Before i go and buy a 1989 GT-R i would personally check it out myself at the auction...

i would :

Check EVERYTHING possible on the car from brake pads to dints to ciggerete burns...

if the Car seems to be clean id buy it.. sometimes you get lucky and get a bargain ... sometimes you just get ript off...  

all i have to say.. there is nothing wrong witn buying a good and clean R32 GTR 89.

Your going to fly to Japan to check out a car? (Hypothetically, obviously)

well , when they are available to import then .. yess i will.

id rather pay 3,000$ and get accomedation and flight return ticket then waste 15 - 18 grand.

Well, considering you are only notified that a particular car is coming up for auction a day in advance at best, your either going to have to drop everything, pay for a full fare return flight (plus accomodation, plus meals, blah blah blah), or your going to have to go for a few days and hope a car comes up for auction while you are over there. I don't think either are very good choices...

A better idea is to find a good agent. Not only should you get the auction report but your agent's buyers in Japan will visit the auction and can personally inspect the car on the day of the auction.

Which is why finding a trustworthy agent is key.

There's quite a few auctions happening at the same time on the same day but at different place across Japan...how on earth you gonna check em all out even if you're over there?

Another question - it's a hassle to grab someone into the auction and the process takes a while (last time I was there it took me and my agent an hour to get the ok for me to go in and by the time I got into there, the car I wanted has been sold!)

My R32 GT-R was purchased from a supplier in Japan and as you would expect has been inspected and test driven and you get a report as well. I found several goodies in then that I didn't know of beforehand like a Greddy Profec-B, Tein Full height adjustable suspension, Mine's 320km/h speedo and much more...

You can pick up these car's at a relatively decent price, there are good examples and bad examples... It's also a factor of whether the car has had a hard life or not.

To all the clueless sceptics out there, I realise that most of you are crying about how you believe your gt-r will devalue because of a massive influx of all these gt-r's coming in... Deal with it, cars are a depreciating asset, whether you like it or not is something you have to ask yourself.

a good 93 or 94 r32 will always be worth more if not that its newer but due to all the sceptisism behind 89's.... i can see it being a big thing soon to brag about the year of our skylines...mines a 93 its better, mines a 89 i got a better deal than you on the same car!!! they are one and the same car, we all love them all, you are getting a bargain..not just 89's, but look in the classifieds there are a few really nice 93's in there for 30k 29k neg... thats unreal, for what you get... if you can get the same quality in a car 4-5 years older again, well done to you to... fact is most gtrs in aus arent perfect dont everyone kid themselves look at your own cars im sure they have small accident repairs or other problems, otherwise if your car was perfect it probs would of sold in the domestic market and not at an exporters auction... i guess what i wanna say is good luck to everyone with gtr's the nature of the market in japan ensures an element of instability in regards to oz getting the best cars,, if you have a good car 89- to present and you got a good deal well done to you...

I am sure alot of you guys would agree, it would be good if you could find out the full history of a car before you buy it. when i bought my silvia i bought it for a reason RB25DET. and from the pics it looked in good nick.

since picking it up from the boat i noticed; drivers door handle has been damaged almost beyond repair (around the actual handle). drivers door has hit a curb when opened, noticable pin dents. Left side has obviously been in an accident as FL control arm replaced, Left guard bulges out and is too close to the door (also no inner guard). scrape type ding behind door (much larger than described). paint job is not in very good order (paint on roof has that white look which won't polish out). wheel alignment showed that rear control arms are obviously either bent or need new bushes etc etc

was also once an auto, bear in mind that it only has 105K on the clock and 130K on the actual car (replaced at some stage). and the interior is in reasonable condition.

so even though there is these things wrong with it im still happy with the car, even though now its off the road to have a severe problem fixed with the engine.

you buy a cheap car you get what you paid for

well just to add to the conversation, i just checked out the sale prices of r32 gtrs at auctions in japan. it seems that 89 models are selling for the same, if not more then 93-90 year models. Ahh good ol aussie buyers.

Also, every 89 model was R rated which means accident, and some where the same price as a newer grade 4 car.

of course...dealers are stocking up on absolutely everything they can find to line their own pockets before the government puts a stop to it. Which should be hmm, 2 - 3 months time. Mr Ocumura who has this crapped out 1989 car sitting in his garage for the last 10 years is probably grinning ear to ear.

Imagine if 1989 VN Commodores suddenly become "cool" in like Uzebekistan and suddenly that rusted out and pox-box sitting out in your garden could suddenly be sold to somebdoy right across the world you're never going to even see for double what its worth.

I've already seen a couple of GTR advertised locally by dealers as 1989 that are here - would be interesting to see the sticker price on them and/or condition

reason i posted the silvia up is because they are cheap car in japan to begin with, ala why so many are drift cars.

and in japan they recycle their cars like nothing on earth, doesn't rego get more $$$ the older the car is?

At the end of the day u r still driving around a 15 year old car GTR or not, and its bound to have problems especially since 99% of them would have had the life thrashed out of them in those 15 years.

i totally agree with u pred. the problem is the people importing them, for example the mass mailing lists that i get flooding my email everyday. the problem is they are so gready to make as much money as they can, that they are using other aussies to try and convince the govt to stop the 15yo changes. Haha but no one realises that they only want this so that they can keep making money, and this has been oh so evident this last few months when every 89 year model crap condition car has been on there mailing lists.

Oviously i havent named companies but the perosn i got my car from is very responsible for the above mentioned. It makes me sick. If these greedy importers werent getttin crappy cond cars to make as much money as possible, then the 15yo rule would still be fine and not a problem. They should have only brought in the good quality ones only, and yes there are a few, but a minute number compared to the mass of them coming in.

You can still bring the good condition 1989 GTRs in through SEVS.. Just because the 15 year old rule is going to be scrapped, it doesn't mean that you can no longer bring in those 15 year old cars... They just have to pass the strict rules and safety regulations of SEVS, and not come into Australia, with absolutely no checks on condition or safety as they would through the 15 year old rule.

Although you haven't been specific, the only people I can think you are referring to is Prestige. If that is the case, I strongly disagree with what you are saying. I am currently looking for a car through Prestige and have found them to be as straight as they come. Just last week I emailed Geoff about a car at auction that I thought looked reasonable and he was quick to point out that it had accident damage and strongly recommended I did not persue purchasing the vehicle.

Yes, there are vested interests. Yes they want to keep their businesses going, but that doesn't mean it overrides their sense of integrity.

Althou i didnt mention names purposely, i did get my car thru geoff and found him to be very good with questions and overall serice.

However now, this whole importing every 15yo car possible b4 the rule changes situation is absurd and stupid, and quite frankly u can see that they are just tryin to make as much money as possible, and really dont care wat car u want.

All they see it as is another sale to them.

However there are other importers that are the opposite to this and will not buy junk cars.

lwells, althou 15 yo cars seem to be an absolute bargin, they arent really. For example due to the current situation with sevs not being fully implemented, 15yo cars have skyrocketed in price and importing. Due to this, cars like i mentioned b4, 90-93 model r32 gtrs, which are in better overall condition are cheaper then the mostly rough 89 models.

So for example the 15 yo rule is scrapped and sevs is fully implemented, the situation would obviosly change, where people could choose whatever model they wanted.

Now cause there are alot to choose from, the prices really shouldnt change too much, althou obviously the older 89 models will be lower then the newer models.

Say an 89 model was 700,000 yen and the 92 was 850,000 which is a possible prices.

Basically the only difference in cost from 15yo rule and sevs is the compliance difference.

So basically u can get a generally shitloads better car from the 15yo rule to the sevs ruling for only about 3000 difference. as im assuming complinace would be 4000 compared to 1000 for a 15yo car.

Basically that is all the difference.

So when u think about it, the 15yo rule is basically just allowing really cheap cars to get in really cheaply, however as soon as u bring in a decent car which is still fetching good prices in japan, the difference here is very minimal, and i personally would prefer it to change as the quality of cars would be alot better due to people having more to choose from.

I hope all this makes sense.

I am not actually arguing against SEVS. Rather I took exception at your assertion that certain people -- and from the details you gave, I assumed (correctly it seems) you meant Geoff -- were willing to import anything that moves as I have personally experienced the exact opposite.

EnricoPalazzo is right ... the difference is $3500 or so between SEVS and non-SEVS. Ok you do maybe have to factor in cost of replacement genuine pads, tyres, etc under SEVS which adds up, but its shouldn't be a killer if you really want a *nice* GTR and can afford it.

Personally..speaking for me -- the only reason I'd get a 1989 GTR is to fully restore it from the ground up: engine, body, everything as a project. And because you can't find a GTR thats in one piece for that here, may as well get the cheapest possible example you can find. I am tempted I'll admit.

Otherwise you may as well just buy an s13 or something and drive it into the ground..

    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well

Yes some vid from the day is up, here:  Note that as with all track day videos it is boring watching after the bloopers at the start.  The off was a genuine surprise to me, I've literally done a thousand laps around the place and I've never had instability there; basically it rolled into oversteer, slipped, gripped and spat me out. On the way off I mowed down one of the instructor's cones and it sat there all day looking at me with accusing cone eyes as I drove past. 1:13:20 was my fastest lap, and it was in the second session, 3rd lap.  It (or me!) got slower throughout the day as it got hotter.
