make much difference to buying the house or not at all right??

Buy the car, Buy the house, and have the best of both worlds :D

I can still get a house with both options, but obviously spending less will enable me to get a place sooner. I can see now that I'll almost definitely go the R32.

how about getting a shitter for now (can anyone say automatic 1988/1989 7k silvia j's) and then when you go for the homeloan get a bit extra for the new car. That way your interest rate is lower too, and at the end of it you'll always have a car on hand.

well going from a 96/97 gts to an r32 gtst probably wont appeal to you that much, your probably used to the nice updated interior/exterior and features etc..

granted you a turbo, but its probably what your used to, i wouldnt like to goto an r32 from my 33, personal perference of course

maybe buy a crap car, sort out your house stuff and then go nuts, sometimes the best way

also youll need a proven savings record for a house loan, not just i have 15k in my bank can i a house loan. how much desposit do you plan on having? i tihnk 20k is about target

A Savings record is not a problem as I already have most of the deposit saved, this will just put me over the line.

I've decided against the R32, and just to go an old Falcon (I've always been a Ford man) or something for the time being.

Can I still hang out with you guys? :)

hehehe i've always been a ford man also, hence why i bought a ford raider 4wd as a daily driver, i reckon you get a reliable car for a couple of grand that wont need the radiator fluid poured in everytime you start the car.

or get a lada like james, or a bigger 4wd, just something to crush people, and then when you get a faster car you will appreciate the power because you'll be driving a heavier slower car for a while

w00t. mate, sux your car was totalled

congrats on getting a decent payout for the homeloan.

I am a Jap car man through and through so I woulda gone some sort of Jap import, even if it is a Silvia K's, Ceffy, FC (mmmm, stop tempting myself) to thrash around somewhat. Matter of choice really.

heh i'm not sure why ppl say this from time to time as the interior trim on both cars isn't that different. They both have a different feel in that the 32 is more of a ****pit type feel while the 33 is roomier.

Both have their charms and pitfalls. (tall people have a hard time in the drivers seat of the 32 etc)

The exterior design is subjective - for example there are also people out there who think all Skylines look crap.

As for more features on a 33 ??

    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
