R33 Diff Abs V Non Abs

Recommended Posts

AFAIK the only difference between ABS and non-ABS skyline diffs is the ABS halfshaft flanges have the ABS teeth on them. If both diffs are VLSD units the halfshafts flanges should swap straight over.

so essentially there is no diffrence? only the half shafts are diff?..... so if i needed i could fit a ABS diff in my non abs car using my current non abs shafts?

Well I went the other way, I put a centre from my non-ABS 32 into my ABS wagon housing but had to use the 32s' half shafts as the wagons open centre half shafts were too small for the VLSD centre, I pressed off the ABS teeth and pressed them onto the non-ABS half shafts.

So if both centres are R200 VLSD units, either shafts should fit as there is no difference in length between the ABS and non-ABS shafts, the teeth are just a collar.

sweet so there is no difference... just the abs sensor collar for abs cars..... only asking coz there is a ABS diff available and i want to shim it up and put it in..... so for r33 the dimensions are the same abs-non abs no need for long tailshafts like the s-chassis

The housing and gears in my 32 are S13 items with an 32 back plate, not aware if there is a difference in input shaft length between ABS and non-ABS for S13s.

i always thought abs diffs were longer in the 'snout' so the tailshaft was different lengths between abs and non abs?? , so the pinion gear is longer in abs models??

If that model of car has the ABS sensor on the tailshaft side of things then probably yes, but if the model has the ABS sensors on the halfshafts, then no.

hey can anyone give me some help?

I was in the process or swapping over a non abs shimmed diff from a s1 r33 into my r33 s2 (has abs)... we then realised the snout of the non abs diff housing was shorter.

If i were to swap the tailshaft from the s1 would it all be sweet?

R33 Non-ABS Diff is shorter

R33 ABS Diff is longer, with a sensor plugged into the side, has a cable coming out of it

R33 half shafts are the same in both. I believe you guys are getting mixed up with S15 and R34 diffs, the sensor is on the shaft output.. has a ring with grooves on it.

    • Congratulations on your find  Did you mean it has 6k miles or was that a typo? Firstly, keep in mind some movement of the shifter is normal...it is a long rod hanging out of a box bolted to the engine. Having said that there are 2 next places to look: 1. Transmission and engine mounts. If these are worn or broken the shifter will move around more. They are reasonably easy to source and replace on a hoist, and possible but uncomfortable to replace car stands 2. On the bottom of the shifter there is a nylon cup that sits over shifter's ball end. If this is worn or broken the shifter will move around more than it should (but will still shift OK). That is a cheap part and requires removal of centre console, rubber shifter hole covers and a circlip in the gearbox shifter hole to remove the shifter. Re maintenance, as with any new import you should change all the fluids including transmission when you get it; never trust the seller and previous owners to have done the right thing. I am pretty sure R34 GTT is the same as earlier big box transmissions, so use any good quality GL4 75w90 trans fluid if it is shifting well (if it is hard to shift due to synchro wear, redline shockproof lightweight will keep it alive a bit longer before rebuild is required)
    • Well considering I have the exact same problem with that as the original one I don't think that the ignitor is the problem. I would imagine that this being such an uncommon problem the possibility of getting a new ignitor that is bad in the same way as the old one has to be very slim. I'll definitely pull everything apart this weekend and check the turbo out. Got quite a bit of things to check out Saturday like fuel pressure and the pcv so I'll report back once I do that.  Thanks everyone for all the replies this is all really helpful
    • Rb's have issues with bottom end starvation, not head starvation. Which either way, you probably wouldn't ever see on a dyno. Strange... What's pump gas for you? Octane rating?
