GTR sold today. As sad as it is I have opted to look for an M35 over a 34 GTR.

As mad as you think I am , the stress of a modified GTR takes it's toll, and I can't own one unless it's modified.

What I'm after is just some advice on a few yards in Sydney.

I've been to prestige in Mosman and like what they have and seem to be nice guys. Are there any other yards worth looking at? Are there specific things I should be looking for in the car.

I want a turbo but prefer a later model series 2 which I believe aren't turbo'd. Does anybody think a later model car offers any more then just piece of mind over series 1. They seem very similar otherwise.

Any other random advice would be great as tomorrow is car shopping therapy day.

What I would suggest is drive a few of them. Both series 1 and 2 and in 2wd and awd, although series 1 you only have one option of awd.

After driving a few around, I have not made a decision on which is better, and perhaps there is no definitive answer. I love both the turbo and na versions, although I do own a turbo, I would still love to own an na. The torque you feel on the 3.5L donk is simply sensational as soon as you step on the gas. Obviously it runs out of puff up high.

Another point which may or may not be important to you is the how the Attesa works between the turbo and na cars. Turbos run on a hydraulic system while the NA's runs on a clutch setup. I don't know which system is better than the other. Perhaps they are very comparable to each other. I've felt how the series 2 Attesa works (the clutch system) and can't really notice the difference from the series 1 cars (hydraulics). They are both a pleasure to experience imo.

That car is certainly a sexy beast and was nice to drive, but having owned a GTR and my wife agrees, we really want Awd. Only problem is that has limited our options.

I am the same,I want a turbo but rather a more recent model in series 2 guise and the 3.5 does the job.

Can you guys tell me is there much involved in getting the radio sorted for local stations and can the pop up screen be useful for anything. Also the buttons on the dash are in Japanese kind of put my wife off. Is it easy to rectify these or more a matter of more money will solve them.

Radio comes converted by Prestige. The numbers displayed are just 15 units or something lower that what your really listening to, if that makes sense. Its not really an issue as you just spend a little time, preprogram the stereo, and then you have all your fav's.

Eugene is right, the instant torque of the 3.5 is great, no waiting, and it certainly makes it easy to drive in the burbs.

Popup screen conversion we are waiting on (eagerly :( ), the series ones are convertible to english. for S2, we're just waiting on a program to do so, same with S2 V35's coupes/sedans. Tv conversion is available for any model. It does tell you how much fuel your using... :D

You have to buy the US control unit, then pull the buttons out of it and refit them to your unit.

I believe the control functions are not identical as in the US they do not have the "TV" option.

The only buttons with Japanese should be the ones controlling the trip computer/ TV screen etc. If you're looking at a series 2, there were 2x versions of the computer with slightly different button functions and layout. The last of them had a "Car Wings" button Online help system, and some of the buttons have a different layout and size to the earlier S2, and different again to the S1. I don't think the V35 is the same, but some buttons maybe interchangeable. Chris Rogers in this forum had some of the Series 1 buttons but they were mighty expensive I believe.

Check my "garage" link to the left of this post, and then check "Images" to see the button assy on my 2006 S2 M35.

Yep yours is identical to the car I am looking at. Sounds like a bit of a pain to get it sorted. I know functionally it's not necessary but it kind of bugs my wife and enough reason for her to not want the car.

I'm after a 3.5litre axis sorry dimi but would have snapped yours up in heart beat otherwise. Can you tell me what was involved in getting your TV working. I know it's probably all in the info section but there is so much conversation that it takes a fair while to get through it all. Especially on mobile BB on the Ipad.

Sorry, I should have said the M35 buttons have a different layout to the USA G35 (although some are likely interchangeable) and the V35 is the same as the M35. I believe someone made conversion stickers available at some stage but they obviously didn't look that great. For the TV conversion, you can install an Australian spec TV tuner, utilising the existing aerials, but it must be able to output NTSC video to be compatible with the M35/V35 screen. I believe you then connect this to the Aux input of the existing tuner box that's located behind the cubby hole in the passenger side boot. There's plenty of info in this forum and Chook seems to be the expert with these.

Also, the Japanese to English conversion for the trip/fuel/service interval computer is expected soon for the S2. This won't give you Aust/NZ navigation though as maps don't appear to exist at present for the V35/M35.

Ok excellent.

All this querying hasn't been in vein as I have just done a deal on the white Series 2 Autech AWD Axis.

Won't pick the car up till late next week, but pretty happy all round.

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
