Hey Guys and Gals,

I could use all of your peoples opinions here as I cant seem to make up my mind.

Those of you who know me know how much I love my S2 33 GTST and how much work I have put into it over the last ten years. I has gone from a bog stocker to now having a really nice responsive 240rwkw with a very heavily detailed engine bay and all the SK/Bilstein suspension goodies which has made it a very nice car to drive and i get comments all the time on how well it goes and how nice the engine bay looks. I have done all the work myself and I am very proud of how it has turned out :D

Well time has taken its toll and it has developed a few little rattles and the paint has some stone chips and generally the car is starting to age a bit. It has had a great life with me and I maintain it meticulously so a couple of weeks ago I started looking into doing a full rebuild and I mean a FULL rebuild, strip it out, new body kit & full respray including the engine bay, some nice racing type seats and while all this was getting done build a Dirty 30 to drop back into the fresh car.

My research into doing all of this has been a bit of a pain as I am finding every engine builder I talk to has a different opinion on what I should build or wants to charge me an absolute fortune for what I consider a basic built motor (330+rwkw on E85, not hard with a 25/30)

So over lunch today I had a look around at a few of the Car Sale sites and in the for sale section here and have noticed that if I could probably get myself a very clean unmolested Series 3 R33 GTR for around the $25-35,000 mark. When I do the sums I would be looking at spending around at least $15,000 or so on my GTST to get it rebuilt (I have a mate thats going to do the painting for me mates rates and will do what I can myself with the other aspects of the build). And I could probably get somewhere around the $15k mark for my car if I was to sell it so it works out about the same.

The wife thinks Im mad either way but god love her she tolerates my car obsession as it keeps me off the streets...hahaha and I do enjoy the tinkering so this is where I am interested in your opinions people.

I kow at the end of the day its my decision but I have a soft spot for my GTST which I think is clouding my judgement a bit.

I have never really driven a 33 GTR in anger as a comparison but have been in a few so I get what the attraction is but after all the work I have already put into my car would the R be THAT much better???(besides the tuning potential of course)

Any way peeps what do you think?? Keep GR33DD and make her better than ever with a new look and the Dirty 30 or say goodby and put the money towards a 33 GTR.

Some pics to give you an idea of the work Ive put into it

Thanks for the offer Sam, nice ride BTW I just had a look. To be honest mate it would not be what I would go for. I'd be looking firstly at after Xmas, secondly I'd be looking for a series 3 and thirdly something stock or close to it.

It is a nice car though mate, you modify it yourself?

1.0 These cheap resprays you speak of.. hook a brother up?

See steveo knows whats what.. build the 25, high crown pistons (20 thou bore if u want) twin scroll is better for flow and response so do it! maybe a little bit of head work to increase midrange, cause who wouldnt want a head job with all that work

Then if you go with the 30 ill take the bottom end off your hands :D

I'll see what I can do 2.0, I've told him I want the same colour again as it's easier and it's a bit uncommon but he wants to add a bit of tint or gloss or something to make it stand out a bit more.

I just nodded and smiled as he's the expert. He is doing me a bit of a favour and it will be on his terms when he does it but next time i see him I'll have a chat for you

I have respect for the full house whole hog GTR. However a lot still boils down to whether the all wheel drive factor matters to you. You can easily have more power. As all unknown Skylines mean spending, have you thought of a R33 GTS4? Outlay for the starter vehicle is in the low teens or less. The Gracer show car was a GTS4.

Besides having 4 stud wheels and a NA engine what are the other differences to the turbo models? Same gearbox as the gtst or gtr? It might work but I reckon it would cost probably about the same to get it up to a gtr's standards wouldn't it?

Do the gts4's have the pumped guards?

Despite the Advan gracers badging, to me a gts4 will never be a gtr, but you get a "blank canvas" car at much lower initial outlay. You could keep your R33 AND buy a gts4 to modify. If you want to finish with a single turbo or a dirty thirty, then the start point cost is much lower. The end point depends.

With a GTR the start point is higher a R33 is newer than the R32 of course, has a proper crankshaft etc, but the spending obviously starts higher. To me a big consideration is legalities. As legalities get tougher, you can lift the bonnet on a high power close to stock looking GTR.....

Dave,

My opinion would be to keep your R33 and freshen up the engine, fit some nice seats, a Nice 1 way mech LSD and some small brake up grades. You will only get 10K or so for the GTST it is very sad but that is what they are worth  . I am sure that it is worth a lot more than 10K to you.

A GTR will need a engine fresh up as a minimum as most people drive them hard and they require more maintenance that the trusty GTST. I think you would get a nice GTR then get depressed when you are spending more money then you budgeted on a car you don't have a sentimental attachment to.

Your GTST is very nice I think a small engine build on pump fuel not E85 as the last thing you want to think about when you take the wife or kid for a drive is where is the next servo. You would be suppressed how much fun you can get out of a good set up with out going to the 3ltr and E85. Stick with the 25 bottom with 9:1, Nitto oil pump, HKS 2835 pro s turbo kit, and HKS cams and mild head work. that will give you a nice 250 - 300 rwkw with 14-19 psi of boost depending on tune and will last you a long time if you look after it.

Any way what ever choice make you will still have fun they are both great cars.

Cheers.

Hey Ryan the 2835 is pretty much a 3071 yeh?

I am thinking TS 3076 but I am worried about the lag and don't won't to choke it up with a .63 just to keep the response, I'm hoping that with TS I will get close to 3071 response????? If I'm to keep the 25 (which I'm starting to think is the go) I'll have more to spend for things like a 6boost mani and ex gate.

If I was to build up the 25 would you suggest going down the 26 crank/rods etc path or is that overkill??

Dave,

I have 3071 with ex gate etc, but if I was going to keep it road regoed I would stay with the low mt and a HKS kit. They are well proven and look stock. If you go hi mt etc you have more chance of getting into trouble with the law. Stick with the above and the 25 crank, keep it simple. Feel free to give me a call if get stuck.

Cheers.

hey Dave!

its tough...I was in the same situation early 2009.

I wanted something quicker, and somehow cheaper! but more track suited.

I looked at my current 33 - 255rwkw, same suspension, little bits here and there. and to make it go quicker - I needed to sort the suspension out for something better and bigger brakes - and tracking it more meant more chance of a rebuild and roll cage

that was about 15k as you said~! I had already poured alot of $$ into it so I cut my losses and decided to sell and now have a fairly competitive mx5 track car!

so yeah, dont know if im helping but if you buy the 33 GTR - what sort of coin would you put into it to go fatser than current 33 gtst? i wouldnt be too much however then the cost of maint of a gtr?

perhaps it is time to move on mate! you were telling me this at wakie earlier in the year!

10 years has been a good labour of love - time to move on!

OR...do what Ryan did!!

Hey Chubbs,

Just when I thought my mind is made up you go and throw a spanner in the works!....hahaha

Bloody tough decision this turning out to be, it's the guys like you that when they come for a ride tell me how well it goes that make me think I'll regret getting rid of it lol

I think from what's been said here that a GTR may end ip being more trouble than it's worth.........BUUUUUUT to keep it as is or rebuild, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm??????

Personally Dave, you've got a beautiful looking car, with a superbly responsive engine that, at this point in time is not showing any signs of misfortune.

I'd keep it, leave it as it is, tweak the suspension, do the interior up (Seats etc), and put a nice diff in it.

You will find spending $5000 on tyres, suspension and a diff will net you many many many more seconds around a track then a car with another $15K thrown at the motor alone.

You will also find it nicer to drive on the street, and it won't be a contakerous bitch to drive at all from a laggier turbo setup etc.

Nah not a full tracker Ryan, the aim is to build a street rego'd track car that I can still take out for a lazy cruise but unleash the fury when the mood strikes.

BTW I am planning on gettingan engineers cert if I have to so ex gate will be ok as long as it's plumbed back. Bubby never goes in it cause it's too load and the mrs rarely goes in it as well. When we do the family thing it's in the famy truckster (read:Pathfinder) much more kiddy friendly. Just out of curiosity what size rear do you run on your '71?

I've heard that yours is very responsive as well, you happy with the boost delivery?

As I said before I had a '76 twin scroll in mind but im unsure wether TS soaks up THAT much lag???

EDIT: Matty so you reckon ditch the SK/Bilstein setup and go coilovers?

If you've got the SK Bilstein setup, keep it, get some good camber arms etc under it if they're not already done. Redo ALL bushes especially the aging ones, then throw a new diff in it.

It'll be like a new car!

The moment you can get suspension 100% sorted, it's nicer to drive.

The largest complaint I have with my car (Apart from always blowing up, LOL) is the suspension is not good. I had no major dramas with Shell's brakes which are stock, and I hounded them so very hard, so throw some good rotors on, and matching pads, and you'll be sweet.

A laggy car on the street, is NOT fun!

at the end of the day though, it's upto you

personally i only just got my car but i just spent the whole weekend cleaning her and i think in 10 years ill still feel the same as i did after this weekend ;)

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
