The Nissan VQ engine equipped Z cars uses a very sophisticated engine management system , even fitting items like free flowing exhaust and air filter will not give any return in extra brake horsepower and torque.

The ECU has the built in ability to self tune both the fueling and ignition and the car uses a fly by wire throttle system so this also control the bhp/torque in the lower gears by not allowing the throttle to be opened 100% in the 3 lower gears, 1st gear 65%, 2nd gear 70%, 3rd gear 80%.

If you say fit an exhaust and air filter kit, the car when running monitors

The air fuel ratio before the catalytic converters, if the ECU sees a difference to what the car was tuned to as standard it will tune itself back to the parameters within the ECU map. If the ECU keeps seeing a difference in the AFR reading it will then put on a Check Engine Light (CEL) this will stay illuminated until the problem has been cured and the CEL turned off with OBD II diagnostic tool.

The excellent UPREV system allows Abbey as a Pro UPREV tuner to reprogram the Stock ECU to allow for free flowing equipment to be fitted to the car, we can adjust the map when the car is in closed loop

to give the correct AFR figures for maximum safe BHP after freeing up the breathing on the car. We can also tune the ignition map to give a increase in performance, the ECU again uses a sophisticated system where as it slow feeds the ignition timing whilst listening to the cars detonation sensor until it using the figure that is in the low detonation map, this is why when tuning VQ motors the car needs 5/6 pulls on the dyno to get a reliable figure. Any noise read on the detonation sensor the car quickly reverts to a high detonate map which normal has 4 to 5 degrees of timing removed, it will then slow start returning ignition timing until it is back to the preset timing with the map.

We can also adjust cam angles with the UPREV system as well as changing injector sizing and have the ability to fit a larger capacity air flow meter for running above 400-wheel bhp. This helps when running the with Forced Induction, which the VQ response very well to. Running up to 400-axle bhp the stock internals are safe, to run over this BHP you need to rebuild the motor with up rated parts.

Hmmm...gonna drop them an email and see if they can do anything with the VQ25DET...being in the UK I'm sure they have the NM35's there so there may be hope!

guys - got a response from Mark @ Abbeymotorsports in the UK:

Jethro, As your car has a VQ I think we can help you , but 1st I need all the chassis numbers for the cars fitted with the VQ so I can work out how many different ECU,s are available. This will then allow me to work out if I need all the ECU's fitted to the cars to be sent to me to allow me to dump the ECU,s RAM.Are there Auto and manual cars made? Hopefully there will only be 2 ECU's one with cruise and 1 without cruise? If we can work this out I am sure I can sort mostly of your problem's out. But to be 100% sure I will definitely need an ECU sent over to me in the UK. let me know chassis Numbers and spec ASAP thanks

Mark Gillam

Director

It sounds like he knows nothing about Stagea's or the VQ25det...

I would prefer a Japanese ecu reflash as they have had many more years to refine theirs, unless this is a user programmable option? Uprev is a US company making tuning solutions for 350z, theirs are OBD2 compliant, ours aren't so completely different ecu's.

there is 15 different ECU numbers for your type of car which is a pain as we may need to dump everyone's ECU to allow the patch to be built to allow us to tune your cars. We need the ROM from every different part numbered ECU. How many people are interested can you get everyones FULL CHASSIS NUMBER please. The ECU's will need to be with us for 1 full day before we ship them back to you In Australia IF we can help you out.

Sigh...maybe your right Scott....looks like GZONE it is...>_<

Our cars are OBD2 compliant (Nissan's Consult 2 works fine with our cars)... just an odd protocol for some reason >_<

Yeah G Zone seems to be the tried and true method at the moment. Come on Ryan hook in and get it over there so we can check out the quality of their work! haha

Don't get me wrong, I have been advocating the Gzone as the remap to get for a long time now, but really, tried and true?

This.

Gzone would be good, but its still not ideal because it cant be tweaked locally on a dyno for your car. If the UPREV solution can play nice with our ECUs it would be a huge win. Fingers crossed. Great work ironpaw

The issue is Mark wants a whole bunch of chassis numbers to check and thinks there's "15 different' ECU's for our car.

I've given him my Chassis number and that doesn't seem to help. Can I confirm that "NM35305300" sounds right? I told him this and he goes "I need the whole chassis number..."

Hopefully I can convince him to just use a spare ECU that's floating around here and work off that. I don't see why he needs ALL our ECU's to find a solution...

The ECUs were revised from waht I've seen other people discuss on here; I dont know any specifics (I doubt anyone does) but I wouldnt be surprised if they tweaked them a few times. Having said that, I'm not sure about 15 but there could be a few... If hes got some info on M35s in general that may well include 2wd, and awd variants, auto, manual, as well as ARX and Axis of the Series 1 and Series 2 variants. No idea on chassis numbers off the top of my head unfortunately :(

What I was getting at was G Zone will actually do the re-map unlike evryone else we have approached and we know they can do it.

Aaah, you were referencing G-Zone as a company, not a product. I see.

G-Zone, Ks, Mines, Impul will all do remaps if you ship your ECU to them.

Mines and Impul will even sell you a remapped ECU if you don't want to ship one over (or just want an extra, just in case).

Using FAST with your VIN (which is what you supplied him), I grabbed and PM'd your "Model reference" if that is what he is after.

If he still wants your "chassis number" I suggest you explain to him that the although Stagea is a JDM only model, there are a few examples in the UK... although I always thought that UpRev were a US company.

If I read the old discussions properly though, Mines wouldn't remove the throttle restriction.

I figure we're not going to get a flash that does everything we want, but a flash that removes the speed limiter and throttle restriction and gives us 80-90% of what we want is fine with me. And when I want that remaining 10-20%, I can get an emanage knowing that the two main areas it can't fix are sorted from the flash.

They will not remove our restriction.

Ask Scott when you see him next how well it worked in that regard.

Mines completely remap the entire throttle map... does that mean they remove the restriction? Buggered if I know.

I asked them directly if they remove the restriction below 3000rpm and they replied "we do not", but they did state that they do remap the entire throttle map up to their normal 7100rpm (they will go higher, but issue a warning of "please consider engine safety").

I think your plan of the Gzone + emanage is almost as good as it gets.

Hopefully we can get from G Zone exactly what they are willing to do so there's no confusion. I just want the performance I'm missing better fuel economy when I'm toodling around taking it easy. I don't think that's too much to ask as we know we aren't getting full throttle and we also know that the japs love to tune cars super rich from the factory.

Yeah I read that thread and whilst it doesn't remove the restriction since its ECU limited, it does make it more responsive doesn't it?

Scott tried it? Guess it didn't go well...

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
