Anyone Else Struggle With The Practicality Of Owning A Gtr?

Recommended Posts

spent 1hour washing and waxing the GTR this morning, so it's in prestine condition all shinny and mirror reflections alround. Ran out of junk food so had to take a quick trip to safeway upon coming out of safeway there was a little kid with a broken leg taking pics of my car. he pleaded with me to take him for a spin and make one of his dream to come true. feeling sorry for him i took him for a 3 minute drive (down the street and back). upon coming back to safeway as he was getting out of the car he started crying, he's waiting dad angrily asked me what did i do to him to make him cry? before i said anything, while wiping his tears away with a smile the boy tells his dad "that was the best few minutes of his life". Beside the performance of driving a GTR times like that makes owing a GTR worthwhile.

your his hero... or the car is? good stuff

the little kid sounds like me 15 years ago. awesome!

Rowdy, thx for the encouragement to get rid of my skirt, might just do that:)

I thought I would give the GTR some TLC this morning and it reminded me of a married couple. At times, we dont really have a good look over our partner, inside and out. Sometimes, we lose focus on why we love them so much, not because its not there anymore, but because we dont give it the time to have a good look over them.

Well, this morning I spent some time going over the beast, no, not my wife, the GTR!! And f**k Me, I fell in love all over again- So Screw Practicality!!!!!!!!

The build and quality of this thing is amazing and when I give it the TLC that it needs, I see how great the car truly is.

So I am now moving forward looking to add to this beast in anyway I can. Thinking of a nice dark tint and painting my rims black. And then who knows, but hopefully I cant go much further than an already 320KW at the wheels,35,000km old N1 Engine;)

Thanks for pushing me back into my senses and hope I dont cause any divorces from my above analogy:(

hey mate,

bit off topic but how does the Gtr compare to the e36 m3? i can see you used to have both

i currently have a r33 gtr and considering getting into the beemer for a change,

what are your thoughts?

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to see other's opinion on owning a GTR. Whenever I own one, I seem to see that for me, they just are not practical. But when I dont have one, I seem to talk myself into why its Ok. Seems pretty dumb I know, but I have owned my R32 GTR, probably my 5th GTR and without a doubt, the best, but still seem to find myself saying, I need a completely different car.

I purchased this car because of the amazing build quality and reliability it had, as I was looking to use it as a daily driver and every now and then take it to the track, but I dont have time, nor want to track such a good car.

Is this a normal mindset of a GTR owner or am I just crazy????

Why not just get a 260RS Stagea?

Same drivetrain, much more practical.

GTR daily for the win.

Sure there are better cruising cars with softer suspension to get to work in, but then again do you really want to trade that for your GTR? Hopping in the car in the morning driving down the street with a smile on your face  sorry, but a corolla wont do that for me. I couldn't justify spending 2k a year on insurance and another 500 on rego just for a

Sunday drive, not to mention the service costs of a GTR

Once I walked out to the car and some kid (like 8 years old?) was walking along with his father telling him how much he wants a GTR and touched the badge as he walked past :D

i completely agree with this guy!!

ive owned many many cars now 6 to be precise! from Audi tt Class to wrx all wheel drives EVos. Holden and NOW the skyline.

I must say the r33 is probably the most responsive car ive ever owned yes she drinks the fuel but when i walk away from the car im smileing... and to me its a down grade from my Audi TT but for some unknown reason ..... I LOVE my skyline more....?... and i get more complements too?... haha

Daily all the way, and the satisfaction of when someone looks at the skyline as if to say one day ill get one.!

hi mate, i used to have a E36 M3 and currently my older brother has a E46 M3 CAB, the E36 is getting a bit old now and that the handling isn't anywhere as stiff/good as a GTR. the older a beemer is the more problems they have trust me the mechanical/electronic build of beemers aren't as good as you think they are. Plus performance is totally different the power in a E36 is instant (NA) but lacking as it's only about 216kw at the fly if i remember correctly and the GTR (FI) will have a little lag but has much more power (depending on set up). The E36 is much more luxury and is a easier car to drive as a daily. plus my E36 had SMG2 which was cool at first but i got weary of if after awhile and wanted a proper 6speed manual with a clutch.

all honesty i think you would be more happy with the GTR, or if you really want a luxury sports car get a E46 M3 they only go for about 70g's now. it all comes down to personal preference but you really should take a E36 M3 for a proper drive first before you decide.

Thanks for the input mate,

yeh i driven the e36 m, has more than plenty of power for street use, and i prefer the more luxury for daily use.

i Agree with you in terms of reliability have owned a few bmw's (330ci, 540i etc) and they have been nothing but problems, almost everyone i know who has beemers has lots of trouble. cooling system/ transmissions in particular.

I love the GTR ,only reason im considering selling the is i hate the image they have down hear, wouldn't mind something bit more off the police radar. also i have already owned 4 other skylines r32,r33,34,

its funny though i always end up going back to one after i get bored with the Euros

Might just save and hold out for a 911 or AMG

I intend to eventually get an R34 GTR.. but I would either need to keep the ute, orrrrrr put a tow bar on the 34 and trailer the bike. This may be considered either a) awesome or b) murder to the GTR. I wouldn't be worried about the fuel consumption as I would be loving every minute of it but would be a little paranoid about stressing the chassis. Although one road bike and trailer isn't that heavy so I would think it would have little impact on the car. What do you guys think? Obviously a properly contructes custom tow bar would be made.

I would luuuurv to be able to rock around with my two pride and joys in my grips. Mmmmm

MURDER!!!!!

But you are right - one road bike and trailer wouldn't be an issue. Biggest issue is probably resale, that and other GTR fans throwing buckets of blood on you as you alight.

personally i wouldn't be towing anything with a GTR!

my housemate has a tow package on his sti which he uses frequently

why do you need to trailer your road bike around? why not just ride it!

MURDER!!!!!

I knoooow... and I half agree, but then I think of cruising down to the Island in the GTR for a track day on the Blade and just how glorious life would be!! I would take the best care possible of the car and make sure the tow bar set up is quality.

whack a tow bar on it for sure... then you can get rid of the ute, which can only be a good thing!

if the chassis is okay putting 1000hp to the road towing a bike around will be a piece of piss

speaking of daily driving practicality... I took my boss and workmate to a funeral today in the R... couldn't go in my workmates car as its broken and my boss has a new TT, which is impossible to fit a regular size human in the back of... the GTR? no problems :bunny:

R is truly a 4 seater not a mock up wanna be like the new coupes.

GTR in Tassie for cruise with a club. boot full of clothes.

Back seat = 1 person

4 cases of beer

12 kg of chocolate

Front seat = 1 person and driver

Fully loaded and still handles like a dream.......

I wonder a GTR with a tow pack....what could you tow?

I had zero issues with my E39 540i or E36 M3 Evo (other than a stretched clutch cable) and both took some hard driving without complaints - in particular, took the 540 to a RAC skidpan session in 40deg heat (car is black with black leather), I gave up before the car did...)

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
