Well ive been building a drifter for the past few months, i bought it as a completely stock r32, didn't even have a fmic or a boost gauge. Since starting the build ive done the mods below.

Hks Split dump into 3" Kakimoto ( ill be running strait of dumps on track anyway )

Fmic

Welded diff

Pod filter

Tune up ( plugs, oil, timing belt, thermostat, water pump )

52mm Alloy rad ( stock clutch fan and electric thermo fan setup )

Boost and temp gauges

Hdi Boost controller

Safc

vg30 op6 Turbo

My next thoughts were to get a better exhaust and intake manifolds then go for a tune before hitting the track. When reading about the vg30 turbo i assumed that a safc would be enough to play around with to get the car running nicely with the new turbo, But have since been advised i need to spend another grand or two getting nistune installed and a tune with it before getting any benefits out of the new turbo, So im slightly annoyed and confused.

So far i have test ran the car with the new turbo @ 15 psi, Pressure holds @ 15 on stock rb20 actuator from around 3500 to 7000 and doesnt drop off at all, ive not been able to give it a really good test because i dont wannt be speeding around in an unregistered drifter.

But so far it does feel that the stock rb20 turbo @ 15 psi pushed me into my seat more than the vg30 one at 15psi, again ive not got it tuned yet.

Any thoughts / opinions are welcome!

Nistune cost's $420 for the ECU and budget about $300-$400 for a tune depending on how much is required.

e.g My old R31 skyline, but a cam and cam gear in a nistune at the same time. Took 3hours to tune from the factory tune.

also you would probly notice a power loos if you went to your track exhasut set up if you tuned the car with a street exhasut (due to the lack of back pressure). IMO just keep the exhaust on when u drift. Your current exhaust should be fine.

Also you mentiond you are going to use both clutch fan and thermo fans?? Can u elaberate how u plan to set this up. However for your info a clutch fan generly flows more air then a thermo fan set up thus better cooling.

You're spending too much cooling the engine and not enough hotting it up!! Read the turbo upgrade threads above to see what you need to do. e.g. manifolds do not need replacing - get your stock turbo highflowed. Nistune fitted and tuned should be less than $1000.

4. Some HSD coilovers

5. Caster rods

6. Rear camber arms

7. Hicas cancell bar

8. Decent alignment set up!

Then save up for a bunch of wheels any tyres, then more tyres and some more tyres....

NIStune boards for RB20s are only about $220 if you don't want a license for the software, $50ish for a competent electronics tech to fit it, few hundred bucks for a tune.

Don't bother with upgrading intake and exhaust manifolds, too much expense for little to no gain or as far as intake manifold goes, you will go backwards. The RB20 really needs those long runners. Stock exhaust manifold is good for up around 300rwkw too.

You'll go through about 3 pairs of tyres a day.

Get some BC coilovers, they're like $1200

TuneAgent Adjustable castor rods $260

and some adjustable camber arms.

Driftworks do a kit for like $2500 that includes coilovers and pretty much everything else you'll need to make the setup adjustable and delete hicas. I don't know about the quality of that kit as I havn't done a lot of research into it.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... HTH

    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily. 
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
