2 weeks ago i purchased my 350z anniversary wheels , although they were just a little to plain for me in the standard alloy colour . so today i thought id pull out the spray gun and give them a more stealthy aggressive look. the paint i used was the factory black r34 GV1 from memory .much to my suprise they came out better then i expected , totally give the car a different look.

for anybody at home looking to do something similar, the process was pretty simple .

1. rough up existing paint with 400 gritt

2. clean with thinners

3. spray a dust coat with the base paint.followed by 3 firm coats

4.2-3 coats of clear

5. maybe even a bit of a cut and polish depending how fussy you are

overall the end result was worth the time , took about 1 hr per wheel , off and back on again. ill throw a final pick up tomorrow , bit too dark by the time i got inside :P

Arthur T3 - it was a pretty sunny day yesteday when i sprayed them, being acrylic it dries pretty quick too. but what i did was after id spray the clear , i gave it 15 . then rolled it back to the car , carefully put it back on . put the bolts on carefully , pretty easy considering they are a pretty wide hole . then just left them over night to dry completely . saves a bit of time so i can get the next wheel, off to prep. i was keen to get them done before the sun went down :P cheers

hehe poor you by the sounds of it. definitly hate drying process, i try to be a perfectionist at times , but damn sometimes i just want it done and back on the car, i sprayed my rear bar on a sunny day ,then bang raining! heres me out in the garage still spraying lol. only crap thing is it goes milky in the cold , never the less all goes away when you cut it bck :P

i do a few colour coats and a couple of clear, but havent cut it, could be why my finish isnt as good,what do u use?

Think i have a bottle of mequiers fine cut would that do it?

i must say it requires a fair bit of work in regards to cutting to get that high gloss finish . usually rub back from 1500 - 2000, then use a cutting compound. iv used this septone stuff i purchased from the car paint place, followed by a polish compound ,then some other detailing polish. all depends what your doing , but thats my process for body work , seams to work for me. by the way in saying that , its a must you use a power dril or a variable speed grinder with buffing wheel / foam pad attatched to really get that gloss to shine , using some cheap buffing wheel from kmart wont be sufficient enough.

did this on the old r33 years ago.

same technique, wet sand, but i also used some putty to smooth out the gutter rash etc so took me a full day with all the waiting and drying.

these wheels do look nice though

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
